I don't know how to use spell check on the Dis boards so please excuse any errors in spelling. I'm typing this with a sick kid climbing all over me, who is whinning and feverish. Obviously it's "Job" not 'lob". :)

We are a family of five. We know that starting in Sept. we will have additional costs of about $150 per month. :headache:

We already live on a dime, we are always looking for ways to save money. We eat very little meat, We use 1/2 cup of fresh meat for sauces, chili, or soups. We never have burgers because it takes more meat then sloppy joes, We never have whole pieces of meat like chops or chicken, it's always cut up into casserols, diced, or shredded into our food.

We eat loads of beans, which are a good source of protein and carbs. We have enough vegis, and unfortunately, loads of carbs- three of us are diabetic so this isn't really the best choice for food, but we have to eat and carb choices, like potatos, rice, and pastas are cheap.

We hardly never have "junk" and if we do, it's one or two treats shared among us all. I've looked at many meal planning sites to stretch our food money dollars.

A friend suggested AFM and I checked it out on line.

Based on food prices in our area, I pinch every penny, and the way we cook, I can't see much of a savings. I compared price for price with the available menus and see a savings of about $5 per box over what I usually pay for our food.

While I'll take the $5 I'm just wondering if I'm missing something? I thought it saved an average of $30 or so per box ordered according to their web site for the same food purchased in the local community.

Money advice or job advice

I'm hoping that someone might know of resources or ideas that I might not of thought of yet.

I've been looking for computer work at home as I stay at home with the kids, all three have extensive medical needs, one is considered terminal, but he is thriving, way past the average age of death due to his medical problem.

I've read and checked out all the links from recent WAH threads posted here.

I shuttle the boys to various medical appointments, out of need. There's not a week that goes by that I don't have one or another sick. DH can't leave to take care of them as he commutes an hour each way to work daily, so it falls to me.

All electric appliances/lights are turn off and unplugged when not in use. The heat wasn't turned on last winter until around Thanksgiving, believe me, we were cold, the wind is very cold as it blasts off of Lake Erie, we are about 10 houses off of the lake, cold is probably an understatement. We keep the heat at 50. The cool air is only on when it gets over 85, and then only to cool the house for a few hours until we aren't sweating too much. I have a heart condition and the heat makes me ill. We wash all loads of laundry with a full load with cold water. Most things are hung out to dry.

I've done ChaCha and Expo TV. In the past I ran a small home daycare, but since my hearing decline I haven't kept kids because couldn't hear them cry ect. Also, parents don't want a sitter who has to drive all over the place for medical sevices every week with their kids in tow. I would love to keep a new born but it's not looking like it's going to happen.

I've worked, ages ago, I worked as a paraprofessional in a Physo-Ed facility, as as an assistant bank sales manager, a substitute teacher, managed over eight retail departments on my way up through management training before I married DH and quit to move in with him in another state. I've been an assisted living coach for special needs adults, and cared for two terminal patients, I sat with them and helped keep them comfortable, reading to them and getting them anything that they wanted or needed. These jobs were ones I worked before my kids were born. I worked some of these jobs two jobs in the same time frame.

I am now hearing impared so all at home call center/customer service jobs are out, all three boys have extensive medical needs, daily therapies, and bills, we are paying for past emergencies, hospitalizations, medications, moving debt, and the list goes on and on.

I've held yard sales, made crafts, collected all of our bottle deposits, and just pinched every penny till it squeals but have reached a dead end.

My husband has a great job, we just can't get out from under the constant costs of living with our medical needs and so on.

We have to pay all of our bills on time. We try to pay more then minimum on CC bills, often only a few dollars but it all counts. Most of our expenses went on the cc when were were between jobs. There are maxed out, then last winter, after NEVER missing a payment, paying extra, paying off the cards repeatedly, when we couldn't pay off the cards in full but paid minimums on time, the interest on our cards almost doubled. On the one I used it went from $139 interest per month to over $240 interest per month, that's interest, not principle. That is our biggest problem in being able to get these cards paid down. After house bills, insurance, medical co-pays. food, and so on, all of our flexible, not really flexible, income goes to pay the cc minimums at this point.

We moved to Western NY from Georgia for a better job for DH. We can't sell our house in Atlanta as the market is bad. DMIL lives in the house so it shows better and she pays the morgage. We are thankful for her help.

We have two houses, one with $150,000 still owed and another with $98,000 owed. On paper last year's taxes showed that we made $105,000. The truth is that we used an $40,000 IRA years ago to pay old bills and when he quit his old job to start the new one, the loan repayment was dropped but shown as income so we had to pay early withdrawl fees. I believe that the moving van and a few bills were also counted as earned income as some of them were paid by his new employer.

DH's income is easily a quarter below that amount. He makes good money but I haven't been able to contribute much and that income for a family of five, with three special needs children, doesn't go far. We don't qualify for help, as we have insurance through DH's job. We look great on paper but reality is nothing like what we look like on paper. We are one paycheck/illness away from losing it all.

We don't live high on the hog, as a matter of fact we live very thightly. My kids get one pair of shoes yearly for school, except the little one as his feet are still growing quickly, they are wearing their clothes until they are faded and falling apart. They do not have the newest anything, except what their DGP's buy for them for holidays.

Both of our vehicles are paid off, DH needs one to get to work and I need one for the kids school, and medical appointments. We can't carpool together as I would have to drive a total of four hours daily just to get him to work and home- an hour to work, then home for me only to repeat the trip in the afternoon. The gas alone would be more then the cost of insurance on the second car. We combine all driving errands so save gas. My oldest DS is not driving as we can't afford the car insurance.

DH has been looking for another job, he's worked as many as three at one time but he is now overqualified for many. I have several health issues that make life difficult, I could work at night but would need to still be alert and awake to take the kids for their appointments during the day.

DH is a director of financial planning for a major business, this is his new job, he is great at it, our financial problems do not come from money mismanagement but past problems, we've always paid in full before any and all vacations, so no debt there. There's been no vacations for two years, we did manage to get a weekend at WDW May of '09' because DS#2 played in a music festival there.

DH's job would be in jeopardy if we contact credit help or can't pay our bills, trust me, the company would know.

The company wouldn't want someone in charge of their money if they thought that he couldn't handle his own. We are walking a very thin line.

Our youngest goes to 4-k this year so I'll have uninterrupted time most days for work. I can work most hours 24/7 at home but do need a flexible job due to the kid's unexpected needs. I never know from day to day when I will be in the hospital with one of them. I've looked for months trying to find a telecommuting job. Most seem to be scams. Many want money to start up home businesses, and those that don't, are asking for skills that I don't have.

I'm limited in my computer skills- I can email, post, print, and search, but don't know how to do business things like spread sheets, reports and so on. I'm a quick learner. I do Pinecone, among other survey sites when I get invites.

I've got an associates degree in Early Childhood Education. I don't have money or the time needed to go to school. There's always the problem of the kids medical management needs.

I'm feeling very overwhelmed at this time.

There are some choices that I might have made differently had I known the future at the time that I made them. For the most part, I am comfortable that we made the right money choices over the years.

The only thing that I can think to do is try to find a night job. My youngest is only in half day 4-k starting after Labor Day, so he's gone from home about three hours daily, not really enough time to work part time anywhere outside of the home during the day.

I volunteer for AFM and there really isn't any savings if you are already a budget shopper. This really is a savings to people with limited mobility because they can't get out to shop the sales, those who are lacking transportation to get to the stores to get the greatest savings, those that live in areas where there are are no places to shop and stretch the budget. This would be a great deal for my MIL or a college student, it isn't a great deal for me. A college student could stretch a month from the package, while a family might get a week.

Well, I'm glad I didn't miss anything then. I just couldn't see where my $ savings would be since I'm such a penny pincher now. The service seems to be a great one. I just couldn't see the savings for us.

Hi Neighbor! (I'm in NF, NY)

You are in a tight spot, and Angola isn't exactly a mecca for jobs.

I think you're on the right track, do you use coupons too? I have a friend who volunteers for AFM also, and we got in a lengthy discussion comparing a box to what you can buy with sales + coupons at the grocery store (in my case, Wegmans). I really analyze does it cost less to buy an item with a coupon + sale or make it myself? Like you, we avoid "junk", and I'm not brand-specific. Homemade laundry soap? Line drying clothes? (well...not today, it's raining! boo!), every little effort counts and sometimes it's hard to put a price on those efforts.

My DH and I work opposite shifts, I'm also in graduate school, with 2 kids we had to cut out daycare costs. It's not an ideal arrangement, the second he gets home I am out the door to work until midnight. However, I cherish our weekend dinners around the dining table!!

I'm going to keep an eye on your post for ideas I can use too! Good luck to you.

Agree this makes it tricky. What if you called the credit card holder directly? It couldn't hurt to try.

You said you have an Associates degree in Early Childhood Education, with your medical issues would you still be able to substitute or be an assistant in a preschool or daycare center?

Not to hijack the thread, but have you applied for SSI? Also, even if the children don't qualify for SSI (based on DH's income) you still should qualify for Katie Beckett. You don't get cash assistance but I beleive it will help with medical/prescription costs.

Good luck.

I know I put a ton of personal info out there but am hoping for someone who might have a thought or two or an answer, like a job. I almost deleated the post but a tiny part of me thought it might be helpful. I'm sure most people won't read a novel but again, any help might be part of the answer.

As MonkersMama said, my town is out in the country, not too bad but not many jobs available close to home after tourist season is over. Oh, and Hi neighbor!;) If you are familiar with the area, I'm near Evangola Park.

Virgderon, I thought about calling the cc company directly but am worried about contacting this cc company as they are the only one that hasn't dropped our available credit as we paid down the loan. Unfortunately, the cc is our only emergency money-
:sad1:

We don't have a dime in savings, a very small amount in a retirement account, DH started to deposit a small amount into the new IRA account when he started his new job.

We haven't been too bad about money management but have had a string of things happening since we moved from the fridge needing replaced, had to do that as we have insulin to keep cold for our diabetic child, to the heater needing serviced, apparently it hadn't been serviced in years by the previous owner and needed some TLC. We had to buy snow tires since we moved from the sunny south to the snowy north! :scared1: Add those to the snowblower, winter coats, boots, clothes and so on..

One child had pnuemonia last fall, one broke his arm in school in gym, the same child later had a skull fracture falling from a play prop, at school-:rolleyes1

At least he had the courtesy to get hurt at school to keep us out of the spotlight for abuse! :rolleyes1 He was in the ICU and then a regular room in the hospital for a while. He lost hearing out of one ear, it's back now, and was vomiting blood.

The youngest was admited to the hospital two times for severe asthma problems and once for excessive diarrea. After weeks of repeated dr visits and being told not to worry, I took him to the er, he was in bad shape, they admitted him, he had some kind of infection, he was given iv's with antibiotics and steroids that cleared it up. The diarrea caused dehydration.

I've read about Dave R. but am having a hard time putting his plan into action. I'm torn between paying extra on my cc and trying to put up some small amount in a savings account.

And so, life goes on. I'm just tring to prevent more problems by trying to get some money into the house. :teacher:

You said you have an Associates degree in Early Childhood Education, with your medical issues would you still be able to substitute or be an assistant in a preschool or daycare center?

I am seriously going to make sure I'm known at the school this year. I'll be volunteering all the time. That way, next year, I may be able to get a sub job while he is in school all day.

Substitute teaching is a great way for me to earn money. I've done this in the past. The only problem with this is that my youngest is only in half day 4-K from 8:45 to 11:15. That means child care for the rest of the day and I'm sure that would eat up a good bit of the day's pay.

Although, he will be going to a public school, the parents have to provide transportation for all 4-K children to and from the school. It is understood that there is no after school care for the 4 year olds at the school and no transportation to a daycare center for the same kids. I'm couldn't leave the job to drive him over after school this year but next year things should be better.

If I apply for a daycare center, I'm afraid they will need me on a regular schedule.

Thanks for the thought though- it's in the plans, I just need the money this year.

happily single: I'll have to look into Katie Beckett. It hadn't really occured to me. I have an adult cousin with Autism who got this help at one time. Her parents had to go through a great deal of work to get the help. It's worth it, I just figured that we wouldn't qualify for any help.

When we were young, our first born had tons of medical problems, our apartment was in a flood- some of you southerners might remember it, it was over July 4th weekend in 1997 in South Georgia in Americus and Montizuma.

Many people were killed. We just happened to go visit DMIL/DFIL that weekend and weren't in the area when it was hit. DMIL sent us gas money to come visit as we didn't have it at the time. They lived about three hours north of us so we just lucked out.

We couldn't get back to the apartment or DH's job for over two weeks as the area was declared a disaster area and no one was allowed in.

Due to that, Dh's job place folded and we were out of luck. We needed help and qualified for medicade for our child. We used it for about a year. We worked but had no insurance.

We then were able to get private insurance as Dh got a better job. We didn't use food stamps, or other programs they offered because we were able to feed ourselves. They were upset with us and said that we couldn't pick our services. We were young and thought that we were saving the food stamps and so on for those who needed them more then we did.

So, we started out rough, had a hand up, left the program as we pulled ourselves up out of the flood/job problems. We've struggled since then but not as badly as now.

First a great big hug!:hug::hug::hug::hug: I've been in places where it felt like we'd never get out or ahead.

ARe there daycares or a YMCA in your area? Many have after school programs for school-age children. You can make arrangements to take the 4 y/o with you-often at no charge. I did this for years for the Y and LOVED it. And my Y was pretty flexible with me.

My DS13 makes about $90 a month delivering the weekly newspaper in our neighborhood. My neighbor makes about $300 a week delivering the daily paper, but she works 7 days a week from 2-6 a.m. and someone told me that the "door store" (the weekly ads that are dropped on our porches) deliverers make about $300 a month, but I don't know for sure.

I make extra money just doing "date night" babysitting on the weekends or sometimes during the week. About $40-50 a night just doing a craft, making a snack and watching a movie. Pretty simple. I usually watch kids around 4 y/o or older.

I suppose filing bankruptcy is out of the question, given your DH's profession.

Have you asked your church for help with your medical bills and prescriptions?

Have you asked for financial aid from the hospital for help with the bills and co-pays? I know you said you look great on paper, but if you include a statement explaining the "phantom extra income" it could help.

I'll try to think of some more ideas.

I am not sure if you are able to do this with your hearing issues or not. However you could look into inbound phone work. I have been with Liveops for a number of year. It is very flexibile-I am able make my own schedule each week. inbound home phone jobs
If you are a writer there are alot of writing jobs out there that you can do and get published.

Would any of your children qualify for ssi? I'm not even sure if that's what it's called but with their medical conditions I would think it's possible.

I know you mentioned being hearing imparied. Do you, by any chance, know sign language? I attended a 6 week session on teaching my baby to sign from a SAHM. It would be a great business for you to start. You could teach it for extra money and it appeared easy to do if you know how to sign.

I did not have a problem getting together a group of 5 moms who wanted to learn sign. Then, the instructor came to our house one hour once a week. She brought her little ones with her with our permission. We paid around $100 each (the hostess was discounted) so it could possibly add $500-600 a month to your household income.

The instructor also did sessions at our local library and it was a great way for her to build up her business. I can't say enough good about Baby Sign. I wish I knew about it for my first two as it really eliminated so much verbal frustration that first year of life!

It seems you've exhausted most normal budget cuts and now it's time to begin thinking outside of the box. You might also see if there is any help you can receive from your local church (even if you received one bag of groceries per week from a church program, you could use the extra money for the heating bill). I can't imagine it's healthy for your little ones to be cold in the winter.

I'll say a prayer that things get easier for your family!

Never noticed wher you live! Oops, I am not far from you and spent all my summers as a teen at Evangola. Good times and great tan!
Knowing a bit more I can say for certain subbing now with the need to provide daycare in the pm part of it will not help you at all, but are there hall monitor jobs out there? I know in the district I teach in the hall monitors are half day shifts and they switch out. Be on the lookout for these things early as you move into the full day school thing withthe kids as well. Cafeteria monitors, Time Out room supervision, subbing on a regular basis will all be things you can use to pay down that credit. If you are thinking Dave Ramsey, you need to just be ok withthe no savings while you pay down the CC. You already have both CC and no savings, you need to attack the one that causes the most pain and prevents you form getting ahead. You are not that far from the Greater Buffalo area, where there are many more job opportunities especially in IT. Is it possible for you to consider relocating? My nieces father lives in Angola and it is only about 15 minutes from whre I am in Hamburg, many people do commute form Angola to Buffalo for work.

If your hearing loss is so severe you can't do phone/daycare work would you qualify for SSI?
Have you tried Ebay? I go to yard sales/thrift shops and list the finds on Ebay and bring in a reasonable chunk of change from that. You'd need to research what sells and such, but you could go hunting when DH was home or kids at school..or even take the youngest to thrift stores with you. It helped me get through college and now helps fund our trips..so..it can be done.
If you're crafty you could try Etsy...I'd love to but have no extra time.
Good luck to you :)

Is there a sub list for the 4-year-old program? What about mothers morning out programs at churches, YMCAs, etc.? You might be able to do either of those while your child is at school, and they often follow the school schedule as far as holidays go.

I'm sure there is a food pantry somewhat near you (even if you are out in the sticks). Please take advantage of it. I volunteer at our local pantry and it is an honesty policy. People do not need to "prove" that they need the assistance. Please take advantage of that. I know a lot of people don't because they don't want to swallow their pride (not saying that's you). What about driving a school bus? Perhaps you can look into that. Is there a McDonald's or other restaurant near you that you could work nights at? A lot of stores stock their shelves at night when the store is closed. Perhaps you could look into that a few nights a week? Another way to save on groceries is to cut out purchasing drinks (soda/juices) and just use your tap water. That can save a lot of money.

Good luck. I hope things get better soon!

Thank you to all of you for the great suggestions.

Next year my youngest will be in all day kinder-this year he is only in half day kinder.

I found out that you need a four year degree to sub in the state of NY. Since I only have an associates, that's the first two years of school, subbing is a no go for now.

So, I think I will look for work in the school system next year, I can do anything, no pride will stand in the way of earning an honest dollar.

I believe that the only 24 hours store in our area is the Walmart, it's about 35 mins from our house but close enough to get to work. My DH drives into Buffalo daily and that drive would make me crazy. It's an hour each way- in to work and back home again.

I'm still a nubie on driving in the snow and ice since I was raised in Georgia. I'm not sure my nerves could handle the winter weather driving just yet. I'm told it was a mild winter last year yet it was enough to make me a nervous nellie! :goodvibes

I'm feeling a little better tonight about everything, the money is still owed but I've been doing a lot of praying and thinking. We've always found a way some how with a little help from above.

Just getting it off of my chest helped tons. Everyone has great ideas and I think i'll be doing a little research into some of them.

Thanks again for the suggestions, there were a few of them that I hadn't thought about.

I have started using Opinion Outpost and make about $50 a month doing online surveys... it's not much, but every little bit helps. ( http://OpinionOutpost.com ) It pays you in checks, and everyone you refer who completes a survey gets you $2 . The friend who turned me onto it makes about $50-$60 a month too. I don't qualify for all the surveys, but every little bit helps and it is all going into our Disney fund!

If you're patient with children, and you sound like you must be, how about tutoring?

If you have a skill that children might like to learn - scrapbooking, sewing, etc. - you might consider contacting local homeschool groups and seeing if they're interested in having a class run through the fall, in the morning. If you scheduled it on a set pair of days, you could save the other days for appointments.

Pet sitting while people are on vacation? My youngest once had a job where he played with a new puppy while all the family members were at work or school. This puppy really needed the extra hour of play!

How about working at the polls? My parents do that every time there's an election.

Good luck!

NHWX

You may not be able to substitute as a teacher, but you should be able to sub as a para. It's not as much money, but it's still not bad and it's flexible. One more thing, have you looked into doing respite care? It sounds like you have a lot of good qualifications for that. I think each state is different, but you would essentially be babysitting a child (or developmentally disabled adult) for a few hours on the weekends usually. Parents or caregivers with kids on SSI are allotted a certain number of respite hours a week. You would get paid directly through the state. The pay is pretty good and it wouldn't interfere with all the things you need to do during the week.

Also, please be careful with the carbs. My suggestion is get up close and personal with eggs. They are cheap, versatile and an excellent form of protein.
