my annual pass is up for renewal on November 22nd. I will be at WDW on December 8th. Can I renew then and still get the renewal discount? I thought I had heard somewhere that as long as you renew within 30 days your pass will be back dated but you will still get the discount. Any help would be appreciated.

AP's can be renewed (at the renewal rate) up to 60 days BEFORE and up to 30 days AFTER the original AP anniversary date.

I have a question on the date. I thought that the date of your pass was the date when you activate it, not when you renew it. So my renewal is up on November 30th (which is when I went last year and activated my voucher). If I purchase my renewal, but do not activate until I go in March, will March 2017 be my new renewal date? I hope that makes some sense.

Renewal date is always the date of the original. Your renewal will be November 30.

Renewed AP's will be the same date no matter when you pay. Look at the dates, it may make more sense to lose the 15% depending on dates you are going. Though not everyone has over a year of trips planned, I once waited to skip 4 months and then got 2 trips on the next AP. If I would have renewed, I would have had to do 2 renewals in that time instead of 1 new purchase. So in the time frame of trips I knew I was taking, I paid less by not actually renewing.

The reason renewals are cheaper is because they're contiguous. A renewal simply extends the current expiration another year.

If you'll have a four month gap between when your AP expires and when you need to use it again, you might consider just getting a new AP when you need it. It will be more expensive, but it might make more sense than paying for four months that you won't be using it.

Thanks Supersnoop, I want to double check because I seem to remember when I first bought the AP, the date wasn't until I activated it. In fact I think that is the case because my expiration date is Nov 30th which is when I activated it not when I bought it.

- You are talking about two completely different "tickets" - AP purchase vs AP renewal.
- You originally purchased a "voucher" for an AP that would be converted to an AP when you first used (activated) it.
- The date of your full year pass begins on the date the voucher converted to a ticket.
- Now you are talking about renewing your AP ticket, not really purchasing a renewal ticket.
- There is no voucher, no new purchase and no need to convert as you already have an existing ticket.
- You are merely paying to extend the expiration date another year, which is the date you activated the original ticket.
- You may renew in the time stated above before or after your expiration date.
- If you do not renew by the 30 days after, your AP will be dead.
- After that point you purchase a new AP via a voucher like before, but at the full price, which is not discounted.
- I have let my pass expire when I realized the money lost on non-use is more than the discount offered with a renewal.

What she said. Exactly. I just renewed just before my 30 days was up. Original anniversary date. It made sense for me and my trip schedule, but usually we don't renew because of the timing of our trips.

Thanks everyone. I also found this on the DVC website:

NOTE: Annual passes are valid for 365 days from the date of redemption. Renewals will be valid for 365 days from the original Pass Anniversary Date. Renewals can be purchased 60 days prior to the expiration date. Limit 8 purchases per household, per 12-month period.

That explains it. If we renew now, we get 2 trips out of it. If I wait to renew, we get 3 trips out of our tickets. I have to do the math to see if it is worth waiting and losing the renewal discount. I also have to plan to see if I renew again, if that will include my future trips. Sorry, just thinking out loud :). Really if you go more than once, you save a bunch!
