Hi all! :wizard: I'll be heading down to WDW in May and would really like to buy an animation cel of some kind to celebrate my graduation from grad school. Since I never had the kind of money to spend on something like that before, I don't really understand all of the different types out there, nor do I even know how much an average piece would cost.

I really want something that was drawn and painted by hand and not a simple computer scan. What types of cels have y'all seen in recent visits? What characters have y'all seen lately? Are most of the cels just of characters, or are they of characters and backgrounds? What types of prices do you remember? What store is best to look for something like this (Art of Disney, the art gallery in the Studios, or somewhere else?)?

I'm not looking to spend more than about $300, so I'm guessing that will severely limit my choices, if not force me to get one that was created by computer and not hand. I definitely do not want a production cel (well, I'd love one, but I love not being in debt more!). Any information would be great, seeing as I have no clue about any of this!

There really is no "average". I have a sericel of Maleficent as the dragon with not background that I paid about $2,500 and a Fantasia dance of the hours with background for about $3,500. Then there's the Mary Poppins and Bert being waited on by the penguins that is autographed by both stars and an Eeyore production cel. Then I have some smaller pieces that I paid about $250 each. So the price runs the full spectrum.

Most are drawn by the computer then hand inked, especially on the lower end of the price range. I try not to go into Art of Disney, because I start crying, and that's not a pretty sight. If I were you, I'd go to the Main St. Cinema in MK, Art of Disney in EPCOT, Art of Disney in DTD, and the store near the animation studio in Disney Hollywood. Look at all the pieces then decide which one you like that you can afford.

There are three "levels" of cels.

The highest is "production". These are hand drawn and hand inked, and we actually used in a movie and are one of a kind. They can get expensive. If you get a "key cel" that is not only a production cel but it is framed with a backgound that is also from the production; they tend to be very expensive.

Next step down is "limited edition" cels. These may or may not have been an actual scene in a movie and are either reporductions or original. The lines are reproduced xerographically but the cels are hand inked. They will show both an edition size and are serially numbered. Again, these may have a background, but in this instance the backgound would more than likely be a lithograph which may be either a copy of an actual production background or an interpretation.

Lowest is the "sericel". These again are based on a scene from a prodution. both the lines and inking are done mechanically. These will normally have an edition size and not be individually numbered. And they may or may not have a backgound.

Acme Archives does the cels now and they are available at The Art of Disney at DTD. I don't know if the other gallery stores on property have any. At your price point you might be out of luck - they had a beautiful Dumbo one that I would have loved to have for $900+. that one might have been hand inked, i forget.

I appreciate all of the insight, everyone! daber, did those smaller pieces you bought come from WDW? Anyone else see anything, albeit small, in that price range ($200-$300)?

I'm trying to prepare myself by asking these questions ahead of time in case I see nothing in my price range (lessen the disappointment, sort of). I'm not even really thinking about feature films; shorts or TV shows are fine by me also.

Thanks again, folks! :wizard:

Got them directly from Disney, but don't remember if it was Disney Catalog, Disney Store, or WDW. (I know pretty bad when you have so many you can't remember where you purchased what). But most of them pieces I've seen in multiple locations. For example I saw a piece I liked at (what was then) MGM which I bought at the Disney Store near my house. One piece I drooled over for about 4 years and saw it in the Disney Store and at WDW and bought it at the Disney Catalog. If you don't see what you like hanging on the walls, they usually have a book of cels currently available that you can order from in the stores.

Unfortunately, there is not much new cel art available at WDW anymore. The explanation I have been given is that Disney hasn't found a company that will do them up to Disney's specifications.

There are many aftermarket dealers that sell Disney art all over the country. We used to have one here locally, but they closed a few years ago. If you do a Google or Yahoo search, I'm sure you will find a dealer that will have what you are looking for in your price range.

At the animation studios at the Hollywood Studios there is a series called "ink & paint, the magic of Disney animation." These are hand painted limited edition pieces. You can purchase them in several ways including framed with a collectable pin. My DW and I get one every trip to WDW as a momento. They range in price from 175 dollars to 250 dollars.

This definitely sounds like something that would be ideal for me. Is it just an inked character typically, or a character and background? About how large are they (or do they vary in size)? Thanks so much for the information, everyone; I've been slowly putting money away for something like this, and am hoping I'll find something nice that I can afford. In trips past, I never even looked at any of this stuff because I simply didn't have the money unless I wanted to buy nothing else on vacation.

The cels at HS are generally limited in number or run for 6-12 months. You can watch the artist doing them in store and I believe the latest ones out are Peter Pan and an Ariel one they do have backgrounds with them. You may also be able to get some of the recent ones if they have any left. Last year I purchased the Lady and Tramp and the Stitch one.

The cells are all the same size, about 10" x 12" or so. you can get them framed in a black frame matted with or without a pin. you can also get them in a gold frame as well. They are of varying charachters with a laser printed background. You'll love em!!!

I totally forgot about those cels they do at the Animation Gallery - shame on me b/c I have 5 of them! :lmao:

You can also buy these unmatted. This is usually what I do and then I pay a framer in melbourne to set them for me. I usally choose the frame and let him to the mats. I have nver been unhappy with his work. These cels are pretty much full color with backgrounds. The sorceror mickey one I bought several years ago was not, but all the others I have do have a complete color background. This might be your best bet for a cel in your price range.

You might try calling "Walt Disney Event Services" and asking them to send you a pamphlet on the "Paint & Ink" cels.
Their number is 407-827-7600; M-F 9am to 5pm.

I collect this series, with black frame and matching pin(imbedded in the mat). I have 12 of them now; just received the latest - "Off to Neverland" with Tinkerbell .

We have 11 ink and paints. Due to some cast member misinformation we are on the prowl for the mickey pirate one. But I'll find it sometime

I have that one - it came out last June. I bought it at the POTC event, b/c they advertised that it was to have event markings - it did not.

OP, if I can give you one good advice: don't hurry into buying. I mean it. It's quite expensive, so you better look out for a nice one.
I mean: you have saved for this. You really want to treat yourself. But you must have a favourite movie or character, right? Wouldn't it be nicer to wait/ see if you can find one about that?

I would love having a Disney cel too, but at this point the one I like, I can't afford, the ones I can afford, I don't especially like. So I wait :) Until I'll find THE one, lol.

I've been collecting cels for about 20 years now and it can get expensive fast. This ink and paint collection is a pretty good value in my opinion. The number of pieces that get released by Disney on a yearly basis is not what it used to be back about 13 years ago or so when animation art collecting was very hot. I have every piece of this collection and I'm pretty much out of room as far as wall space is concerned. I think there are like 25 or so now (I've lost count), but here's a link to a brochure that's about 1 year old or so

there's a www register123 dot com and the following text after the domain (I cannot post links yet)

/event/profile/web/index.cfm?PKwebID=0x80561a762&varPage=info

They have been releasing them about 2 or 3 per year and I believe the last one released was the Peter Pan one (or was it the little mermaid?).

I've been told that the "rare" ones are the Mulan and the not pictured Tarzan piece (they did not want to pay the Burroughs' estate for licensing fees to re-print the cel on the brochure.)

Originally they were released at like $65 for the Painter Mickey and I think they are now $125 unframed? I frame mine using a standard 11x14 wooden frame that I purchase at Target. They are hand painted, and make for a good keepsake, so head on over to the art gallery at the Disney Holloywood studios and browse their selection. You might also consider a TV production cel, they are one-of-a-kind and run in the 2 to 300's with a background depending on the characters in the cel.

Take your time and choose what's best for you.

Thanks!!!

I was wrong, they are up to 28 now (If you include the two pieces which were park Magic Kingdom and Epcot exclusives, I counted them this morning).
