Announcing "The Incredibles"!

Welcome new members! I'm enjoying reading about each of you and getting to know everyone!
What exercise do you hate/despise the most?

Running hill repeats. Agh! They are so tough!

As for non-running exercises, it would have to be push ups. I can't do 'em. I struggle so badly when trying to do any upper body exercises!

Dona-welcome! No matter you run/don't run, we will help keep you accountable for whatever exercise you do if that is what you need.

55 is not old (neither is 49 there Miss Susie;)), my FIL is going to be 68 this September and is going for the Coast to Coast Challenge with me. He is a nut, but to him (and my dear MIL) fat is the worst thing that can happen to you. So they exercise like crazy. DIL teaches spinning 2x week, plays tennis 4-5 x week and runs at least 3-4 x week. MIL will run 6 mile hill routes to work off a corn muffin. They are trying to kill me I think, but its good to have them to train with, they do keep me going.

Veronica - I wish I was 49. ;) That's when I got started in all of this. As for your ILs, that's great....gives me some hope. It's good that they exercise with you. Really, as long as you are healthy, you can do this training at any age. Your MIL should go for the DL half! I'll never forget that first half in 2007. My DH, Steve, told me that some 70+ yr old lady beat my time. I said good for her! Since then, there have been many 60 and 70 yr olds that have passed me and I cheer them on every time!

Thanks for volunteering to be the team captain!!!

Exercise that I hate the most - lunges. Ugh! I'm so uncoordinated. I practically fall over doing these. I don't know what the mountain climbers are. Must be on a machine that we don't have at our gym.

Patsy - congrats on the 10K. GREAT TIME! Have fun at DL! I've got my fingers crossed for no rain for ya! Oh, and another thing - I can see Goofy in your future!!! It's all about the bling. That's why I did it this year. Oh, and one more thing - you ought to consider doing the Nike Women's Half or Full (San Francisco). You get a Tiffany necklace as your medal. It's a bling you can wear all the time. It really is a fun race as well.

Dona- I'll be 53 in June. We're right up there together. :) Also, the beauty of most of these endurance races is that you don't have to runner in order to participate. Most are geared for walkers, too! There are quite a few of us WISH walkers. We always claim the party is at the back of the pack with us. :cool1:

Lauren - Shin splints by chance? That's very common for new runners (and walkers) and those trying to go faster. There are great exercises for this...if this is your problem. Way to go for getting out there!

Amy- I need to look up that Jillian Michael's 30 day shred. Is that for losing weight? I need a kick start! Good luck with your training for the Princess. I'd like to do that someday. The medal looks cool! By the way, one of my best friends lives in the upper west side of Manhattan - a couple of blocks from Bloomingdales. I just love visiting her - everything is right there at your fingertips.

Kelley - good for you for registering to run the half next January. It was my first half and it really is a lot of fun.* (*Don't read my report for that race). Really, the whole weekend is a great experience. That's what turned me on to do more races. Your DH should just sign up and do the race with you...unless you need someone to watch the kids. In that case, just bring your parents along. ;)

Melinda - lots of us walkers here on the WISH boards. I'm not a fast walker, yet. My DH does pretty well. He does a 13.5-14 minute pace but wants to get faster. He's a power walker right now but would like to get into race walking. There's a racewalker in my hometown that maintains a 9.5 minute pace. I can't even run that fast. Good luck with your training for the Princess.

Lisa - welcome to running! Sounds like you are on the right track to get healthy and set a good example for your son. The Princess medal is a great goal and one that you will acquire! Good luck with your training. I'm looking forward to reading about your efforts. Also, I have to mention - I have been at several races where former Biggest Loser contestants have been participants. It's great to see how well they are doing and how far they have come from their original status. Very inspiring!

Kathy - thanks for the reminder about the colonoscopy. I REALLY do need to get one this year!!!! Sounds like you are on the right track to get that Princess medal. For my first half, I found that with my training and eating right, the weight came off easier than if I just ate like I should. You and Lisa are going to make this happen and by doing it together, it will be a lot easier. Congratulations for getting out there and doing it!!!!

I had to leave and didn't get to finish my previous post (I'll try not to make this one so long).

Alicia - I really enjoyed reading your blog about the WDW Princess race. Congratulations! I loved all your pictures with the characters. My goal is to be fast enough some day so that I can stop and have pictures made with the characters as well. ;) Good job for working through the sciatica (sp?) problem. I know other people that have worked through this as well. No fun! You did it, though! Hopefully, I'll be joining you for the Philadelphia RnR race. I won a free entry; I just need to check my finances and see if I can squeeze it in. By the way, was your toe bloody from a blister? Ouch! Good thing you didn't feel it. I felt all four of my blood blisters from my first half....for five frickin' miles. :teeth:

Stephanie - congrats on completing the C25K. Sounds like you are on the right track to build up time and miles. Hopefully, I'll get to meet you and others at DL in September. I'm looking forward to seeing what the special medal will look like. As for the WISH team motto, every time I wear the WISH shirt in a race, I get so many compliments (as people are passing me.). It really is a great motto. I've been dead last in several smaller races so I do know what it feels like. It really doesn't bother me, at least I'm out there trying. :thumbsup2 Good luck with your training.

Amy - Plain Jane - I, too, love that Disney is walker, crawler, jogger, runner, skipper, fumbler friendly...as long as you do a 16-min/mile. ;) It does make it easier for those of us not up to speed. It took me a few months to be able to get to where I could do a 16-min/mile. Sounds like you are ready to begin the C25K plan. Good luck with your training and let us know how it goes. I, too, have to have a goal to exercise. I use the upcoming races as my incentive to keep getting out there; otherwise, I'm afraid I'll go back to being a couch potato.

Linda - Oh, I'm so jealous - DISNEY * CRUISE * EUROPE. Can I tag along? Where are you going? I would love to do a Med. cruise. I've been on a Baltic cruise (not Disney) and LOVED it. I love to cruise and I love Europe and I love Disney. Perfect combination. :teeth: Can't wait to hear all about your trip. Congrats on finishing the C25K. With you being so close to WDW, you definitely should do a Disney race. The whole race weekend really is a lot of fun. Does your DH like to run or walk? Maybe you can get him to do it with you. :)

Veronica - I go for the bling, also. I want to do DL so I can get that special 5th anniversary medal and the coast to coast. :teeth: As for doing the full, I'd like to do the WDW full again in 2013 - the 20th anniversary. I loved the 15th anniversary medal. I'm hoping there will be a special medal for the Donald in 2012 since it will be the 15th anniversary. I did the 10th anniversary (2007) and there was no special medal. :( I didn't even realize it was the 10th until someone pointed it out. No special mention at all.

Susie,

Yes, I do think most of my problem is shin splints. They started about the end of week 5 of the C25K, when I started running 20 minutes and more at a time.

First, I went to Fleet Feet (where I bought my shoes) to ask advice, and they said that knots in my calves could be contributing to my shin problems (which were more on the front of my leg), so I have been using The Stick to massage the knots. That seemed to help some, but now I also have pain on the inside, a few inches above the ankle area (possibly medial shin splints?). I haven't run since Tuesday, and I am still not feeling all the way better. I ordered some Zensah calf compression sleeves yesterday just to see if they will help. They should be here Tuesday. I am really frustrated because I only have two runs left before I finish the C25K program, and I really want to run a 5K on April 17th.

I am sure that some of this is because I am a new runner--the medial pain started after I started running outside, so it may have been related to the surface change from the treadmill to asphalt. I have read some articles about exercises, but I haven't done any this week because I was trying to rest. If you have any specific exercises that have helped you or that you know work well, I would love to hear them!

Thanks for any suggestions that you (or anyone else) can share!

No matter your age, its only a number. MIL won't travel to race, actually she hates racing! She will do all the training, but won't race.

My pleasure to lead our team.

Mountain climbers: watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSTK0XzbFN0 and you will see why they are much maligned.

I am going to try to put up an inspirational quote to start each week, found some on DailyMile.

Here is the quote for this week:

"If you want to become the best runner you can be, start now. Don't spend the rest of your life wondering if you can do it." --Priscilla Welch, Master Marathon Great

Since many on the team are just starting out running, I thought it was appropriate.

Lauren, there are all kinds of stretching exercises out there that are good. The best thing would be to Google shin splint exercises. You'll get all kinds of hits. One that I like to do is while sitting in a chair, stretch your right leg out and "draw" the alphabet letters (upper and lower-case) with your foot. Repeat with the left leg. Another one I like to do (along with others mentioned in this article) is the standing shin stretch.

www.sportsinjuryclinic.net

With this stretch, take the knee behind the front leg crossed over and push into the calf. This will help stretch that leg. Repeat with the other leg. I usually put my hands on the wall to hold myself up (or a tree, post, etc.) while doing this exercise. Also, the heel drop is a good stretch.

Another article mentions R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, elevation) - R.I.C.E. I've used this treatment occasionally throughout my training...especially for shin splints.

Hope this helps. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Ah, yes. I did this before in a previous life. I don't think I can do those for more than 3 seconds now. :rolleyes1

Hi Escape:

Would love to have DIS company along for the trip. We did the Med Cruise in 2007 and had so much fun, we signed up for this one. Eight days, starts in England, France, stop in Lisbon, Gibralter, and several cities in Spain. My goal is to participate during Princess Weekend next year. My DH loves to walk/hike, but not running. We are going to Rocky Mountain Park in June to go hiking. He does lift weights four times a week, so he has been helping me with weight training.

My least favorite exercise has to be traditional sit-ups. Horrors from Middle School PE:scared1:

I wish I could just sneak on board...as a stowaway. I'll just keep dreaming for now. I'm sure you'll have a great time on your cruise. Sounds like a fun trip to Colorado as well.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Hopefully it inspires you to run a Disney race - they are so much fun. I can't wait to go back and do another. I wish I could do next years' princess race, but timing-wise it doesn't work out.
You should definitely give the Philly race a try! I hear it's a flat course, which for experienced runners means setting PRs - for someone like me, it means YES NO HILLS! Let us know what you decide to do!
I think the bloody toe was from a blister or my toenail, not entirely sure. I certainly had enough sore toenails and blisters, though! I'm lucky I couldn't feel it because I can't imagine feeling blisters during a half like you did!

It is so nice to meet all our new teammates, and hear about your journeys. Looks like a nicely balanced group of newbies and experienced runners.

Thank you Alicia, Veronica, and Susie for the info on being swept. I know right now, I would be swept, but next year, who knows. Just 1 month ago, I hardly jogged one minute, and this week, I jogged half a mile. I ran saturday, so yesterday we went down to a college near my brothers house and walked the track, but it was freezing out. We did about 2 miles, and then walked around the school grounds, and through the green houses and warmed up. They had a flower and bulb show last weekend, and were selling all the bulbs so it felt soooo good to go in the nice warm palm room. It's another rainy week here, so I'll do some wii fit tonight, and plan to do my c25k on wed and friday mornings.

My least favorite exercise would be situps and pushups. Thanks for the video of the mountain climbers. The don't look like fun either.

Susie- thanks for sharing your story of your first race, and it didn't deter me at all. I know that a half marathon is such a huge step, and I am realizing that my future is in my hands only, and if I give it the time and energy and train, I will be able to do it. I know it won't be easy, but I know it will be so rewarding. I'm so happy to have everyone here for support and inspiration.

Hi Dona!! You're already a walking machine, you might just surprise yourself one day in a disney race.

Love the quote. Perfect for me right now.

The beauty is that you have plenty of time to train and get it right. You may not be ready now - most people aren't when they first start. If you keep going like you are now, you'll be in great shape and ready for the half.

If you read between the lines of my story you'll see that I really didn't prepare properly for my first half. If I would have started training to train as you are doing now, I probably would not have had some of the issues I had. I almost waited too late to get going. What hurt me the most is that I did not train during hot weather. I did not know how the heat would affect me. The socks I wore during training were good for cooler weather, not the heat we had at the half. I ate some things that worked well for me in colder weather but not warmer weather. You learn what works for you through your training. By starting now, you'll know what to expect for warmer weather. Come winter time, you'll know what to wear and eat for colder weather. Come race day, you'll be prepared! :thumbsup2

Hiya everyone! My name is Jess and I was hoping it would be OK for me to join this team. I'm new to the whole WISH thing but very eager to get started. Someone pointed me in the direction of this team and I hope it'll be OK if I join in.

A bit about myself, I'm Jess from South Bend, IN and I'll be turning 28 in just under three weeks. I'm a momma of two (Brendyn is 2 - 3 in July - and Krystyna is almost 6 months old) and happily married my my hubby, Charles, for six years this June. The day I delivered my son, I was 268 lbs and I vowed to lose 100lbs by his first birthday. Well, I did it in 11months and I started the C25K program at like the 7 month point to help with weight loss. Eventually, I gained like 15 lbs back and then got pregnant with my daughter. So now, I'm training for a 10K that I signed up to do the first weekend of June. I did W3D1 yesterday. Now I really really want to do the Disney Half in January 2011. WE want to do our first family vacation and I'm nutso enough to want to run a race during it. I'm terrified and excited all at the same time.

I only work one day a week as an addictions counselor and I'm otherwise a single parent to my two kiddos 5 days a week since my hubby is a truck driver and is on the road. Working out has been rough for me since both kids want my attention ALL the time but I've been trying to make it happen. I'm thinking we're going to get a membership to the Y in April sometime so I can take advantage of the free childcare and actually get some "me" time on the track or the weight room.

Anyway, I'll shut up now. Please let me know if I can stick around here and what I need to do. If not, if someone can point me in the right direction, that would be swell too!

Hi Jess! :welcome:

You've come to the right place! Congratulations on your quest for getting healthy and fit. Sounds like you are well on your way to a successful 10K in June. As for the WDW half in 2011 - go for it! You can do it! I did my first half at WDW in 2007. I thought if I was going to put my body through 13.1 miles of hard work I might as well do it at the "Happiest Place on Earth". :teeth: I'm so glad I did.

I think it's great that you can tie this in with a family vacation. You'll have your family there to cheer you on and you'll get to enjoy the parks afterwards. It will be a vacation you'll always remember!

Be sure to let us know how your training goes. I'm looking forward to reading your reports.

Thank you so much for the encouragement! Today was my first day of C25K. I am so glad I started a walking program first. It will honestly go down as one of the better decisions I've made in my life. Anyway, it went really well. I'm looking forward to Wednesday (which isn't something I would have expected myself to say earlier today).

Welcome to the Incredibles!

What exercise do you hate/despise the most?

Superman wins by a landslide (it's a pilates move). Lets just say it puts an uncomfortable amount of pressure on something I'd prefer not to put pressure on ;).

My least favorite excercise is jumping. I've never been able to get any sort of clearance and I get scared of falling on my face when I'm supposed to jump up onto a block or step. :scared:

I am so glad to hear you say that. I am doing a half marathon walking plan, then adding C25K to transition into a half marathon novice running plan. I am hoping that building the endurance before I really start the running will be the right choice for me!

congrats on having a great first day of C25K! :cool1: Here's to many more!!!

Susie ~ I would love to do the Nike Women's Half Marathon but it is a lottery. Last year I put my name in but I wasn't chosen. I've missed this years lottery drawing but plan on trying again next year. It has some pretty steep hills from what I've been told but you're right....the bling would be SO worth it. And the year my neighbor ran it she said that when you cross the finish line men standing next to limos and dressed in tuxes gave the finishers their necklaces. Definitely one I'd like to do one year!
