and the stocking were hung by the...hold up I don't have a

We follow my parents' tradition of filled stockings being left outside of the bedroom doors. The kids are allowed to open them and play with whatever is in them before DH and I get up. We did this partly because I liked the idea of a little more time to sleep and partly because we didn't have a fireplace in our last house.

We do have a fireplace in our current house but no one wants to change things now. We hang the stockings on the bedroom doors until they are filled Christmas Eve.

They're hung by the chimney. The chimney is brick with a wooden mantel. DH put cuphooks into the bottom of the mantel and they hang from those. We have a pellet stove insert and they look so traditional hanging over the fire. The hooks are strong enough that I can fill them and leave them hanging.

My parents don't have a mantel as they don't have a traditional chimney but they do have a half wall with a counter on top in their living room (the other side is a down staircase) that she hangs stockings from. She also has cup hooks in lip of the counter.

We don't have a fireplace so our stocking hang on the door of our coat closet in the living room by command hooks.

Ours are hanging on our fireplace but next year it will be gone. My dd's first question was where are we going to hang the stockings then?

I didn't have a fireplace growing up and I don't remember my stocking being hung up at all, it was filled and put under the tree.

We have a two-story stone fireplace, the thing of Christmas dreams. The problem is that the mantle is also stone, so we couldn't figure a way to attach a heavy stocking to it. At one point we had these heavy stocking holders that sat on the mantle, but I was afraid our kids would pull them down when reaching up for their stocking (that could be deadly). So we just fill ours and throw them on the floor near the tree, with the rest of the gifts.

Stockings go on the banister until they are filled. Then they are on the dining room table on Christmas morning.

Ours are on the wall with the 3M command hoods. No problem with them falling off, even when filled. You have to get the hooks that hold a heavier weight.

I made wire hooks out of very strong wire and stuck them through each stocking loop. They can hold a fair bit of weight. When empty (before Christmas), I hang the stockings on the burglar bars on the living room windows. If the stockings end up too heavy when they are filled and cannot stay hanging, we just lay them down somewhere - on the couch, the curio cabinet etc.

Thanks for all the ideas. It was the command hooks I have used in the past with no luck maybe I will look for the heavier ones. Although the stocking were empty. I will have to look for stocking holders.

I used to just drape them over the back of the couch when empty, then lean them standing on the cushion against the couch back when full. Now I have a fireplace, but no little kids :(

My parents had a vinal 2D fireplace that hung up and you put the stocking on it. One year she hung them over the floor furnace but I think that made mom too nervous.

Technically in the beginnings of the tradition the stocking hung at the foot of the bed (or if in the Nordic countries thier shoes sat on the floor by thier bed).

Don't think Santa really cares.

The lack of fireplace in my condo is a sore point for this very reason. Real homes, in my opinion, have fireplaces and mantels to hang stockings on with care.

Ours currently hang from the back-lighted mounted shelves where we keep our bar glasses. They have to be laid down somewhere when full, though.

In the master bedroom closet filled with goodies.

I don't put the stockings out in advance anymore. I fill them up and put them in the master bedroom closet. It ensures that I don't buy too much for the stockings.

Christmas eve after the kids are in bed, I lay them under the tree because then they are too heavy to hang on the fireplace mantel.

I have a stocking rack that says "and the stockings were hung.........."
I bought it years ago at a craft fair. The stocking pegs are the old fashioned square nails. I love it.
We just moved into a new house and for the first time ever we have a fireplace. I hung my stocking rack above the fireplace, below the mantle, it is perfect

we'd either tape the stockings to the bookcases, or the tv cabinet

now we've got a real fireplace and mantle - that's where they're going now!

under the air conditioner:rotfl: Its one of those huge wall mounted ones thats perminatally installed. i used those fancy chair tacks t:rotfl:o hang them ( the ones that are like heavy duty thumb tacks) and they stay up

I know Santa doesn't care. BUT I have some pretty cute stockings I want to put on display.
