And yet another borrowing question

I should really know this, but it's never come up for me before...

I know you can only borrow to complete a reservation, and I assume if you own at just one resort you have to use current year points first before you can borrow.

But, if you own at multiple resorts, and want to book at a non-home resort, can you borrow points from one resort even though you have current year points from several other resorts? (I know it's not an issue if booking at 11 months since only home resort is in play.)

eg, you own at resorts A, B, C, D and E, and have current year points available at resorts A, B, and C. You want to book at resort F and borrow points from resorts D and E to do it.

I believe you can do that. Think of the scenario where you are booking your home resort at 11 months and need more points. They would have to be for that resort, so having other resorts' points wouldn't do you any good anyway. I know that not your situation but I think it all works the same for borrowing.

I actually think they would not do that since you still had current year points in other contracts. I had something similar a few years ago and ended up doing the following.

So if not what you could do is book a dummy reservation for resorts D and E for the home resort priority that would require borrowing. Once that is done then cancel and book the reservation you want using those borrowed and current points.

(actually I just remembered that I did it a little different. I booked a dummy reservation using up current points I didn't want used and then booked the reservation I wanted to borrow for and then cancelled the other reservation. Same principal just a different way to do it).

Interesting. I just don't recall ever seeing or hearing about those type of borrowing restrictions, but since I only own at own resort, no personal experience.

A few booking changes have occurred since I had the situation so I don't know if it still applies but at that time the CM said it wasn't even an option in the system for them to borrow if there were still current points that could be used. I don't think it's an actual borrowing restriction per se.

This happened to me too, a few years ago. I wanted to borrow some of my VWL points when making a reservation 7 months out. I had current BWV points in my account but was saving those for something else. The MS CM would not (or could not) borrow the VWL points while I had current UY BWV points available.

After ending the call and thinking about it for a bit, I called back and made a reservation that used exactly the number of current BWV points in my account, then made the real reservation, borrowing some VWL points. A bit later I called back again to cancel the dummy reservation. It was a few years ago so things may have changed.

John: Did you try making the reservation online to see if the booking system will let you borrow the points?

I haven't tried to make the reservation yet. I have a little while before the 7 month window opens. I do want to make it online at 8am EDT as it may be a difficult reservation.

I could bank the remaining current year points, so there wouldn't be an issue. And that's probably what I would do anyway, but I would prefer to wait until later in the UY to do that. (I definitely want to keep my BLT and VGC points for use at the 11 month window at those resorts.)
