The post office is issueing 10 stamps 4/30 titled Animal Resue:Adopt a Shelter Pet. The stamps will feature 5 dogs & 5 cats that were actually adopted from shelters. They are pretty cute and sends a good message. If you want to see them go to http://stampstotherescue.com. Ellen is also promoting the idea. Think these will be the next stamps I get from the post office.

And it benefits shelter pets by getting them food. What an excellent idea. I'll definitely stock up on those.

Sadly, I won't be buying these stamps, because they are also sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States, a radical animal rights lobbying group, who's ultimate stated goal is to end ALL pet ownership in the US. The stamps are a great idea, but I don't trust anything that the HSUS is involved with. :(

The Humane Society - a radical group?

The Humane Society - a radical group?

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is a political lobbying group akin to PETA. Despite their name, they actually don't operate a single shelter in the United States, and only approximately 1% of the money they raise goes directly towards helping animals. The rest goes to salaries, and lobbying efforts to introduce legislation that dramatically affects farmers and pet owners. Like PETA, they have stated as their goal that they would like to see an end to ALL domesticated animals in this country.

The Humane Society of the United States is vastly different from the local Humane Society in your area. I regularly give supplies and money to support our local county Humane Society, but I will not give one red cent to the HSUS. I love animals...I believe it is my moral responsibility to protect them. And they definitely need protection from the likes of the HSUS and PETA.

I was in my PO last week and held off buying stamps so I could get these, thanks for the reminder.

I just looked through the USPS site and the "stamps to the rescue" site. I see that HSUS is a supporter of the initiative, but I do not see that they are directly profiting from these stamps. The stamps are the same cost as all other stamps and Ellen's charity is buying dog food for shelters if you buy the stamps. Soooo, unless I'm missing it, I don't see how buying these stamps supports the HSUS. It actually supports the USPS just like all stamps...and it helps get more bags of dog food for shelter dogs.

Unless someone else sees something different, and please post here if you do, I don't see how buying these stamps is a bad idea.

I think that while no money is directly going to the HSUS, they also use initiatives like this to garner goodwill with the public and to show how much they "care" about animals. I just think it's another deceptive act on their part. I also know that Halo dogfood is aligned with the HSUS. I admire Ellen as a person and her passion for helping animals, but think she is very misguided in her affiliation with the HSUS. I just can't bring myself to support anything that the HSUS is a part of, whether they benefit financially or not. They wouldn't be sponsoring it if there weren't something in it for them...

I just wish that they had come out just a little sooner; I had to buy a bunch of stamps for Thank You cards and graduation announcements just a couple weeks ago! Oh well, I imagine there'll be more thank you's for AFTER graduation to buy stamps for! :thumbsup2

I see this as a VERY good reason to buy the stamps! And I think it's sad that people put their political views ahead of saving animals.

I hadn't heard about this. Will have to buy some!

I have heard about the HSUS and the "bag" things about them...same with PETA. I do love pets and animals though so I'm going to buy the stamps. People should focus their donations to the ASPCA.

Uh... what? What the heck did they think they were doing, giving us our twin kitties two years ago?? And our Cupcake six years ago??And our first kitty many years before that? I'm sorry, I just don't buy this at all.

I think you must have adopted your cats from a local humane society, or the ASPCA. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) does not actually operate a single animal shelter, despite it's deceptive name. They trick well-meaning people like you into donating money, thinking that they run shelters and save animals, when in reality they are actively lobbying to end pet ownership in the US. I'm sorry you don't buy it, but it's true.

Ok, I searched the internet to find the HSUS's opposition to animals and pets and could not find any. They are opposed to animals in zoos, circuses and using animals for any form of entertainment, however.

Oh, I think you're absolutely correct. What's "in it' for the HSUS is being linked to Ellen and to reputable animal rescue charities. Just like people thinking that HSUS and their local Humane Society are one in the same...all of it helps HSUS perpetuate their lies and morally bankrupt campaign.

And I can't disagree with your reasons to not buy the stamps...I understand completely.

"We have no ethical obligation to preserve the different breeds of livestock produced through selective breeding. ...One generation and out. We have no problems with the extinction of domestic animals." -- Wayne Pacelle - President HSUS.

"My goal is the abolition of all animal agriculture." - J.P. Goodwin, recently Director of Grassroots Outreach with HSUS

Actually, Darsa, I have to disagree with you. I don't see it as people putting their political views ahead of saving animals. It's fundamentally just the opposite. My political views are directly in line with saving (rescuing) animals. I put my money and time towards those organizations who actually DO rescue animals...and not those that use lies and manipulation to fill their coffers and benefit only themselves.

But I think it's great that we are having this virtual "discussion" and I hope we both learn something new in the process!

That is explains my question - thanks
