And me, with no ointment...

Had to work Friday nd Sunday, and Saturday was our Annual Pumpkin Carving Extravaganza! House full of people, yummy food, roasted pumpkin seeds, Halloween cartoons for the kiddies, and here are some of the results!

The star of the evening, James carved this pirate ship in stormy seas. It took him *6* hours.

here is a "pumpkin in a pumpkin" carving. The trick-or-treaters are carved on a tiny pumpkin which is then inserted into a larger pumpkin with the trees carved on the bigger one.

Here are my "Sorcerer" pumpkin, Ariana's "Wolfman" and Alyssa's "Funky Kitty". The girls carved their pumpkins all by themselves.

Actual trip report coming later today, I promise! I need to go get my pics resized and uploaded...

Those pumpkins are amazing!!!!!!!

Can't wait to hear how you went on you day with........ Colds

We were ALL up bright and early (some of us bright-er than others) this morning. We had plans to rent a car and drive over to the coast today to go to the beach and visit family. We had made arrangements to rent a car from Alamo at the Hess Car Care Center located at the Magic Kingdom. They will send a shuttle to your resort to pick you up and take you to get your car, so we had arranged for a 7 AM shuttle.

I was definitely feeling sickly. My sinuses were all snuffy, I had the sneezles, my throat hurt, and my chest was already feeling rattley. Refusing to admit defeat, I doped up on cold medicine and threw several more doses in my purse. I will NOT be sick. The previous evening, I had called my grandma to let her know that the girls had been sort of ill, and that I wasn't feeling tip-top - did she still want us to visit? I didn't want to be responsible for exposing two unsuspecting elderly people to the Creeping Crud. No way in HE** were we missing this visit, she said, come on over.

Everyone got dressed, we grabbed a bag we had packed for the day (swimsuits, lifejackets, change of clothes, sunblock, etc) and headed down to the food court with our mugs. We grabbed beverages (HOT tea for me this morning *SNIFFLE*) and hopped onto our shuttle, which was right on time. After cruising through a couple of other resorts (POFQ, SSR, and OKW) to pick up a few more families, we arrived at the Car Care Center.

As is typical, I managed to be in line behind two HIGH NEEDS families. They were confused, bothered, and bewildered and taking a LONG time to get their car issues sorted out. Thank heavens for a TV in the lobby showing classic Disney cartoons; no one had had breakfast yet and we were starting to get a little cranky. Finally it was our turn, and since I had made all of my arrangements ahead of time, we were on our way in about 5 minutes. We got a pretty decent rate; a full-size car with car seats for the little ones for one 24 hour period of time for $103. For anyone who has thought about renting a car, but doesn't have (or doesn't want to use) a credit card, you CAN rent a car from Alamo at the Car Care Center without one. You may pay by Debit card or with a check, provided you can show them a WDW reservation and a return air reservation. I guess the return air reservation proves to them that you will bring the car back, since you have to go get on a plane to go home. Anyhow, just an interesting option.

We got our car, and got on the road. First order of business, we stopped at a Ponderosa buffet for breakfast. It was pretty good, all you can eat, no-frills, but decent hot food, and a darn sight cheaper than Disney! We filled up our tummies, then ducked next door to a WalGreens to buy more cold medicine. back on the road again, we headed out of Kissimmee via Hwy 192, going east.

This is a pretty nice drive, but this morning, simply because we wanted to get where we are going, we just couldn't catch a break. Construction zones, big trucks, slow drivers... I think we went 45 mph the whole way. ARGH!!! Finally we arrived in Melbourne, and got to Grandma's house. Lots of family stuff occurred that has no place in a Disney report, and after spending a few hours with them, we headed off to the beach.

Melbourne beach is so pretty, I just love it there, and the water is SO warm! Caitlyn and I spent some wonderful relazing time on the beach, looking for shells and digging holes and letting the edges of the waves curl around our toes, while Ari and Daddy and Alyssa played farther out in the waves. The surf was quite strong, and after being whooshed off her feet a few times, Alyssa got tired of the waves and joined us in shell-hunting.
dsci0412.jpg

After a few hours at the beach, we went back to grandma's house and showered the sand off and changed clothes. The little girls just showered off IN their bathing suits, because as soon as they got all the sand off they spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying grandma's pool.
dsci0409.jpg

More family came over to visit, and we spent the rest of the day hanging out and chatting. Grandma loves to cook, and is a wonderful cook; for dinner that night we were served a veritable feast of pasta, homemade marinara sauce with italian suasage, a huge tossed salad, and warm, toasty garlic bread. For dessert we had a gigantic homemade cheesecake. James proclamed this "the best meal he ate on the whole vacation!" :rotfl:

After dinner, we loaded the car up, and had to take our leave. Everyone was very sad; grandma would love for us to be closer so we could spend more time together, but we were glad to have had the time we had together. She loved being able to spend time with the girls; she had never even met Alyssa and Caitlyn before this, and Ariana was only 5 the last time she saw her.

We headed back to WDW, and the drive went smoothly until we got onto Disney property and had to try to make our way to POR *in the dark*. I will, with great embarassment, admit that we got quite lost. At one point, we ended up in the parking lot of Epcot. James threatened to lurk in the parking lot until a Disney bus with RIVERSIDE on its marquee happened by, and then just follow it home. This would have worked nicely, except it was WELL past closing, and busses were rather few and far between. Finely, by sheer luck, we wandered around the road system long enough that things finally started to look familiar, and There It Was! The Riverside sign! PHEW!! :scared:

We parked the car, made our way to our rooms, and fell into bed. (Another note, before we left we went to the concierge desk, explained what we were doing, and they gave us a parking pass for the car, good for any lot, for as long as we had it.) It was REALLY late, and we had to get up in the morning, get ready to go to the parks, and have the car back to the Car Care Center before 8 AM (24 hours from when we got it) - meaning we had to drive on Those Roads again! :scared1: Needless to say we wanted to get an early start on things.

THE FOOD REPORT We ate no WDW food today, so not much to report on. The Ponderosa buffet on 192 is decent, basic breakfast fare. My grandma is an awesome cook, but you would really have to hit that 180 day mark to get an ADR in her dining room. Even then, no guarantees - they go out dancing at the Polish Club most evenings. :)

THE POOH SIZED REPORT Nothing to report on here either.

WHAT WE LEARNED TODAY We really really enjoyed our day off. Next time, we will probably plan 2 or 3 days off property. It was relaxing and refreshing to be with family and at the beach instead of running around like the proverbial headless fowl.
Also, always, always pack medicine. Although I did have to buy more, what I had packed got me through until I could get to WalGreens. I would have hated to pay WDW prices for cold medicine if I hadn't had any with me.

Up in the next few days: returning the car, Whispering Canyon Cafe, Magic Kingdom revisited, and dinner at Boma. :surfweb:

Great update! I loved hearing about your beach day! Alittle over a year ago my DD and I took a trip mommy daughter trip to WDW and had a few beach days at Cocoa Beach. The beach is awesome! Sounds like you had a great family day also!:goodvibes

Great update.
I LOVE Melbourne. My MIL rented a house there for a winter and we went to visit her. It was beautiful.

Sorry about the
I can sympathize. We leave on Saturday and my entire household is sick! :sad2:

Great update.:thumbsup2

Hate to hear you had a cold on vacation.:sad2:

Sounds like a great visit.:goodvibes I love the beach...

Looking forward to more.popcorn::

Hi all!

So sorry this languished all weekend! Our phone/internet went down Friday evening, and we were incommunicado allll weekend. Not having a phone wasn't so bad, cause we have cell phones, but being without internet got UGLY. I admit, I am a wee bit addicted. LOL :surfweb: And of course, CenturyTel had no sympathy for me whatsoever - you know the drill: "A technician will be out within the next 3-4 days." ARRRRRRGGGHH!!!

So anyhow, late yesterday evening they finally tracked down the problem and everything is working again. I survived (but only just barely... *twitch* *twitch*) and I am sure glad to have my DisBoards fix again this morning! :disrocks:

Caitlyn and I are off to WalMart this morning to buy Ratatouille, and after I get home I will start uploading pics for my next installment. Hopefully I can get it up this afternoon!

Thanks for hanging in there with me!

Everybody up and at'em! Wake up sleepyheads!

On my customary early morning stroll to the food court this morning, I used up some snack credits on a couple of bottles of juice and a couple of muffins, as well as filling a couple of our refillable mugs. We had an ADR at Whispering Canyon Cafe this morning, but it was at 10 AM, and the kids would be hungry. So I got everyone up, gave them their snacks, got them showered and dressed, and off we went. We had to get going early this morning, because we had to return the rental car no later then 8 AM and we were SO nervous about the drive to the Car Care Center. We needn't have worried though, it was SO much easier then the night before! I am sure broad daylight played a huge part in things, but we didn't get lost once, and zipped right over there in good time. The car return went very smoothly, and quickly, and before we knew it we were on the shuttle bus, heading to the Wilderness Lodge.

What a gorgeous place this is! We live in the middle of National Park country, so after the grand lodges of Glacier and Yellowstone, WL doesn't elicit quite the WOW factor that it might if you hadn't ever seen these places.. but it is still a gorgeous work of architecture and landscaping. We had about an hour to kill before our ADR, so we did a little exploring.

dsci0452.jpg

I was so excited to find the totem pole! Along with Donald Duck and Eeyore, Humphrey the Bear is one of my favorite characters! I LOVE the cartoon where the ranger makes him pick up all the litter in the park before he can have his supper. Anyhow, we had to have a picture with Humphrey!

We checked in for our ADR shortly before 10:00, and were seated very quickly. I wish I could say I was impressed with this meal, we had such high hopes for it, but we ended up rather disappointed. I wish I could even tell you what we ate, but somehow I have mislaid my receipt for this morning - probably because we paid cash out of pocket for this meal instead of using the DDP, so I wasn't as focused on keeping the receipt to keep track of credits. I believe James had the Tenderloin Tips with Eggs, and I think Ariana and I had the all-you-care-to-eat skillets. Alyssa had pancakes, and I think Caitlyn just had bits and pieces of what everyone else was eating. The food was good, not overwhelming, but good. However we had made this reservation because of the interactions and hijinks, and those were sorely lacking. Maybe it was because of our late seating, maybe it was because the restaurant wasn't very busy, maybe our waiter was just having an off day, but the fun just wasn't there. We tried asking for ketchup, and got exactly three bottles. I asked for a LARGE iced tea, and got a normal sized one. James was going to try asking about the waiter's six-shooter, but he wasn't ever around long enough to strike up any kind of conversation with. We were sad. There were no stick-horse races either. Not sure we would go back here.

After breakfast, we hopped the boat to Magic Kingdom. It was a beautiful morning, and we had a very nice ride.

dsci0467.jpg

We had a great day in Magic Kingdom, save for one thing: as the day wore on, James started to feel ill, and he got worse and worse. Luckily I was still sick (but feeling much better) so had cold medicine and Advil in my purse. He took some meds and was determined to carry on.

Crowds were SO much lighter today. We couldn't believe how easy it was to do what we wanted to do, and how much we got done in just one day. We started in Frontierland, and rode Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain, then saw the Country Bears. Next we headed into FantasyLand.
Obligatory really pretty castle picture on the way to FantasyLand:
dsci0474.jpg

We grabbed FastPasses for Pooh, then rode Peter Pan. After this, everyone needed a drink and a rest, so we stopped in at the Pooh playground. The little kids played while James and Ariana fetched lemonades and iced teas.
dsci0487.jpg
dsci0488_edited.jpg

After we sat and rested for a few minutes, our Pooh fastpasses were ready so we rode Pooh, took a spin on the TeaCups, then headed off to Toon Town.
dsci0501.jpg

James and Ariana and Alyssa rode BarnStormer, then we wandered through Mickey and Minnie's houses. Lines were unreal to actually go meet the characters, so we skipped that part. Next we headed in to TomorrowLand, where we decided to stop in at Cosmic Ray's for some lunch. Ariana and James and I had bacon cheeseburgers (Yay for toppings bars!!) with carrot cakes and sodas, the little kids both had chicken strips with fries and grapes. This food was yummy and satisfying, and we had the joy of a nearly empty restaurant (it was like 3 PM), air conditioning, and seats right down front for Sonny Eclipse's show. The kids LOVED eating here and watching Sonny.

After lunch, we rode everything in TomorrowLand again. No one would listen to me, so James, Ari, and Alyssa even went to see Stitch. They regretted it. :sad2:
dsci0512.jpg
dsci0516.jpg

On the way out of Tomorrowland, I shot this awesome picture of the castle - as you can see our beautiful blue skies had clouded up on us.
dsci0517smaller.jpg

Finally, we made our way over to Adventureland. We rode the Jungle Cruise, and Pirates, and even got to walk right in to the Jack Sparrow meet and greet! I love how they have this set up, it's inside, out of the sun, with really cool pirate theming and artifacts. Our Jack was awesome, he had the mannerisms and the voice down perfectly.
dsci0524_edited.jpg

Finally, against my better judgement, we caught the Tiki Room show. Small rant warning: Rant Ahead. I LOVED the original Tiki Birds... I am SO glad it lives on in California, and I will do my best to wipe the WDW experience from my brain and remember it as it should be. What a farce this is. What a waste and what a tragedy. This is SO not as Walt intended it, and I am sure he would hate it as much as we all do. Ok, Rant over.

I had one more tradition to keep; a ride on the train. It was about 6 PM, and we were done with everything we wanted to do in Magic Kingdom. We wandered back into Frontierland, and up to the train station. We hopped on the train, and took a nice leisurely ride back to the Main Street Station, where we disembarked and left the park... Bye Bye till next time, Magic Kingdom! :sad1:

We caught a bus to the Animal Kingdom Lodge, where we had a late dinner ADR at 8:30 at Boma. I was beginning to be really worried about James, he looked terrible. He couldn't breathe, he had a sinus headache, he was weak and achy and tired, he alternated between pale ghostly white, and flushed with fever. I could tell he just felt miserable. I kept asking him if we should just skip Boma? We could head back to POR and he could take a hot bath and go to bed? Nope, he kept insisting that he would be fine, and he didn't want to spoil the evening. Fine then, be heroic. :sad2:

Our plans this evening consisted of exploring the AKL, viewing the animals from the overlooks, catching the storyteller at the firepit, and finally dinner. We enjoyed looking around the lodge and the grounds, and settled in at 7 at the firepit. They didn't light the fire, because it was too hot, I think. A wonderful young man came out in beautiful African robes, introduced himself, had everyone around the firepit introduce themselves, and then told some African folktales, with lots of crowd interaction.
dsci0577_edited_edited.jpg

After the stories, he invited everyone to follow him inside. He led us to the gift shop, where he gathered up all the instruments and noisemakers he could find and handed them out to everyone. He led us back out into the lodge, where he taught everyone a simple chant/song with lots of beating of drums and ringing of bells with a refrain of "Affffrika, Afrika!!". Then he led everyone on a procession around the lobby to sing our song, and at each end of the lodge he would stop everyone and have them keep singing while he would break out into a whirling dance, arms raised high, robes swirling, yipping and ay-yi-yi-ing at the top of his lungs. It was quite the sight!
dsci0582.jpg
dsci0590_edited_edited.jpg

When our procession made it all the way back around to the gift shop, we returned all the instruments to the giftshop, then all of the children got a YOMD Certificate of Participation in the AKL Procession. By this time, it was time to check in for our meal. Opinions were mixed on Boma. I really enjoyed it, but then I am the most adventurous eater in my family. In particular, the carrot ginger soup was divine, and the falafel was very good as well. Ariana liked it quite well too, but the little girls weren't too happy. For one thing, this was just TOO LATE for them to be eating, they were ready for bed. I knew this when I made the ADR, but I REALLY wanted to try Boma, and this was the only time we could get. For another, they are both really picky, and this was just too adventurous for them. And poor James, by this time, was feeling SO miserable  that it didn't matter what he tried to eat, it all tasted nasty to him, and he wasn't hungry, and he just needed to go to bed. So we finished our meal, and caught a bus to DTD, and from there caught a bus to POR. The kids went to bed, and James took a nice long hot shower. Then he took lots of cold medicine, and crashed out.

THE FOOD REPORT kinda got included above. In short, we were disappointed in WCC and probably wouldn't go back. Cosmic Ray's was a very good CS option, especially during an off-time when it was not crowded. I very much enjoyed Boma, but the rest of my family wasn't that impressed. I would like to go there again, but it may have to wait for a trip when I have friends along so my girl-friends and I can enjoy it without the Picky People.

THE POOH SIZED REPORT = As before, beware the turnstiles at Magic Kingdom.

WHAT WE LEARNED TODAY
Crowds are much more manageable on weekdays than weekends at Magic Kingdom.
Tiki Room Under New Management sucks. Or as my 13 year old says (cause she gets in trouble for saying something "sucks" at school) it "inhales with great force".
Travelling between parks and resorts using the bus system for things like dinner ADRs is really time-consuming. If you have a late ADR and you don't have your own car, call a taxi. Leaving AKL at nearly 10 PM meant we had to go to DTD, then wait there for a POR bus or take the boat. It took almost as long to get back to POR as it did to actually eat our meal. Serious PITA.
The firepit presentation at AKL is a lot of fun. If you are going to be at AKL, consider making time for it.
Being sick at WDW stinks. A lot.

Your right, being sick at WDW does suck! I remember all too well from my last trip! It should be outlawed!

Said I would come visit and here I am!! So good so far, I read 1 day of getting to Disney and skimmed through the pix! Now back to reading the rest :goodvibes

Chip

OK NOW I'm JEALOUS, you got a picture with my boyfriend!! I searched and searched for him both times I was in the MK but he was off chasin' the other wenches!! Oh and is the TIKI room as bad as Stich?? Stich was HORRID and I went against my better judgement and what I had read and took the kids because they begged me, that ride was just plain STUPID!

Sounds like a busy day. And doing it all while sick!!:worship:

I do not know if they do all the crazy stuff at breakfast @ WCC. I have only been for dinner and lunch. Nothing at lunch and dinner was crazy. Sorry it did not live up to your expectations.
Love Boma. The chefs will help you make choices to if you need it. (I can not eat shellfish) Food is a little crazy but GOOD. Love the fireside chat. We stayed there and only made it one night. Wish we could have enjoyed it more. But we had to be at the parks:woohoo:

Can't wait to hear more

i agree with you - let's outlaw it! Or, better yet, let's introduce legislation saying that anyone who is affected by illness while in WDW gets a free do-over trip! :cool1:

Hi Chip! Welcome!
Yep. I got a picture with Jack! Jack put his arm around me! I loooooves me some scurvy pirate!
Here's the deal with Tiki Room. In order to understand the magnitude of the BAD that it has become, you have to have experienced what it used to be. I have seen it many times in its wonderful original form, pre-change in WDW and currently in DL. Then to sit through the farce that it is now, the LOUD, RUDE, uncouth mess that they made it by trying to add the over-blown personae of Iago... well, it just disgusts me by comparison. I dinna like it. But to carry on...

Welcome to my TR anyhow! I will be checking yours for updates!

Hi Wirki!
Yeah, *I* thought Boma was great, We don't have any food allergies to worry about, but some in my family have too many "food dislikes". :lmao:
And I don't know if James could have been helped either, unless the chef wanted to offer an IV line of Nyquil. LOL But it is good to know that the chefs are so willing to help.
I loved the firepit thingie too... but I kinda wish they had lit the fire. I know it was hot and we didn't NEED the warmth, but it really would have "plussed" the atmosphere. :goodvibes

Oh my gosh, I just caught up with your report, and I have to say those pumpkins are amazing!
We were at VWL from Sept 26-28. Isn't Wilderness Lodge the best!
