Has anyone here ever used Angel Food ministries...if so, how did you like it?

We've tried it a couple of times. I thought the meat was really bad. Everything else sort of compared to what you would get at Aldi's, if you're familiar with that store.

For some reason I also found it to be a terrible inconvenience. I don't shop on Saturday morning, so getting out to collect my delivery was not my thing.

Neat program though. I would say it is worth trying once if you like the looks of the menu.

We tried it and will not be using it again. The meat didn't look good and the food wasn't very good quality.

My mom used to get their food & I agree with the bad meat :sad2: They always offered really fatty, low grade meats. The other items were so unhealthy too! She & so many other families stopped buying, that the church stopped doing it.

Angel Food doesn't have very good quality of food, so unless you (or someone you know) are barely getting by I not purchase their food.

I don't know if it is regional, but we always had great luck and use Angel Food a lot. This month I was too late to order, but will for Feb. You can also do a google search for codes, they generally are a few dollars.

We have had a few long threads with the pros and cons on the forum try a search the forum and see what pops up.
I was not impressed with the signiture box for Feb, but the Bountiful Blessing Box for $41 looks good. A huge thing is using what is in the box. My dd has even used the stable milk, she is lactose intolerant and does fine with it.

I know I had uploaded pictures of what I have gotten. full pies. great amounts of chicken breast, tenders, nuggets, mac and cheese casseroles, roast, steak, pork, a small tenderloin or something small i had a fajita type box and did lots of that type meals. The veggies are awesome, rice, beans, One thing for sure., there is enough there for several meals and they have recipes that will go with the food box for the month so it takes the ease of what to make for dinner.

I shop Aldi, and I prefer these meats over Aldi, i like Aldi for the fresh pizza, can goods, butter, baking items, fruit, love the red grapes and pineapple. Between Angle Food, Aldi, and few local bogo I cut our food bill by 2/3 but a lot of that was impulse buying. Not shopping the extra items are no longer there.

We are also using from the freezer a lot of items are frozen in Angel Food, and canned items add to make soup and stews.
I have used my bread maker. Also buy frozen rolls, they rise in my iron skillet pans then I brush with melted butter a pinch of rosemary bake in the skillet. Along with the dry beans for Angel Food and yummo. Some dogs on the side, or in the beans, is a fav.

Just remember what you have in the freezer, tape a note to the fridge so you plan meals around it and do not forget it is in there.

Oh, my teen dd like the packed meals, she adds a salad and I get the veggi box and she is set for any needs.

Could Someone post the link to the menus they have for the months box, brain fog right now....

Angel food is not a discipline, it is an experience in another way to feed your family. Some of the most successful dinners the last year have been food from Angle Ministries, and my Pioneer Woman Cookbook, online or purchased.
Great gang on here with great ideas for the new boxes offered each month.

thanks everyone for their comments. My hubby has been laid off 2 years now with no luck finding a job!!! Unemployment runs out in 2 weeks and I have to find a way to cut cost...this looked like a good idea!

My DDad get's it all the time. He said it's good. He "cooked" the other night. It was the chicken fettucini. ;) The funny part about that is when he got his first box there was a lot in it that he said he would love, but they had some kind of "pasta stuff" in there and he didn't know what he was going to do with it! ;)

We have done it before. We don't do it anymore. It was a lot of processed stuff (lots of breaded chicken and boxed mixes) and although we aren't purists, there was stuff we just won't eat.

I have friends who have found that it can be about the same prices as Aldi's or as couponing or shopping the flyers at your local supermarket.

DH asked me not to get it again after we ate quite a bit of grissly meat from our last box (3 or 4 years ago now). So, I stopped.

If you really need to save on food (which, don't we all really?), I found this website to be VERY helpful. I don't do everything she does (we don't eat much beef for example) but even if you follow some of what she says, you can save a lot.

We have used it once. It was actually pretty good that month- the meat was very good actually. Could be a regional thing though? I am in western NJ. I have not seen items though that I was interested in yet for this year. I am not a fan of the beef and mac thing that's been on the menu the past few weeks.

To the OP what has saved us is really watching the loss leader sales at the grocery store. Every week the store will have one kind of meat on sale(Pork, beef or chicken)- The first few weeks you get on one item overload- but after the initial stock up filling the freezer. The other weeks are easy. For example if you look on the eat at home thread you'll see we are having a roast chicken tonite- last night had beef and broccoli and tomorrow is Turkey meatballs I think? So we are on a good rotation week. I can't believe I didn't know that before.

We are a family of 6 I can keep the weekly budget right around $100- this week was higher as it was a stock up week $130(but I saved $120!!:cool1: with stuff on sale)

Also look for "packs" at the grocery store. It's cheaper to buy a mixed pack of pork. Then say just pork chops. Also learn how to cut your own meat. A pork roast on sale can be easily turned into chops.

We had beef and broccoli last night because strip steaks were on sale but still $5.99 a pound. I bought a little under a pound ($5 worth) but used it in the beef and broccoli. A little meat can get stretched a long way.
Good luck and the internet is your friend there are TONS of $5 dinner sites.

Wanted to add that the premade meals were a great item for my single Dad.

Quality may very well be regional. We used them several times when DH was on unemployment and thought that the food was just fine, especially considering how much you got for your money.

I did find the whole process a little inconvenient, but when you absolutely HAVE to cut corners, you figure a way to make it work.

I'd say give it a try one month and make your own decision.

We just got the January bountiful box. We like it but I have to see the menu first and decide if we will be eating most of the items on there. If not, we will wait until the next month to purchase. Some foods are processed but we dont care about that. Some things are VERY good and some things are okay. I've priced it out and even with coupons, I believe you are saving a lot actually with the bountiful box. I find it to be worth it as long as we use most of the food. And someone said its inconvenient but I feel its completely the opposite. It saves me a lot of time because otherwise I would have had to spend a good 2 hours at the grocery store getting the same stuff versus pick up the box and go back home!:woohoo:

There is a lot of differing opinions on this. Why dont you just try it for one month and decide for yourself if you like it?

By the way our local place also does an "free extras" table. Generally baked goods from local places. Think "day old" kind of stuff or almost expired kind of stuff. Like salad blends.

I have tried it before. Mostly processed foods- and as others have said, the meat was very poor quality. You could do better with loss leaders and planning in terms of both money and health.

i used to get angelfood packages every month. when i wasnt doing the couponing i do now i saved me so much money i was able to cut my food bill in half. i never had issues with quality. i made some really nice meals out of what i got.

I think it must be regional as to what food they get. I tried it for a few months and the meat items were pretty much inedible..I feel like I wasted money, some of the things were so bad they were just tossed. I don't use them anymore.
