Have you ever worked at a company , where a favorite employee was given an "Invented" position. Or a new position was created for a person?

It happened where I work yesterday and we are all still....:rotfl:

I was working as a temp at an office when I got out of school and they liked me so much they invented a position for me. It happens probabyl more than you know.

I know,at a regular type job.

We now have 2 Chief Operating Officers....at a Flower shop. :rotfl:

I always wanted to work at a flower shop. The smell would make my day every day. You are so lucky!

I wonder if there is something else going on behind the scenes in your situation.

It happens a lot. Especially if the person is really good or has a particular set of skills. A company saves a lot of money by getting a good person on board than they would waiting for a natural job opening and running the risk that the good person woudn't be available.

It happens all the time either to retain a very good employee as a way to give them a raise/promotion or to put a bad employee that you can't fire for what ever reason in a position that can do the least amount of harm to the company.

We have quite a few that fit under scenario #2 above. Completely inept human beings who do just enough not to get fired. So, they get put in "special projects" jobs, hoping to minimize the damage to the company and other employees.

Yep! Lots!!

Anywho...the drama over the next few days will be interesting.

It does smell divine, but it is a lot harder physical work than most people imagine.
:hippie:

YUP! I used to work at a hotel, where i was just front desk. After about 2 months on the job, they created a Concierge position just for me, since they liked the way I interacted with guests. I got to pick out EVERYTHING. from my desk all the way down to my pens. It was fabulous, and I went on to be a concierge at several hotels and resorts before quitting to plan my wedding and then become a SAHM :)

Isn't that called the "Dilbert Principle?" Love that comic strip...so much of it is so true!

An old boss of DH's had this happen at the university he works at. He didn't know the first thing about being a manager. One person quit and went to another department and DH almost quit. Rather than firing him, the old boss was moved to different areas then finally to a person who was just there to get grants. He finally moved out of that department and is somewhere else in the university.

But it all worked out in the end for DH. The boss that replaced the old one was there for a few years and just recently left for a higher position at another university. DH now has that job even though it's an "acting" position. He will be applying for the actual job when it comes up. We are very glad that he stuck it out otherwise, he wouldn't be where he is now.

That's exactly what happened to DH's former boss. The jerk was demoted and given a "special project" to work on all by himself. :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 He is an unethical *******, he should have been fired.

My last job was at a Fortune 200. There was a lot of nepotism, and a lot of "favorite sons." I can't tell you how many $100K + a year jobs I saw created. That was the most middle management bloated company I've ever worked for. It actually destroyed productivity due to all of the meetings and reports that had to be done by the worker bees to make the managers look like they were actually doing something.

It also destroyed a lot of morale because so many time people who were entirely undesrving got HUGE raises and promotions because of who they were sleeping with or drinking with or related to.

This is kind of along the same lines ... I have been working at a company for almost four months as a temp. They seem to like me a lot but haven't hired me because they just came out of bankruptcy and corporate won't allow them to do any hiring. Anyway - a few weeks ago they fired one of their supervisors. In the meantime, they have made me the interim supervisor. I'm a temp! Some of the people I supervise try to give me a hard time because I don't work there and they feel like they don't have to listen to me since I'm just a temp. Not really the same thing as having a position created for me, but I just had to share this. I've been doing the job almost three weeks and they haven't even mentioned hiring me and they haven't given me a raise (via the temp service). I know they are just using me, but I'm glad they like me well enough to put me in a position they obviously don't trust their real employees with. :rolleyes1

::yes:: Same here, although the really crappy employees, especially ones in higher up positions, go on "special assignment" and then are never heard from again. :rolleyes1

This just happened with my DH. His old boss wanted DH to work for him, so he called him and gave him a job. DH is good though and will benefit the company greatly.

DITTO, it happens a LOT more than people think. Good for you! You were a valued employee and the company showed you that they appreciated you and didn't want to loose you.
I am an executive assistant for a president of a company. In the years that I have worked, I've worked for presidents, CEOs and COOs. Honestly, I think this is a nice thing for a company to do, especially when the employee has given many years of service.

they did that to one of the guys at my work. i hate it because he's such a jerk. he doesn't deserve the position, he treats everyone like crap except for the managers, who he kisses up to, and THAT'S how he got the "new" position.

I always thought it was interesting watching people who were useless move up the corporate ladder as "the suits" promoted them to get them out of their hair. We liked to call it being promoted to a higher level of incompetence.
