An Invasion of a "STRANGER" Kind.... NEW THREAD IS UP!! Go Thee NOW!

Joseph WILL be air lifted out right now. That's all I know. I don't know where to yet, except "Europe". As soon as I know where, I'll let you know. If they are coming your way, Magdelena, I'll make sure they can call if they need to.

Keep up the prayers. Last I heard, he was more responsive. Also, learned that it was his own dad that even NOTICED he was not breathing. That right there is a pretty good picture of the kind of medical care we (don't) get here. :sad2::scared1::eek:

So scary! :scared1: Joseph and his family will be in our t&p :grouphug:

I had this turkey on a chibatta roll. It was really good! It was huge too!!! If you did cancel Brown Derby, I'm sure you could save 1/2 of the sandwich and bring it with you to DHS for dinner. Add a snack from Staring Rolls or another treat or two you could save yourself some $$$ or dining credits.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT THIS!!!!!!

I had the same idea for if I was going to eat at Earls. There's no way I could eat a whole one of those, and would save 1/2 for eating while waiting for F! So, a sannie from POP would work too. Lo Mein- not so much.

I definitely WON"T forget about that!!! :woohoo: I'm a cheesecakey kind of girl- not to be confused with cheesy. Which I just proved incredibly wrong as that statement itself was rather cheesy. :rotfl2:

So scary! :scared1: Joseph and his family will be in our t&p :grouphug:

Thanks ever so much. They are playing the "let's fight with our insurance co. game" right now, so last I heard air lift is on hold again. Sheesh!! Poor kid. No lie, he's probably getting a Vit. C drip for treatment. :sad2:

OOPS ... I ended up posting here but realized this morning (how I'm functioning better this morning versus last night I have no idea) that these guesses were to go to you by email.

I pass on apologies - and I hope my guesses didn't garner any "cheats" (nah, the Dis'sers wouldn't do that).

OK - so Liesa this was GREAT fun ... I LOVE your PTR!! I can't help imagine though that I'll be akin to one of those saps playing the "match game" on the old school "Price is Right" show. I've placed all my "cards" on what I hope are the right matches ... I run back to press the button and ... "Whaaa-Whaaa-WHAAAA!!" ... 1 out of 7 correct?????

Thank you for the smiles

hope all things work out for the good for joseph and family

They will have a consultation first thing (probably happening right now) with the Western run SOS clinic doc to determine if he should be emerg. evac'd out. I should know more as my day progresses.

But a miracle did happen... Read this:

"And, J. (Joseph's mom) was permitted to stay with Joseph last evening.. It "so happened" a doctor, the only one on this ward who speaks English is on duty and told J., "I know how things are done in western hospitals and our way is very difficult for you. I will allow you to stay with Joseph." We are praising Father for this gift."

Quoted from My_Pal_Pluto:

Wasn't that fun??!! I knew a good planner like you would enjoy it. Now, as to your answers... I can't say anything, yet. FOLKS, still have one last day to make their guesses!!!!

I don't know about any of you, but when a hotel is finally booked for a vacation, everything just seems "right"!! Finding the right place is far more than just seeking out the best place to lay one's head. For us anyway, the hotel really defines the character of the trip. It needs to be a good fit for the makeup of the group personality wise, have enough space AND fit the budget. There's so much thought that needs to go into it, and ponder long and hard we did- for our little 2 day stay

IN NUREMBERG, GERMANY!!!

I had to do some sweet talking in order to even score this sidetrip on our way back Stateside. For me, it represents, in many ways, the end of the life of adventure we've been leading the last 10 years. It is also, for me at least, the beginning of my month-long, last hurrah before our family begins the long journey of re-patriating back into American life, moving houses most likely twice, getting kids into schools, finding a job for DH, and a vast myriad of many other life changes.

So, likely being our last trip like this for a very long time, maybe even ever, I really want our time in Germany to count. It isn't long, and like most things in life, I want to make the most of it, squeezing every last drop of opportunity from it.

After some long hours of poring over internet sites of places to stay in Nuremberg, we came up with something that fits the bill. We both knew we wanted something that, at least in our tourist shaped imaginations, said, "This is Bavaria". To us that means wooden beamed buildings, gabled roof lines, pubs in every block, bakeries to indulge in just around the corner, and castles within walking distance. Maybe I'm way, way off, but images of a little dancing Snow White come to mind.

Guess what??!! We found it!! We will be staying here:

Isn't it lovely?? It's old. It's got exposed wooden beams. It's within walking distance to a castle (REALLY!), and get this............

It's got the Schnitzelria Restaurant!!!! Can you get more Bavarian than THAT!!????

:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

I think that's one of the funniest things I've come across in a very long time. It's like Mama Mia's Meets Helga's Kitchen.

Here's a link to our Nuremberg digs, in case you're interested.

Anyway, we don't know a thing about Bavarian history, culture, NOTHING! We have a LOT of reading to do, before we do the seeing. I wish we could stay a year in order to really go deep into the area, but we will have more than enough time to have a beer, have some coffee and strudel!!!, see the castle, walk in the church, take a boatload of pictures, and best of all....

MEET FLOSSBOLNA AND NODNOL!!! :woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:

Other maybes on the list: go to the Albrecht Durer museum, see the underground cellars system, see the Nazi Colosseum, and ????

Wow, I'm totally jealous of you and your globe trotting! I was privileged enough to travel a fair amount of the globe when I was a child, but of course, I didn't appreciate it. I hope to explore some more as an adult and, as you said, squeeze every drop out of the experience!

I'm glad Joseph is doing better, even if just a touch. I hate insurance. Want to say lots more about that but don't want to insult anyone that may be in the business. We purchased a trampoline last fall, with net and bumpers, as a way for Phoebe to get moving. She loves to swing, but at 8 yrs old I've finally given up trying to put her in the baby swings. She's still skinny enough but too long for me to lift over the swing to get her in. Parks around here don't have any accessible play structures. She was terrified at first but loves it now. My worry is that the neighborhood kids all beg to jump on it and their parents all work, so they are bored, unsupervised and come to me because I'm home. The parents all know about the tramp but we've never had a discussion about it. One of my rules is NO WRESTLING. The boys like to pretend they are cage fighters or something and attack each other. I tell them every single day and they still try to do it when I'm not looking. Even with the net and bumpers I know that they are rough with each other. Hearing about your friend, even though I don't know the details of what caused the injury, has prompted me to write up some kind of contract and have the parents and kids go over the rules and sign it if they want to come over here and jump. It may not even be legally binding but I would feel better knowing that they accept the rules and understand my view and expectations.

I have a feeling it (the travel to far off, exotic places) is about to end. At least for a while. Our passion hasn't changed, but feeling like we need a new focus for a while as our kids move on.

The hotel definitely is a real old building. Exposed beams are common in Nuremberg - check out this picture of the street which is supposed to be the most picturesc in Nuremberg:

weissgerbergasse-6.jpg

But the Schnitzelria is not authentic at all! :goodvibes It is rather a bit of a tourist trap thing, but I have some friends who rather like. :thumbsup2 Schnitzel means a certain cut of meat, not the preperation method. And you will find at least the Schnitzel Viennese style (i.e. the breaded one) on nearly every traditional restaurant menu in Bavaria. Other popular preperation methods are "Jägerschnitzel" (hunter style, not breaded with a mushroom sauce) or "Zigeunerschnitzel" (gypsy stlye, and I know that this a political uncorrect term, but the german dish still uses this term. This is not breaded and served with a tomato based sauce with bell peppers in it).

Sorry about leaving you hanging like that!! I could tell my power was going to go off, so quick posted!

I'm back now...

So, yeah, trampolines.... scary! I don't know the whole story, but apparently it was their own. He flew off and his the back of his head on concrete. Why it's near concrete, I don't know!

I'd feel better with a net and bumpers for sure!! Legally binding?? I know nothing about that- maybe an attorney on here could pipe up??!! Anyone. Anyone??

WOW!! Yummo. The street AND the food! I can NOT wait!!!

I totally knew the schnitzelria was a fake- I mean no one who wanted to be authentic would go with that name!! We looked at the menu using Google Translator and it didn't look even remotely good.

We'll rely on you two for good recommendations, and hopefully, if you're up for it a shared meal one night. I'm also going to lobby for a lunch with the ladies. We'll see how far I get with that... :confused3

I MUST walk up that street!!

OK, now a question for all of you loyal readers, both now and hopefully in the future...

I'm really stymied on WHEN my TR should start- or rather WITH WHAT should my TR start? I could actually start my thing all the way back to when we leave Blankastan, and work toward WDW. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR

I could just start with when I leave from Dulles.

I know it will all be really fun and good stuff, with a ton of great pix and stories with 2 or maybe even 3 Meets; and in my mind's eye, my vacay really starts with leaving here.

but I need some feed back!! Help me out here

The hotel location is great! nearly everything is in walking distance, because it is inside of the old town wall!!! But be prepared for some quite steep walks, the castle is on a hill and you're close to the castle...

I think a shared meals sounds great. We can teach you German table manners ;)

I got the impression that most people on the DIS start their TR with leaving their home or even the day before with last preparations and end with arriving back home. As your home is in STAN right now, I think it would be correct to start with leaving STAN and arriving at your new home.

I like that everything is really close. And by the time I leave here in 4 1/2 months, I should be well on my way to finishing the C25K thing. Although, hills won't be part of my routine ;) HA! There isn't a hill within 400k of us here over 25m tall. :lmao:

Uh-oh, I think I'm a little afraid!!! I assume picking my nose is out?

That' what I thought too, but there will be a while 2 whole weeks in fact from the time I leave here until I get to WDW. Maybe just the highlights? Nuremberg, Bowling Green fun stuff-, the DC Meet, then on to WDW. Or the other stuff mixed in?? Hmmm....:rolleyes:

Umm.... Magdelena--- you ARE going to guess, right??

Umm.... Magdelena--- you ARE going to guess, right??

:rolleyes1 I was counting on having until 12am US West Coast time?? That means I could still get my guess in until 9 am tomorrow morning my time?? ;)

Yes, I will post a guess. I just wanted to do it right and that means I have to invest some time. And I have been sucked into watching Gossip Girl on DVD... :rolleyes1

Of course you do!! Take all the time you need! ;) Just wanted to make sure you weren't giving up or anything!

You are right, this one will take a bit of thinking- no 50/50 here! :rotfl2:

What is Gossip Girl??

What is Gossip Girl??

An American TV series about spoiled rich kids in New York. Sounds pretty bad, but I think it has lots of irony. Kind of "Dallas" meets "Beverly Hills 90210" I would say. And unfortunately TV series on DVD are rather addicitve to me.

Thanks!! This is only the tip of the "I don't know squat about my own country's fads and goings-on right now" iceberg.:sad2: Maybe that's not such a bad thing... :upsidedow

It will be very interesting indeed to see how much has changed as we return. My father has already warned me, that "things are not what they used to be". hmmm.....

Uh-oh, I think I'm a little afraid!!! I assume picking my nose is out?

I expect picking your nose is is bad behaviour everywhere - or isn't it? :rolleyes1 I thought more of when to use fork and knife and with what hand and how to "clink" beermugs in the proper way...

Definitely when you leave your current residence. No question. You know you'd be posting updates along the way anyway, so why not make it official?

If there is a place where it is accepted I need to send my 4 yr old there. :lmao: I love the little cultural differences, like slurping in China (?) if you like the food, or in Italy if you clean your plate it means you're still hungry and the pasta mamas just keep heaping it on. My husband had to learn that one the hard way....;)

I was totally kidding you!! Of course I wouldn't pick my nose

...at a restaurant... :rolleyes1

I was actually HOPING it was something about beer mugs; although I really detest beer. Can we clink with wine??

You have to start the TR from time you shut the door on your home in Blankastan to when you finally open the door at your new home in the States!

It is sure seeming unanimous. You KNOW there will be drama as we try to get 400 extra pounds of luggage on the plane, taking ICE trains in Germany, eating a good old fashion hot dog at Hot Rods game in Bowling Green, and the list goes on and on, and on, and on....

Definitely when you leave your current residence. No question. You know you'd be posting updates along the way anyway, so why not make it official?

You are right; wherever I can, I will try to do updates. There may be some sneak posting late at night, but I"ll try!!!

Yes, like here, if you don't accept the eyeball of a sheep, it is great insult to your host!! :scared1:
