Pre-Trip #24:
Making Our Lists, Checking Them Twice
Have you ever noticed how much we trip-planners seem to enjoy making
lists? List making is such a common thread in all of our reports. There are so many things we like to itemize and catalog. Hey, I’ve got an idea!

Why don’t we
list them?!
First, there are the
historical lists. We talk about these in the introductory paragraphs of our reports as part of the backstory. We may even include them in our signatures:
*Our previous trips to WDW, including the dates and special events celebrated.
*The WDW resorts at which we’ve stayed.
*The cast of characters (and how it has changed through the years.)
We then segue into the
preliminary planning lists:
*What ADRs we’ve made.
*What parks we plan to visit on which days.
*What shows and attractions we must see.
A subset of planning lists are the
"Pro & Con" lists. You’ve seen these, I’m sure!
*Go in October or December? Pros & Cons
*On Property or Off? Pros & Cons
*Dining Plan or No? Pros & Cons
As our trips get closer, we move on to the more specialized lists; the
"To Do" Lists:
*What we need to buy.
*What we need to make.
*What we need to pack.
*What we need to clean.
*What we need to accomplish before we leave.
Lists, lists, and more lists. Somehow we feel more organized, more centered when we make lists. We’re more confident that important details will not be forgotten. I would chalk it up to
human nature, but it seems as though even Disney characters make lists. I submit this exhibit from
Minnie's house as evidence:
The most satisfying thing about these lists, of course, is
the crossing off of each item as it gets done.

Never is a simple pencil line made with such flourish as when it is made right through an item on a “to do” list! That’s one more thing done! One step closer to the goal. One less thing to worry about.
On the flip side, though, is the anxiety that comes when the items on the “to do” list are not getting crossed off in a timely manner.

So many demands pulling us in different directions, and not enough time to accomplish everything we want to! Lists can torment us with their lingering presence. Unfinished tasks become so many itemized mini-burdens; like so many worry beads on a string.
Interestingly, the word
list was also once commonly used as “listen” or “to listen to”. Perhaps we like to talk about our "To Do" lists because it helps us to commit more fully to them when we know that someone is
listening. We seek the support and advice of our fellow planners as we share the ups and downs of our preparations and move ourselves closer and closer to our shared objective: the fun-filled WDW vacation of our dreams!

It’s a joy to share it all with those who understand “the agony and the ecstasy.”
That’s one of the things I like most about the DISers on the trip reporting/planning boards….when we find ourselves
listing to the side and in danger of capsizing, we can always find a willing ear to bend, a broad shoulder to cry on, and a helping hand to grasp.
We’ve got a great army of WDW fans here who love to
listen to each other go on and on about plans, long after friends and family have grown weary of them. I’m so glad that I
enlisted!
