just wondering.... would it be worth risking buying park tickets, then upgrading to an AP when we get there THEN getting a hotel?

thing is, we're going in July... first week of the summer holidays...

Possibly risky for the hotel side, purely because it will no doubt be very busy and there might not be any rooms left.

You can buy an AP upto 30 days before you go.

Are you thinking about trying the sponsorship thing that jillrobinson was mentioning in another thread? And subsequently then get an AP discount on the hotel?

I would expect the hotels to be full, maybe best getting one before hand.

I'm not even sure that room only rate would be cheaper, given that this is high season. It is an interesting thought. If you are not desperate about staying on-site it might be worth a risk, but not one for the faint hearted :)
