We've been invited to a relatives 40th. anniversary. We very rarely see them, and really just exchange Xmas cards. I'm at a loss as to what to give as a gift. Do people still adhere to the traditional 25th is silver, 50th is gold type gifts. 40th is RUBY- YIKES:scared1:

I'd give cash in a card...more or less depending on the relationship to the person/people.

If you can't think of a personal gift to give, I would play on the 40th Ruby thing and buy them a Red Visa Gift Card or another gift card that you find in a red color.

You can buy a red (ruby) photo album and have it personalized (Mr & Mrs X 40th Anniversary) and then purchase a few disposable cameras. On page 1 of the photo album see if you can get a copy of their wedding picture and place it in there and then bring album and cameras to the party. Use one camera yourself and spread the others around the other guests. Collect them at the end of the night and give them to the couple along with the album. It will be a nice memory of the party and can be done somewhat afforably.

Are they expecting gifts? I just say that because for my parent's 50th, they made it clear - albeit informally - that they did NOT want gifts. It seemed ridiculous to them. At that age, they pretty much had what they wanted/needed in life!!

I would definately be bringing a gift since there was no mention not to bring one.

I know a few couples who celebrated their 50th recently and they all loved a restaurant gift card. Sometimes when you give cash they don't spend it on themselves. Maybe you could find out their favorite restaurant or give one of the "chain" ones near them.

I would probably go with the "ruby" tradition and give them a really nice bottle of red wine. If you wanted something more, you could include wine glasses, charms, or whatever would fit them best. Or maybe a whole gift basket with red wine, glasses, cheeses, etc...

As I get older, I try to give consumable gifts or gift cards. I don't need/want a lot of stuff and I just assume that others feel the same.

For a couple, who liked to play the slots at casino, we gave them $50 in rolled quarter (plus another personal gift) for their 50th Anniversary party.

The funniest gift I ever saw was the time my Uncle, on his 60th birthday, who got a heavy box. When he opened it there was $60 in unrolled pennies in it.

I would do either a "ruby" (red) or 40 gift.

I agree 1st find out if the couple even wants gifts. Usually by the time a couple reaches 40 yrs they have all the junk an clutter they want. Money often is not spent on themselves.

My parents have never enjoyed eating out, they have not enjoyed gift cards to resturants usually give them away.

I do have to admit that my parents are lot older than this couple been married much longer anyway. Something they do enjoy is gift card to the grocery store, not so much Walmart, or Target type store they only shop those on rare occassions an never did like them. Food from their local store they do need tho an they like getting a few groceries that are already paid for.

I shop the Goodwills an Salvation Army stores frequently an the number of 40th an 50th Anniversary gifts I find there is amazing....usually stuff that is clearly labled for the anniversary (now if only I could find 60th anniversary stuff that cheap)
