I live in a small town, hospital births and photos are published monthly - here is a sample of the baby names today - what kind of *out there* names, or crazily-spelled names, have you seen recently?

BTW, I tear this page from the paper - it's entertaining for my teenagers, reading the names!

Megyn Abagale
Mikah Cheyenne (a girl)
Segio Patricio (boy)
Lorelai Nichole
Makana Lynn
Draydon Lane
Adynisham Creed
Yovani Zayed
Alley Samantha
Kryslyn Chaye (girl)
Eliana Rachidi
Jaylen Luther (boy)

And variations of Aaliyah -
Aliyah
Aliya
Aleiah

Whew - these babies (and their parents) have many days of spelling and pronouncing names ahead of them!:)

Had DD at the doctor the other day and there was a young boy in the waiting room with his mother. The kid's name was Annikin (sp?) as in Star Wars. OMG

The most unusual one I've seen lately is "Banx" (I'm guessing it's pronounced like "banks"??)

My son's name is Liam and the nurse was asking me how to pronounce it. When I told her "like Liam Neeson" she went on to explain that they had another patient whose name was spelled L-i-a-m, but was pronouned "yum". She said the mom of the child told her he was named after his dad whose name was William (pronounced Wil-yum). :sad2:

I met a little girl named "Addisyn" the other day. It just looks wrong to me.

OMG...I nearly spit out my drink when I read this. Do you think she was
really dumb and thought L-i-a-m was really pronounced that way or she just wanted to be "different"

I must speak up for those with differently spelled names. My mother was born in Ireland and my name is spelled in an Irish way. It's not the most common spelling, but to us it is the correct spelling! It is quite common in the Irish American community, but other people look at me like I'm crazy when I spell it for them. You'd probably be ripping my name out of the paper and laughing at it with your kids.

In the OP, I didn't understand the last part - is Aaliyah somehow a correct spelling and Aliyah wrong? It seems silly to have an extra "a" in there. It is a pretty name, but I would have spelled it Aleah if it was a name I had picked.

That is hilarious!

I have no words. Unbelievable!

I'm not sure what the "correct" spelling is - there are just a zillion ways it's spelled!

Another popular, different name now is Nevaeh - Heaven backwards.:confused

I'm the first one to be amazed by different names, but Lorelai Nichole? What's different about that? It's not an overly common name, but was popularized by Gilmore Girls and is hardly comparable to the other names on your list.

The different spellings get me more than the names themselves, sometimes.

Yep, we LOVE the Gilmore Girls, Lorelai is one of the names my teen girls have on their lists of favorites. Nicole sometimes has the H too.
The others are pretty weird though. I have an unusual spelling and would never do that to a kid! My kids have traditional spellings and people still get their names wrong all the time anyway:confused3

I interviewed a nurse the other day. Her name was Scholastica

It's a saints name -maybe her parents are devout

I love seeing unusual names. (my own children have very common ones however) Some of the "made up" ones do seem silly -but I guess all names were "made up" at some point or another.

I know someone that just had a baby yesterday, named him Rocco.

These poor kids actually have to grow up with these names...:confused3

DH and I are both of Irish decent (MIL was from Ireland) and gave our girls Irish names, with Irish spellings. Our oldest is Caolyn (NOT Carolyn) and is pronounced (Kay-lynn), our youngest is Cairrean (NOT Karen or Carrie Ann)and is pronounced C-I-ren. This said my name is Keri and you wouldn't believe how many times I have been told that my name is spelled wrong, and how many times it has been misspelt by others assuming that it's Carrie.

As a Pre-K teacher I have some interesting names (including spellings) in my class. But I try not to judge most based on trying to put a spin on a common name. Plus we have children who's names were actually misspelt by their parents (or birth certificates)! Keep in mind these kids are 4 yo and their names are still incorrect. If I even attempted to write some of the names I would get them wrong :rotfl:

These people do not realize what they are doing to their kids! Kids get really embarrassed and mad when people continually mispronounce & misspell their names. Some end up going by their middle names if they are not too far out there.

A friend of my DD's name is Ceili. So, how did you read that? Did you read it like "See-leee"? Everyone does, but the poor kid's name is pronounced like Kailey! "Cei" does not say "Kay" though! Grammatically, it says "see". It's no wonder she gets so upset because no one ever says her name correctly the first time -- no one.
