I think I read somewhere that you could go into the lodge and see out to some of the animals where do you do that and do you need to be staying on property.

You can visit the Animal Kingdom Lodge whether you are staying on property or not.

Once you go into the Lodge, there is a huge wall of windows. If you exit out that way, you can follow the path around and see animals, if they're wanting to be seen! There are other little viewing areas throughout the lobby as well.

AKL was supposed to be a "secure" resort. We go there often to eat, but we have PS and we have to check in at the gate.

I am not sure if they will let you in to tour or shop.

But, if you can get in, you can see animals from the ground level, outside at Arusha Rock or on some public balconies just off the lobby.

if you take a bus there, no problem. if you drive there, tell the guard you are going there to visit the resort, and they will give you a temp parking pass. (just for an hour or two)

don't forget to ask at the check in desk for a clue list for hidden mickeys. that resort lobby, animal viewing area and pool area are full of them. you can find just about all of them without having to go into resort guest only areas.
