My DS is turning 7 in feb, this is the year for him to do an out the house birthday party and I am not sure what to do! I could do bowling or skating, but I am trying to think of something abit different. I would like to do something that I don't have to work to hard to entertain the kids (I don't want to rent a hall or anything) There are a couple of indoor water parks in the area, but I do not want to pay $300 for their parties.

So any budget friendly ideas???

TIA

There is a pottery place here in st.louis http://www.paintingpaw.com/ Ice Skating is always cool. There is also Build a Bear and I have heard BAB has a Build a Car(not sure about name) next door. Science center or zoo with goo and bug or maybe you hire the animal guy/gal to come to your house with snake, mice and lizards. Seach for the local indoor nascar park or go cart track.

ALso you can always try to negoiate on the pricing.

For my boys, we've done movies, swimming, indoor soccer, mini golf (indoor and outdoor), inflatables, CEC, plus another place like it, and bowling, of course. We did Medevil Times for one, but that was pretty expensive. :scared1:

DS's 7th b-day was in August and we had his party outside at a local park. (Might be too cold this time of year; not sure when your son's b-day is). He loves legos, so we did a lego theme.

The decorations and tableware was easy; primary colored everything that we got from Dollar Tree.

For "favors" I bought a big box of basic legos from the Lego Store and split it up in clear plastic bags. I added silly straws, balloons, candy and a fee other things. To make the plain bags look "fancy" a curled bunches of red, blue, yellow, and green ribbon and tied those to the bags. It took a lot of time to curl all the ribbon, and staple it together, but they looked great. I spent $4.00 buying the four rolls of ribbon, and made about 20 bunches. My ribbons looked just as good as the ones you get premade for $1.00 each.

I made the invitations myself. I bought a 20 pack of primary colored cards and envelopes from Michaels. ($5.00). I used a 1" hole punch to cut out "dots" and glued them to the from of the card to make it look like a lego.
I printed all the party info inside.

Since it was at the park, the kids spent a lot of time just playing, but we did have a few games. We had a race to see who could build a lego tower the fastest. We filled a clear container with legos and had everyone guess how many were inside (fun for kids and adults). We had a relay/ egg-spoon race but used legos on the spoons instead of eggs.

My grandma made his cake to look like 4 legos stacked on top of each other. You could do something much simpler, just google lego cake ideas.

I think that's about it.
Let me know if you have any questions.
It was blast!

When DD was that age, we had a Gymnastics party at a local facility. It was very budget friendly. It was $100 for the facility which included tables/chairs and a "coach" to facilitate the fun. They did the huge trampolines, foam pit, mini tramps, etc.. I just brought in cake and goody bags. It was a big hit for everyone (girls, boys, moms & dads). DD & her friends still talk about it now (3 years later).

We have done a party at the park/playground, Chuck E Cheese, and 2 gymnastic gym parties. I think a great winter party would be going bowling, rollerskating, or laser tag.

Personally, we have stopped doing traditional birthday parties. We go somewhere to celebrate their day with our immediate family plus one friend of their choice. When my oldest DS turned 7 this past summer, we took his BF and spent the day at Water Country USA. When my younger DS turns 6 this winter, we will be going to Great Wolfe Lodge and meeting up with some out of state family there. My DD hasn't had a party yet because she isn't in school so she doesn't have "friends" yet. For her 3rd birthday, we took her and older DS's to an indoor inflatable/bouncy gameroom. When she gets in school, we may do a party once so she can have that experience. I honestly like this way better. The cost is alittle higher than what we were spending on a party that lasted 2 hours; but this way, the celebration lasts all day.

I see you are NJ we just had my sons 8th birthday at Monkey Business, they loved it. We also went to a party at Bounce U, It just a place with huge blow up things they run and jump and get all the energy out. It was great for all the kids ages 3 on up, my son was trying 8. Look them up on the internet. No fuss, no mess. it was perfect.

OP, where in NJ are you? I'm in Essex county, and know pretty much every place to have a party within 1/2 of my home.

Have a party at home. Print some simple coloring sheets for them to color, have a craft station, and let them play. My oldest ds is 13 and we've only had one party that wasn't at home.

Are you near a lego store? They do parties now that I think the kids would love. I wish I had known the details of it before having my DS's party at home. We had a great time though and I have no regrets with doing it at home.

We have a place in upstate NY that does indoor rock climbing B-Day parties which I thought sounded really cool but my DD wasn't interested. We had an ice skating party with both girls and boys for my DD's 8th B-Day and the kids all seemed to really enjoy it. One of my DD's best friends is a boy, I'm so glad because that means that we get to skip all the super girly types of parties.

We did a movie party for my DS 7th b-day last August (saw G-force). They did the cake, pizza, everything - I did nothing but pay for it - LOL. We had a host assigned to us and she kept everything in order. Now - it wasn't all the budget friendly. But, with DH deployed I didn't want to have anything in my house or that I was the only adult responsible for everything. Just made my life so much easier!

Last February when my DS turned 10 he said he wanted an Ultimate Nerf Gun Battle birthday party. We had the Nerf Gun battle at the park for 2 hours and then took the boys to Red Robin for dinner ($5 kid meals) and then back home for cake & ice cream. Four of his friends spent the night. The party was super cheap and the boys said it was one of the best parties ever!

None of his other friends had ever had a Nerf Gun party before, but after DS's party there were a few more held. The boys had so much fun that the idea took off where some of DS's guests had Nerf Gun parties for their birthdays.

Most of his friends have Nerf guns of various sizes, but we brought extras along just in case (DS has 20+ Nerf Guns).

Our end of February weather here is usually in the 50s as far as temperature goes. I don't know if your area would be warm enough. The boys ran around so much that they didn't even wear the jackets they brought.

For my DS we went to a laser tag place and had a party, it also included tokens to the small arcade on sight. They had a small party room where we had pizza and cake. The kids and a lot of parents went in for 2 sessions, everyone had a blast! Very easy all I provided was the cake. It wasn't that expensive either.

Also at this age kids love bowling.

Good luck and have fun!

I know you said out of the house, but if you change your mind and do it at home, my daughter had a Mad Science bday party for her 7th. We had it in the house, the mad scientist guy comes, does all kinds of fun experiments for the kids... they loved it. Not sure if it is in your area, you could check the website. Just thought it was something different.

LOL - ds11 loves nerf too, but it's usually below freezing here in NJ in February, with a good chance of there being snow on the ground.

Thank you for all your ideas, i shall check into them. All the at home party ideas will be good for next year!

I try to do an out the house party every other year, so that way it is special and they don't expect it every year.

My DD9 has her birthday in September and has actually only had two birthdays out of the house. She loves having pool parties! Also i have noticed the parties seem to slow down or even stop once they get to 8, at least they do in my kids school!
