Annual pass upgrade questions

We have a trip planned for March 2019. I have 2x 5 day hoppers that I bought from Undercover Tourist last year, right before they sold out of non-expiring tickets. We are considering upgrading the tickets to APs and then going again in October 2019. I have a few questions regarding the tickets.

I can only upgrade these tickets to APs once I have used them to enter the parks at least once, correct? So I can't call Disney and get them upgraded before our first trip, right? Also, we are DVC members, so when we upgrade, would we be eligible for the DVC AP price even when applying our current tickets to the cost to upgrade?

Also, I thought I remembered somewhere the I could look to figure out the cost of upgrading older tickets to annual passes, given price changes, etc. I know that prices will likely change again before we go in March 2019, but this will at least give me some idea of cost so we can make our decision and book our DVC room this coming November. If someone could provide a link, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You’ll be able to apply the ticket to a DVC AP. From my understanding you don’t have to enter the park first to upgrade but you have to upgrade in person the value of your ticket will be the value of a 5 day park hopper at the time UT purchased it from WDW.

You cannot upgrade third-party tickets over the phone, but you don’t have to use them first, either. You can purchase the DVC discounted AP at any ticket window.

You’ll get credit for the value of the ticket before expiration dates were added. Additional price changes will have no impact on the value of your tickets.

Do they have an expiration date? Are are these what is sometimes referred to as "old stock" -- the tickets available before the ticket change even if purchased after the price increase? If they are stock from prior to Feb. 12, 2017, they will have a value from Feb. 11, 2017. If they have an expiration date (probably 12/31/2018), they have the value from Feb. 12, 2017. Here is the "ticket sticky" from the TPAS board: https://www.disboards.com/threads/all-about-tickets-upgrades.3570721/ Robo keeps that up-to-date and is helpful answering questions.

You will need to upgrade in-person; either before or after first using the ticket but before the last entitlement is finished. I believe you should be able to apply it to a DVC AP. I recommend you do your math and know the amount to expect as upgrade.

Enjoy your vacation!

Ok, so I did some more digging and after looking at a few sites, what I am coming up with is this. The gate price pre 2/27/17 is the price that should apply towards our upgrade. That price, plus tax, was $435.59. I found this information on Allears.

Gate price when ticket was purchased was $409 +tax = $435.59
Current DVC Gold Pass is $589 +tax = $627.29

So at the current price, it would cost roughly $191.70 to upgrade each ticket (barring price increases, which I expect). If this seems really wrong, please let me knwo. DH just wants a general idea of the cost for us to upgrade before we decide on the trip. Thanks all for your help.

That looks right. My guess is there will be another increase on APs in February 2019 if not before that.
