Annual pass/resort discount question

I’ve searched and can’t find the answer to my question. I have read on here that it saves money to buy a 10 day pass from undercover tourist and upgrade when we get there. Can we still get an AP room discount if one is available? If so, how would I go about doing that?

You can't get the AP discount if you don't have an AP yet, you can get one if they see it's been purchased but not activated, but they won't give it to you with your promise that you will be getting an AP once you arrive.

You can’t even see AP room discounts online unless you have either an actual AP or the voucher thingie you buy online to turn into one on arrival.

Unless it's changed recently, you can book without having an AP. You can't view AP discounts online, but you can call and see what's available for your dates. If what you want is available, you can book it. When you check in, you could be asked to show your valid pass. Tell the CM you are upgrading to an AP and you should have some time (I think it's 24 hrs) to go back and show your valid AP. Hopefully others will correct me if something has changed and this is no longer the policy.

He had previously had an AP but decided against renewing when prices went up this summer, and then decided he would upgrade his tickets on this trip because he missed having it. He called up in October and the CM he spoke to told him he must have a valid AP or AP voucher in order to book the rate. He called back several more times and was never able to get it, so other peoples mileage may vary with this, but I know recently it appears they aren't allowing it. I see it as another little loophole Disney is trying to close if they have changed it, I could definitely see that being an issue.

He did, multiple times because he had done it before, oh well. I guess it doesn’t hurt to try.

You can call in and book an AP rate without having one (or a voucher) in hand. As PP said, you will just need to show it to the front desk at check-in or shortly thereafter. I've called in for AP rates many times and CM's have never asked for proof of current AP (or voucher) when I've called.

I have only had one trip where I needed to renew my AP on the trip. I did have an AP room booked and I was given 24 hours to bring the AP to the front desk or my rate would revert to rack rate. That was more than enough incentive to get me back to the desk with the newly minted pass!

Great! I remember doing something similar a long time ago (before you actually had to have your tickets 60 days before you went) but so much has changed that I wasn’t sure if that had changed too.

FWIW, I bought an AP, but I haven't been to the park yet for my trip, I am able to see the room discounts.

I think it depends where you bought it. People that bought directly from disney could see them. I bought mine through my union. It's linked and shows on mde but it doesn't show my AP rates. It reverts to the screen to purchase them.
