Annual Pass Upgrade During Trip

Trying to discern the policies on Annual Passes and upgrades. If all of us in a room on a package have to have 'the same thing,' does that mean if I want to upgrade my ticket to an AP during the trip, they have to also? Am I locked out of doing so because we're on a package? I have another friend who will be in FL next year so doing the math on the tickets it really looks like it will be worth it to me to get that AP this time around and put the current tickets towards the cost, and pick up a TIW card while I'm at it.

Once you start to use the tickets they become independent and you can upgrade yours without upgrading everyone's. It's just before arriving that they have to be the same.
