Annual Passes or Two 5-day Passes?

If I am taking a 5-night trip this summer and another 5-night trip next April, should I buy two 5 day, one-park tickets for adult and child, or should I buy two annual passes?

2x 5-day tickets for adult and child = $1299.32
2x annual passes = 1393.02

Would the $100 or so difference be worth getting the food, hotel, and event discounts, plus park hopper benefits?

Annual passes also give us the option of returning for a third trip (i.e., the opportunity to spend EVEN MORE MONEY with Disney), but I do not know whether we would choose to do that.

I would go with the AP and use the discounts.

We did that last year and are returning just within the 12 month period for next year's trip.

It also gives you the option of popping into the park on arrival day or for a bit on departure day.

We also have a Bounce Back offer booked in September, with two-day tickets so we could get free dining. Can we use those tickets a couple of years in the future when we don't have annual passes? Or can we transfer them to someone else, provided we have not used them at all? My guess is that vacation package tickets are non-transferable, but I thought I would ask.

My fear exactly. :scared:

I am so frugal with practically everything in my life. Except Disney vacations. And living just 7 hours away and having 13 vacation weeks a year, I can see my savings account, in true Disney fashion, magically disappearing.

we only get 4 vacation weeks a year....and we spend a whole lot of that at Disney!!! Literally before AP we were doing a trip or 2 per year after AP it moved to 4 - 5 trips a year....it's all downhill!

Homeschooling helps a lot - we can go anytime there are low crowds or the urge strikes us. Our car knows the 10 hour drive so well it could probably drive itself!

I think you could transfer the tickets - I KNOW we have done the Free Dining (with APs) in the past and just saved the tickets to use in the future (this AP's original tickets were 2 day Free dining tickets - which were then upgraded to 10 day tickets - so when the time came we could book 10 days worth of FP at 60 days out- and then they were finally upgraded to APs)

I am a teacher and keep threatening my husband that I am going to quit my job and home school the kids so we can go during low crowd seasons. Of course, since it is my income that pays for vacations, that puts us in a bit of a quandary.

And speaking of cars driving themselves . . . I am counting the days until automatic cars are generally available to the public. I want to hop in the car at 11 pm, program it, and wake up at Disney World! :car:

This is how I became a Florida resident annual pass holder many years ago. No regrets.

You said you had a trip "this summer" in the original post. Is the September trip "this summer?" If so, you could use those tickets towards an upgrade to the annual pass once you arrive.

In cold hard dollars, it's sometimes difficult to place value on the Park Hopper option. Our family learned long ago that PH is a must. Plans change, there could be rain, maybe somebody wants to hop to MK just for Wishes. We use our PH's to plan better park days, to just enter a park to enjoy a meal. It's questionable if DHS is even a full day park anymore, and it's so easy to visit Epcot on the same day. So many advantages to PH.

If your price is for 5 day base tickets with No Hopper then the AP price is already a gain.

As a fellow Atlantan and AP holder I would say yes. You really have nothing to lose :D since the price is so close. If you don't use it other than the two trips then all is good. If you decide to go back again you need no tickets. For the ones in the family who don't have APs the ticket is the big issue when it comes to extra trips.

If you have two trips PLUS a Bounceback then this is a resounding YES! You don't use the Bounceback tickets. You can (1) Save them to put towards your AP renewal, which we have done many times. (2) Re-assign the ticket to someone else, which we have done many times for DH to come on some trips.

A big plus for us .... we leave in am from ATL and check in, get settled and then head to MK for just 4-5 hours to kick off the magic. Checkout day we get packed in the car, drive to DHS go on a few attractions, have a good lunch then leave around 1-2 pm. Drive straight home. Yes it's 9 pm, but we unload and go to bed. We've added two more park days to our trip but not worried that we spend extra on tickets.

I do go 5-6 weeks a year but my numbers have my PAP more than paid for each year, maybe even most of DS as well. Other DS bought his own AP. Here are examples of my savings:

- Free Parking $17 a day, one year that was worth about $300 to us.

- If you think, I'll be onsite ..... once you have an AP you start following deals on hotels. Like DS just went down Thursday with a friend to hang with DD (a CM). Found a great deal at B hotel DTD, buy two nights get one free and they got the expensive Sat night free. Total $350 to be at new B for 3 nights, walking distance to B (they were going to some bars). And he was splitting the hotel with friend. And they got a room with a private patio and two sofas that open up to the pool. I'm going in May for last minute to do SWW and 24 Hour Party - one week in 2 bedroom condo at Sheraton Vistana - $67 a night. Kitchen means I can bring food stuff. Have been to Bonnet Creek in condos for $45 night one bedroom, $88 night two bedroom. When you have AP and can drive in 7 hours your obsession will be finding cheap places to stay. Ticket covered, and money saved can buy nice eats!

- Onsite AP discounts on room can be nice. I don't know how or why, I don't question, but very often I will book an AP room and the discount advertised is say 25% but rate came out 28%, but even at the advertised discount you can get a good rate.

- With AP we can do lots of runs for Halloween Party or 24 Hour Party or SWW or even the grand opening for a ride, yup we headed down to be one of first to ride 7DMT.

- We add to our value with the Tables in Wonderland and in a year more than get our monies worth. Have an AP, not paying for tickets each time, put many of the Disney restaurants back in the budget, take 20% off food and alcohol, big plus.

- DISCOUNT BOOKLET examples: 10% at some restaurants if you don't buy TIW - 10-15% off some purchases and experiences including recreation, tours, spas, salons, bowling, ranch, marinas, water sports - discounted tickets to theaters, fishing, DisneyQuest, Waterparks, Golf, Putt Putt - golf as high as 30% off AP holder and guests - discounted tickets to Parties - special deals like right now $50 off some summer Africa Wild Trek tours - discount at kennel and child centers, and Alamo - invites to AP holder only special events - just bought 24 Hour Party TeeShirts in advance, offered to AP holders only. It all adds up over time.

To me it's a no brainer. For a $100.00 difference you get the value of park hopping and all the discounts. Those things are easily worth the hundred bucks. Go for it!!!

That's exactly what I was gonna say! The hopper is great, then you can even go in park on your departure day if you flight is later. And, if you don't care about making early fp's, as the pp said, you could use those two day package tickets and upgrade those, so actually less cash out, than if you paid for those thru the package and then also an AP. Of course you can always save those tickets towards a future trip. Either way, AP definitely the way to go! Plus you live relatively close so you can get more Disney fun if you want, but no choice to do that if you do the two five day passes!

No. I consider September to be our "fall" trip. I always forget that September is still technically summer. We do MNSSHP and get what Disney usually calls it's "fall discounts." I actually have to report back to school on July 27th this year, so anything after that is fall in my mind.

I just booked 5 nights in mid July, which I am calling my "summer trip." I wasn't going to do it. I tried to resist. But last night at midnight I saw that I could get AKL standard for $205 and I took the plunge.

Wow, thanks! You provided some great info. And your daughter is a CM? How fun! I had an offer to work in their summer program when I was in college but I turned it down to go to Europe for the summer. I have always wondered "What if...?" Now I am encouraging my daughter to work at Disney. She is only 8 now, but I thought it was best to work on her early. ::yes:: Nothing like living vicariously through your children.

I would love to be able to reassign our Bounce Back two-day tickets to my toddler and my husband next April. The little one does not need a ticket for the July trip because she will not yet be 3. If I could reassign my older daughter's bounce back tickets to her for our next trip in April and reassign mine to my husband (he is not going in July and could care less about the parks), they could have two days with us in the parks next April then spend the rest of their time at the resorts while my older daughter and I head to the parks.

I think I would use quite a few of those discounts, including event tickets, dining, and the tours. We also plan to use Club Disney in September for a few hours for the kids while enjoy Ohana.

For that small a difference, I would definitely do the AP. We will not go without Hoppers, going into the parks for a few hours, etc. We just went to Disney for 14 nights, got our AP's and plan to return for at least one more trip.
