An Invasion of a "STRANGER" Kind.... NEW THREAD IS UP!! Go Thee NOW!

I am back!!

:)

I have lots of comments from the posts....so here goes.......

Regarding our promotion, woo hoo!!
Don't ask, don't tell :lmao: Mr. Potato head is happy! How funny is that!!

Double chin?!? Whatever! :rotfl2:

Now...if I have to start calling you Grandma? :rotfl:

look at you and your pressed pennies! For some reason I have never had any desire to collect those?? Not sure why. I always enjoyed putting pennies (not enough to derail any trains) on train tracks and collecting the flattened ones. And these have pictures on them!

Look at you and all of your knick knacks! :)

I know I owe you guys a description of Soldier #2.......So I am working on that!! :)

It is hard for me to believe that it has been almost a year since I introduced myself as SOLDIER #2 on the first pre-trip report thread!

I think most of you guys know me...I am Maroo. It is short for Mary - but even in real life some of my friends call me Maroo! :)

I have no kids - so I just claim my dog - Muffin.

Isn't she cute?

And this will be my EIGHTH trip to WDW since October of 2008, when I was blessed to be able to join Lauren and her family on a Make a Wish trip. (Someone may note that TWO trips have been added since I first introduced myself...and ONE of those is known by NO ONE - not even Soldier #1 yet.)

You may have seen me around the DIS…because I am a DIS addict. ::yes:: Or maybe you have not seen me around…that is ok, too. :thumbsup2

I am amazed that in May of last year I wrote that I didn't really "know" Liesa! We have now met in real life and talk on the phone or via Skype every day or so. She has truly become a dear friend.

I am getting excited about our trip! If we could just figure out WHEN we are going!

Okay, I am 10 pages behind. Running back to get caught up and will be back with comments. :surfweb:

ok. . .I am back with comments.

You definitely have to be a stealth circular filer. I have been busted many times by Miss Jordan throwing things away. I have had to nicely explain to her that Mommy has a large binder and is working on a second one filled with art and important papers and that I can't possible keep everything she every made, wrote, colored, etc. because we would need a separate house to hold it all! I too hate happy meal toys and birthday grab bag gifts toys and throw them out as soon as I can. We do goodie bags at her parties since everyone else does but I put in perishables (candy necklaces, lollipops, etc.) or things that are semi-useful like character pens, notebooks, etc.

The key to stealth "filing" is to take the trash out regularly. Luckily, we burn our trash every time it goes out (or the dogs spread it all over the place), so the evidence is neatly reduced to ashes. The downside is that my son is the main trash taker-outer. That's resulted in some nasty misfires of said stuff.

Love some of the pressed penny ideas! Ours are in those little books you can buy there.

My 3 ideas for that now are The Villians, SW and her little guys, and the rest of WS. I won't bust my butt to get them, but whatever I come across will be fun to get!

I am enjoying the shopping around WS segments. That is an ambitious goal but I think you can do it! My mom bought a cloth glasses case in China that I don't think was very expensive so that may be an idea for there.

I hadn't thought of a glasses case for the China one. They make some lovely silk things and I could certainly use that everyday!!!:thumbsup2

Love PH's kilt! I would be happy to create an ensemble for PH to wear to WDW. Just let us know if any specific themes are taken so we don't repeat.

(I posted on Mary's thread too but am so glad she is okay and her arm is not broken.)

I don't have ANYTHING planned or lined up for Animal Kingdom. Something leopard skinned?? Zebra striped? or with horns??

I am back!!

TOP is one happy guy. He is sitting here with me right now on my window sill, and in fact, is very grateful for his warm kilt!!! There is ice on the inside of my windows still!!!! :scared1:

If there was ONE lift-it job I could get, it'd be this blasted double chin. YOu know, I"m not overweight (at all- I still wear a size 4!), but I unfortunately inherited the "double chin gene" from my mother. Ah well, trips to Disney are more important than looking even remotely perfect.

We'll do Pressed Pennied together. They are fun- especially if the machine is a handcrank one.

"With a knick-knack paddy whack, give a dog a bone..." :rolleyes1:rolleyes1:rolleyes1

Isn't that amazing!!!!?? A year ago!!

I don't know what I would have done without this thread and ALL OF YOU to keep me company over the long months that we've spent together!!!

It is true. Mary is like a sister (well, maybe even better, I don't fight with mary :lmao:) and is just the perfect person to share a vacay at WDW with. (and I promise I won't have a hissy and sleep on the floor ;))

Me too, and we are getting closer to deciding- not quite there yet, but closer. :thumbsup2

Okay, Maroo..I had never seen a picture of Muffin...she is adorable!! I'm glad you back posting again, I missed you, as I'm sure others did. Now what's this about a mystery trip??? I wanna know, I wanna know!

Liesa, I'll introduce Maroo to the joys of penny pressing when we meet at DHS ;) Speaking of which..I was able to score a roll of uncirculated 1981 pennies for less than $6 including shipping on e-bay, so you may want to look into it as you get closer.

Here, Here!!! WHO is this person I don't know about??!! popcorn::

2 more trips??!!

Super! They are such a nice affordable souvie that are fun to collect. I will have to look into the pre1982 pennies a little better. It may be worth it to get them as the ones we have done PPs with before turned out pretty grungy looking.

Does anyone else recite the countries in order around World Showcase, instead of sheep, when going to sleep at night?? If so, then you know that after China, comes Germany if traveling clockwise around the Promenade.

While China puts a peaceful and contemplative mood in my soul, Germany evokes lighthearted, festive feelings in me. The background music alone makes me want to don my liederhosen and yodel a merry tune- while clanking a beer stein with my neighbor.

So, as I thought long and hard about what might be a good little something to take away from my visit to Bavaria, I couldnt' help but have a little smile plastered on my face. But, however hard I smiled, and thought, and contemplated, I couldn't come up with anything that I really have to have from the quaint little village of Frankfurt!

We have been doing the pickle ornament on our tree for years and years, even here in Blankastan. To be very honest, I doubt very highly that everyday Germans use a decorative stein to sip their stout. Correct me if I'm wrong, Magdalene, but that may just be one of those touristy things that folks think they're supposed to buy because they've been there. Kind of like a cowboy hat from San Diego. Teddy Bears are definitely O.U.T.!!! And unless I win the lottery sometime soon, a Hummel is out as well.

Soooooooo, this may the one country that I will have to just (gasp!) browse in. I really don't want to spend a long, long time browsing around, thinking on these choices, but the challenge of finding something for under $5must be met.

ANY IDEAS, Peeps???

Sorry, I only paused in Germany long enough to take some photos and meet the Colonel.

Just read your blog though. HOLY FART KNOCKING COW BATMAN! I now know to NEVER ride a train across the Asian Steppe.

I thought that tale of the epic journey would elicit such a heartfelt response!! :lmao: It is surely something I am not looking forward to having to do many more times. ;)

Liesa, I'll scope out the shop in Germany while we're there, my Mom lived there for a couple of years, so I know we'll be making a stop ;) Can't be of much help beyond that...

I was going to say get the pickle from Germany but you already have one. Do they sell mini beer steins? I know that Christmas shop has some neat souvenirs.:surfweb:

MARY::: Welcome back!! I hope you are feeling better!!!!

That'd be really great!!! Look for things that really speak to the culture, are between $3-5, can be used for everyday use, and aren't too Disneyana. :goodvibes

I think the pickles are actually around $8 anyway- beyond my price range. They may sell the minis, and if they do, you know TOP will be modelling one for us!! :thumbsup2 I may check the Christmas shoppe, to see what they have. Hmmmm.... this one is really a stumper!

Hi Liesa, I have been rather busy the past few days, but shopping in Germany finally got me posting again on your PTR... :rolleyes1

Actually, Germans really do use beer steins. Perhaps not the very heavily decorated ones, but still. My parents have a quite a few which are used especially in summer if you want to drink a beer outside on the patio: the lid is there for a real reason, to prevent any insects flying into your beer! :thumbsup2 It is still a traditional gift here in Germany (well, let's say the south of Germany, not so much in Berlin where I am at the moment). You can get an engraving on the lid for the occassion. In very traditional pubs the regulars would even have their own stein which they brought (or more likely got as a present from the other regulars for their 50th birthday or so). So if you are a bee drinker: getting a simpler stein would be a very usable souvenir from Germany! :goodvibes

We had a good look around the German shop and there were some really nice toys, I think they even had Playmobile figure which are a great hit here (but I don't think they would be the type of souvenir you are looking for...). We took pics of lots of funny t-shirts and a lederhosen Mickey. There were lots of sweets and even some real German food. And then there was the Christmas shop which had a lot of very high quality glas ornaments. But those really aren't very useable either. One thing that came into mind are the lace ornaments they had in the Christmas shop. Those are christmassy figures (angels, tree etc.) made from lace and starched so much that they are absolutely hard. These are flat, so perhaps they could be used as a bookmark???

I KNEW I could count on you, Magdelene!!! Awesome insights- so thank you so much!!

OK, now I know for sure whether steins are really used or not! So getting a mini one would actually work. :thumbsup2 But again, not sure where I'd put it, or if I"d use it. :confused3

This might be THE PERFECT thing I'm looking for!! I do read a lot, and having some German lace would certainly be authentic, and useful for everyday. GREAT suggestion!!! :yay:

I hope you're not too, too busy! I have definitely noticed you weren't posting nearly as much, and keep anxiously awaiting your and Katharina's TR to start. I do know it takes time to get photos uploaded and stuff written though. ;) Glad you're back, at least a little :)

Just a quick update to say that maroo's arm isn't broken!!! Yeah!!!

Howdy! Welcome back to the thread! We missed you! Alright, I agree with Amanda - we need to know about this super secret trip! I don't even know if I can name all of your trips. Let me think about it and get back to you.

I don't have ANYTHING planned or lined up for Animal Kingdom. Something leopard skinned?? Zebra striped? or with horns??

Okay, sign me up for an Animal Kingdom PH outfit!

Speaking of Germany (and for PA Dutch country where I live),
Happy Fastnacht Day everyone!

Hi!

I don't think I've posted here before. I'd rather think of myself as a subtle reader than lurker though. I just sounds nicer, don't you think?

When in Germany, how about an Advent calendar. They're so pretty and only about $6 if I remember correctly. Not all of the Christmas ornaments are Christmassy looking. You might be able to find one that you could hang in a window year round. Perhaps a cross or a bird? If those aren't anything you'd want, Germany has so much variety, I don't think you'll have any trouble finding something even without a plan.

Returning to my Subtle Reader Corner now! ;)

I don't suppose you can take home the Bavarian cheesecake from Biergarten as your souvie....

:goodvibes

My wife worked in York for a while and told me about this tradition. We both grew up in northwestern PA and had never heard of it.

I am so glad you think Muffin is cute. She is my baby! :) Of course, to those of you that have kids, that seems crazy...oh well! She is all I got! :)

It is not a person...but a TRIP!

You know about most of them.....just one extra that I am cooking up.

MARY::: Welcome back!! I hope you are feeling better!!!!

Thanks, Tim! :)

Yes! Sorry, I should have mentioned that last night! I swear I am going to take a picture of it and post it.

Super secret!! Still secret. NO ONE knows about it yet. I don't even have dates yet...just an idea.

Subtle reader! I like it!! :)

My husband is of German/Pennsylvania Dutch descent, but I still don't have any ideas for you in your souvenir journey. I'm sure you'll find something cool. :thumbsup2
