Any benefit renewing existing annual pass or is it the same cost if I do it again in many months time?

That really kind of depends on when you are going. If you renew, you will have the same anniversary/expiration date, but if you wait and pay the full discounted price again the next time you are traveling, it could save you money over the long run, since your expiration date will change. When we first started buying APs 10 years ago, you were able to renew and not activate your renewal right away. That meant your expiration date didn't happen unitl 366 days after first use of your renewed pass (just like buying the vouchers now). Shortly after that, Disney changed the system so that when you renewed, your expiration date stayed the same as your first pass. That didn't make much sense for us coming from so far away, so we instead started an every-other-year pattern. We buy AP vouchers and activate them on a trip. Then we proceed to make 2-3 trips in the ensuing 366 days. At the end of that time, we let our passes expire, and instead of renewing them, we get new ones about 12 months later. Then the cycle starts over again. That seems to be the best plan for us.

If you won't be using the pass for several months, it is best to wait and get a new pass then. A renewal is backdated to the expiration anniversary of the original pass. Sice the price increase I don't know what the renewal vs. new price is, it was about $25 savings on a renewal for DVC, but again, if you'll lose several months, it isnt worth the renewal.
