I've stayed there lots of times; I can help!
The walk, from room to turnstiles, takes about 10 minutes; however, I've not done the walk with kids, so I can't advise on that. It's a nice walk, not too far, and not scary/isolated at night.
I've not stayed in a family suite, but the regular rooms with 2 beds are really big...about 1 1/2 to 2 times as big as a standard hotel room in the DLR area. So, there's plenty of room to spread out; in a standard room, I've stayed in a party of 4, and it didn't feel cramped. Another bonus is that most of the rooms have either a large balcony (big enough for a couple of adults to sit out on) or an enclosed "yard" (would be great for kids to play in...they could be outside, but you could still keep an eye on them!).
There are small refrigerators & microwaves in the rooms.
I've never had an issue with cleanliness in all the times I've stayed there. It is an older hotel (built in the 50s), but it's been well maintained & looks better than many of the hotels in the area that aren't as old. The bathrooms have been immaculately clean every time I've stayed there, which is important...no mold or roaches. The sheets and linens aren't the best, but they've always been clean, in my experience.
Parking is PLENTIFUL...even when the hotel is pretty much full in the summer, there's not a problem with parking. It was also free as of last summer.
The grounds are very nice, with mature landscaping (ie: sooooo many huge, beautiful palm trees!) that's well maintained. The pool is fabulous...it's HUGE (half-Olympic size, IIRC) and, more importantly...heated. There's also a hot tub.
Any other questions, ask away!
