Well, without further ado, let me delve right into the report on my (and DW's) recent stay at the AKL!...

First, as you can see in my sig, this was the very first time I'd ever stayed on Disney property. And, wow!, what a first Disney hotel to stay at!!

So, we arrive at a little after 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 21, with absolutely no expectations of having our room be available at that early an hour (and, BTW, we had reserved a Deluxe Savannah View, and had requested a view of the Arusha savannah), so we were very pleasantly surprised when the very friendly and helpful front desk CM (and, incidentally, we found all of the AKL staff to be friendly and helpful) told us that our room was ready. So, up we went to the fifth floor (nearly hyperventilating in anticipation of the awesome view of the beasties), inserted our Keys to the World in the lock, briskly walked straight to the window, pulled back the curtains, and feasted our eyes on... an awesomely detailed and expansive view of the Dreaded People Pen. And no animals.

So, okay, it was time to go back down to the front desk (which had a line, at that time of day, of approximately 2-3 people) and ask politely if we might be moved to a room with a better view. When we did ask the CM (a different one from the first CM), she told us that it was no problem, took our first set of KsTTW, gave us a brand new set, and told us to high ourselves toward room number 5371. So, again, we walked excitedly to our new (and, hopefully, permanent) room, let ourselves in, and I walked straight to the window to observe... ZEBRA!!!! I nearly wept. Then, I heard my wife mutter from over my shoulder, "Uh... honey?" I turned around and noticed, for the first time (hey, I was singlemindedly pursuing Awesome Animal Vistas) that, hm, the beds weren't made and that there was an ironing board out in the middle of the floor. I had actually walked right by it, unnoticed. Ah, well. But there were zebra!! :Pinkbounc

So we went back down to the front desk for the third time in twenty minutes (I'm sure they were glad to see us again  ) and, after thanking them profusely for granting me (us, us!) such a bewildering view of the exotic creatures, let them know that the room actually hadn't been, um, cleaned. No problem. They put a rush on it and off we went to DTD for a couple of hours (spending close to $300 in the process  ). When we came back, all was as it should be. We... were content.

And, I'll tell you, things pretty much stayed that way for the eight nights that we stayed there. We had, for five out of the seven full days that we vacationed there, Melanie R., an AWESOME and sweet mousekeeper who left us towel animals/people every day she cleaned our rooms. (If someone can clue me in as to how to post pictures here on the DIS, I'll show you pics of all of them.) We dined at Boma thrice (once for dinner and twice for breakfast), and we had (for the first breakfast) a superfriendly waiter by the name of Chaidan who, when we dined there the second time for breakfast, warmly greeted us like old friends, and even told us that, though it's not publicized, Boma offers an authentic full Japanese breakfast (including pickled fish), and invited us to try some (which my wife said no, thanks to right out, and which I, while surely tempted, was ultimately not adventurous enough to try). I truly can't say enough good things about Melanie R. and Chaidan. They embody all that WDW is supposed to be.

I had only a couple of very minor quibbles. (And, possibly, only one that, to be fair, Disney could do anything about. So, really, just one quibble.) The first annoyance was, on Monday, 8/22, waiting from 1:40 to2:15 p.m. at AK for a bus back to the Lodge. I had read that AKL has its own line of buses servicing the hotel, and we were at the absolute closest park to AKL, so I was a little puzzled as to why the wait was so long. To be fair, though, usually we only had to wait about five to ten minutes for a bus to or from AKL.

The only other quibble (and, it was a bit more than a quibble, actually) was not unique to the AKL... no, this particular annoyance was witnessed almost everywhere on WDW property. And said annoyance was: Out-of-control kids whose parents let remain out-of-control. I mean, not so much as a word was, in most cases, said to these li'l monsters whilst the little darlings ran in and out of bus traffic at the bus stops; ran right up to monorails while the monorails were coming into the stations; and actually ran up and punched people (namely, me) in the rear end as hard as they could. But, really, what can Disney do about that?

All in all, though, this was a magnificently magical vacation, for both myself and DW, and I would resoundingly recommend that anyone even slightly curious about this resort stay there IMMEDIATELY!! We are in love with AKL!!

P.S. Just a tip, if great views of animals are your raison d'etre, and you are a party of only two or three people, don't book a deluxe savannah view--just book a regular savannah view room. See, all the deluxe savannah view rooms are on the fifth floor while the best savannah view rooms are on the third and fourth floors (closer to the animals). And they're cheaper, too!

P.P.S. Yes, though I neglected to say earlier, we DID finally get our hoped-for Arusha Savannah view.

Thank you for the wonderful review. We will be staying at AKL in Jan. and this is the first time for us also. (The last real visit for DH and I was 18 years ago at the CT) Your descriptive review was fun to read, and hightens my anticipation. :goodvibes

Thanks for you wonderfully written and entertaining review! I stayed at AKL once and absolutely LOVED IT too! :lovestruc Boma is awesome...did you get to try Jiko or The Mara? They are both wonderful, too.

I know what you mean about the whacked out kids at WDW. To quote the Maitre 'D in "Ferris Bueller"

"I weep for the future." :rotfl2:

Thanks for great report.

We are actually returning there this January and we are so looking forward to it. This is the first resort we have returned to (we like to see a different one every time) but we liked it so much we just had to go back. :cheer2:

Oh, yes. I do, as well. I mean, when I was a kid, by and large, if I did something untoward, my parents disciplined me for it (and by "disciplined", I mean to say "spanked"... I knew not of namby-pamby "time outs") right then and there. But today's parents seem to be gripped with the fear that if they actually substantively discipline their children (no matter how egregiously obnoxious their children's actions may be), some omnipotent federal entity is going to whisk their darlings away from them, never to return.

Ah, well. What can you do? :confused3

Anyway, thanks for the compliments for my review. (Maybe I'll actually get around to writing my full trip report and dining reviews now.) And, yes, we did do Jiko (for DW's birthday) and absolutely ADORED it! We both got the oak grilled filet mignon with the red wine reduction, served on a bed of mac 'n' cheese and, though I'd read about this phenomenon here on the DIS, I must say that I doubted until I actually experienced it for myself (and I have the pictures to prove it... if someone could tell me how to post them here on the DIS... hint  ): Yes, you can cut it, easily, with a butter knife!!

As for the Mara, we didn't order any hot food from there, but we did buy a couple of slices of cheesecake and a couple of packs of the zebra domes/chocolate mousse thingeys with the crispy undersides (which I actually preferred slightly to the zebra domes), and they were delectable.

Glad you had a great time on your "First Time On Property" trip to the AKL.

There is no turning back now! :rotfl:

I'm so glad you had such a wonderful experience both with the resort and the cast members who work there. We will be arriving at the AKL for the first time on sunday, and are very excited. My dd's love animals and are really looking forward to being so close to them.

Glad you enjoyed it, did you book a savana view or not?
I stayed at AKL last Oct for 7 night(in a savana room) and we had a great time- i'm thinking of returing next Aug( but trying to do it slighly cheaper!) so was planning to stay in one of the basic rooms- has anyone stayed in one??
thanks
Ruth

Great review Jeff, we too had a problem with out of control kids-almost every time we are at WDW. We have two children so it isn't like we don't like kids. But, we would NEVER let our children act like some parents let their children act. My Kids are not angels but as far as running in front of the buses, hitting people, that is just uncalled for!

Also, as Jeff mentioned. We were at AKL and had a 2nd (or 3rd) floor room and the animals were right outside our room. We had the notion to upgrade to 5th floor concierge and alas the animals were all below us under the trees and you had to do allot of bobbing and weaving to see them. It was great though. It was our first time trying concierge and that was the trade off. If I were to do it again, I would stay on the lower floor and just pay for the upgrade to get to the concierge and not move to the 5th floor.

Yeah, you're tellin' me! :)

I've been telling DW that, as awesome as this trip was, it seemed like, whenever I went out to look at the animals, I was doing so through a camera viewfinder. So we have to go back for at least a second stay so I can see them with my own eyes. :rotfl2:

That sounds like an interesting idea. I didn't know you could do that. So what did you think of the concierge? Was it worth it? I know I'd love to do the Sunrise or Sunset Safari, but, other than that, I can't seem to find enough other reasons to spend an additional--what?--$200 a night? But, on the other hand, it would be cool to have the little goodies to snack on, and it might actually save us some money eating in the parks or at the other resorts... but then, I might miss dining at some of my favorite places.

Sheesh, can you tell that it takes me forever to make a final decision?

dh and i are going in jan 06 and want cl perks but really want a good animal view. what is a good plan to have both!?!

Hi Jeff,

Loved your report!! We are also staying at AKL in Jan./Feb. It will be our first time at this resort and we are really looking forward to it. I've asked for the 3rd or 4th floor, hopefully we will get a good view!!! I'm glad to hear that the CM's were wonderful to you, we had a rather "ugly" one last year at POFQ, it wasn't anything bad, I just don't appreciate anyone being "rude" or less than "disneyesque" friendly when you are checking - in. Anyway, that's another story for another time. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and Thanks for leaving me some zebra domes!!!! ;)

To those going in Jan. Feb. post your dates please, If you want too........... maybe some of us will be at AKL together!

My dates are Jan. 29 - Feb.3, 2006

I am so glad you enjoyed your stay AKL. We stayed there in Sept. of 2001 (1 week after 9/11) and had a wonderful stay. We are going back this Thanksgiving!

Thanks for the report, do you have photos of the AKL perhaps?
We are leaving Saturday!!

LOL, Laurajean! You are too funny! :rotfl2:

Folador-I think Jeff *wants* to post pics...but doesn't know how. Alas, neither do I. I can't even post quotes...how sad is that???? :guilty:

Jeff-I think there is a thread...maybe a sticky even...on the "technical" board here on the DIS. Check it out...there will be instructions there on how to post pics. :teacher: I tried to figure it out once but even with the step by step instructions, it was not to be. :confused3

Ruth B-No one is gonna agree with me, but I SWEAR...next time I go to AKL I will book and KEEP a pool view. We had one booked on our last stay there, and were upgraded to savannah...and I kinda wish I would have stayed pool view. At night there is nothing to see on the savannah, and even during the day...I kinda felt like, "ok, I saw a zebra once, I do not need to see another one." Just my two cents.

*WLL ducking as Savannah Lovers throw petrified giraffe turds at her*

Jeff-Mmm...I loved the African Stew served in a bread bowl at the Mara. DH loved the fish and chips. That is great you got to go to Jiko for your DW Birthday! I have not yet tried the famous filet...but I will next time!
