An Evil Volcano, Floating Cheerios, And Lots Of Tonga Toast!-May 2010 TR-UPDATE Day 2

We woke up on Thursday morning and for the most part, it was like any other morning. Mike and I woke up, got cleaned up, and then woke the kids up to get Alex ready for school. Technically, Friday was supposed to be his last day of school but since they weren’t really doing much on the last day, we decided to go ahead and leave on Thursday. So this was Alex’s last day of kindergarten. I admit it. I cried. I can’t believe he’s no longer a kindergartener! It went by too fast!!! Anyway, we all ate breakfast and then climbed into the van to take Alex to his last day of school. The kids decided to play their Leapsters while we drove (my Mom had just bought Lauren one for our trip so they were excited that they both had one). Here’s the kiddos ridding in the van:

After I watched Alex bounce into the school (It’s really cute. He walks really fast and his backpack bounces on his back), we went to Kroger and got gas for the van and checked the air in the tires. We headed home and I finished packing the overnight bag and suitcases. Thankfully Mike took off work this day so I was able to center my attention on packing while he kept Lauren entertained. After everything was packed, we started to bring everything downstairs to be loaded into the van. This is what our pile of stuff looked like:

I was so excited! Look at me!

My Mom had told me she would be here around 10:30 am so I wasn’t too stressed about leaving to pick up Alex at 12:00 pm. Well, around 10:30 she called me to tell me she would be leaving her house around 11:00. No big deal. She lives pretty close to us. At around 11:00 she calls to tell me she’s left her house and is going to get herself some lunch at a fast food place. Now I start to panic. We needed to pick up Alex at 12:00 and it takes about 15 minutes to get from our house to the school. In order to pick up Alex at 12:00, we needed to be out of the house by 11:40. We still hadn’t loaded Mom’s stuff into the van and I thought she was going to eat after she got here. I tried really hard not to freak out.

While I was trying not to freak out (I didn’t have very much success with that), Mike loaded all of our stuff in the van and then I moved it into the street. Since Mom’s car was going to be here for a week, we thought it would be a good idea to let her park her SUV in the garage.

Around 11:30 Mom showed up and I was so happy to see she ate her lunch in her SUV on the way to our house. Yay! So I pulled her SUV into the garage while Mike put her luggage in the van. Wunderbar! We double checked our packing list, checked the doors and lights, petted the kitties, and pilled into the jammed van. How jammed was it? Take a look:

We left our house at 11:42. I was a happy camper. We drove the short distance to the school, I parked the van and then jumped out to go sign Alex out of school. One thing that I made sure we did before we left the school was to have Alex go to the restroom. So I had to sign him out of school so he could leave, then I had to sign myself in so I could take him to the restroom, then I had to sign myself back out so they wouldn’t think there was still some strange lady wandering around the school.

After all that craziness, Alex and I pretty much ran to the van and then we took off for the interstate. We left his school at 12:00. Awesome! We were right on schedule. We hit the interstate about seven minutes later and then I realized I needed to go to the restroom. Leave it to my bladder to get our schedule out of whack. So I pulled off the interstate maybe five miles down from where we started and drove to a Cracker Barrel. While I went to the restroom, Mike decided to get in the drivers seat. That was fine with me. I get very sleepy when I drive so it’s usually better if he drives.

After our pit stop we continued on our way down I-75. We made our way down through Chattanooga and then we came to one of the things I dread most about our drive down to WDW. Georgia. It’s a long, long state. We’re in it for what seems forever. No offense to any Georgia residents but y’all have a long state. I mean, you could go from the top to the bottom of Tennessee in a couple of hours.

At least Alex and Lauren kept themselves occupied during our long drive. Between their Leapsters and the DVD player, they did pretty good. They really liked wearing the headphones while watching a Scooby Doo movie. Only problem was that Lauren kept talking really loud when she wore them. Mom and I listened to choir music we were trying to learn for an upcoming Washington DC trip (we left the day after we got back from Disney). And poor Mike drove most of the way. I took over at some point but it wasn’t for more than a couple of hours.

We crossed the border into Georgia and stopped at the welcome center. Surprisingly the kids remembered stopping here last year. We all took restroom breaks and walked around for a little bit. We arrived there at 1:50 and left at 1:57.

Continued in next post...

After what seemed like a good while, we arrived at the outskirts of Atlanta. And here’s the other part of the drive that I am not a big fan of. Atlanta traffic. Both Mike and I cringe when we think about driving through it. Thankfully Mike was the one driving. We drove through there between 3:00 and 3:30. Here’s what the Atlanta traffic looked like on this trip:

For Atlanta, there wasn’t much traffic.

We had decided that we wanted to eat dinner at a Cracker Barrel on our way down so before we left home, we researched where they were located on I-75. We ended up stopping at exit 218 to get dinner. It was around 4:00 at this point. I love me some Cracker Barrel y’all! I remember being very hungry so I got the Old Timer’s breakfast. Mom got the same as me, Mike got the chicken fried chicken, Lauren got chicken tenders, and Alex got grilled cheese (his favorite food in the whole world). I didn’t take any pictures of the food but I think this is the only meal I don’t have a picture of. We had a really great server who even got Lauren to talk to him (she can be kind of shy around people she doesn’t know).

After another restroom break, we headed back on the road. We left around 5:00 so it didn’t take too long to eat. We did eventually stop for gas in Tifton, GA but that was the last stop we made in the long state of Georgia.

After what seemed like an eternity, we crossed over from Georgia into Florida. I think I actually sang the Hallelujah Chorus. We arrived at the Florida Welcome center around 8:00. It gave us an opportunity to stretch our legs and visit the restrooms. We were hoping to have some yummy Florida orange juice but we were disappointed to learn that it had closed hours before. Oh well! Maybe next trip.

We got back on the interstate and drove for a little over an hour to our destination for the night, Gainesville, FL. Home to the Florida Gators. Knoxville, home to the Tennessee Volunteers. We don’t usually get along but I was tired, they have a nice hotel, and it’s not far from WDW. So for one night out of the year, I stay in enemy territory. We arrived at the Red Roof Inn at around 9:15. By this point, I had heard “Are we there yet” 10 times. We had hoped that Mom would have an adjoining room and I was pretty disappointed when I found out that not only did we not have adjoining rooms, we were on opposite ends of the hallway. We had stayed here last trip and were happy with it but I’m thinking we may look for something else. Hopefully something with a continental breakfast.

After we got into our room, Mike went down to the van and got our overnight bag and the food bag that had our doughnuts. Sorry folks. I didn’t take any pictures of the room that night. I was too tired and all I wanted to do was get the kiddos into their pajamas and into bed so we could wake up early to head to WDW. We had a date with Mickey Mouse and his friends at Chef Mickey’s the next morning.

What will happen on our first day at WDW? Will our room be ready when we check-in? Will we get adjoining rooms at the Poly? Can we make it to Chef Mickey’s for our ADR? Will Lauren actually get her picture made with a character instead of crying and hiding from them?

Coming Up: Friday May 21st - Day 1 - Part 1-6

So there you have it. The basics. Up next, our travel day. Will we be able to fit everything in the van? Will we make it down without any traffic problems in Atlanta? And how many times did I hear “Are we there yet?” (It was a lot y’all)

:scared1: What?! Travel problems in Atlanta? No way, we are so cool here.....let everyone go in front of us and hardly ever have a wreck on a major highway that causes every other interstate to back up...nope, not us, not ever! :rolleyes1

Great Trip report. I can't wait to read the rest. You guys seem like a really fun family!

I'm in. I am new to all this, usually a lurker but I LOVE your TR so far! Can't wait for the next installment.

Yay for the start of the trip! I know what you mean about Atlanta traffic. I cannot stand going through. I am on my way to Atlanta in a few minutes for a Braves game and am not looking forward to seeing a sight very similar to your pictures.

Joining in!! Loooooove the report so far! You got off easy with 5 pounds! I gained 7 lbs on our trip and of course it took me twice the time to lose it than gain it! I'm nervous for this fall.. we're doing 2 weeks at Food & Wine LOL!

Great update. You seem just as anxious as I am about sticking to that scheduled time of departure.

YAY for Cracker Barrel. I get the Old Timer's as well. So YUMMY!!!!!!

I laughed at you dreading Atlanta traffic. We dread passing through Mobile at times. If you hit it at the wrong time, you can end up sitting at that tunnel FOREVER.

Looking forward to seeing your next update.

:lmao: When we went down to Disney in 2007 we hit Atlanta at 4:00 on a Friday and there had been a bad storm so there were a lot of power outages. It took us FOREVER to get through the city. After that experience we get a little nervous about going through Atlanta.

Loving this so far! Anxious to read more - I actually feel like I'm on the trip with you and I just want the car to go faster! :)

Have fun at the game! I actually have never been to a Braves game. I bet it's fun though!

:welcome: disneygirl! I can relate to the taking twice as long to losing the weight. I lost about 20 pounds and then gained it back again. I'm in the process of trying to lose it again and it is MUCH harder this time.

2 WEEKS!!! I would be in heaven!

Thanks Megan! We really wanted to leave at a certain time because of Atlanta traffic. Even just 15 minutes can make a difference. I didn't realize Mobile traffic could be so bad. I guess most people that drive have to deal with at least one bad traffice area.

Getting there is half the fun isn't it! Great updates! I love road trips...but it would take us 3 or 4 days to drive to WDW so that will never happen....and I hate to fly, but at least I'm there in 4 and a half hours.

Subscribing - going to the Poly for the 1st time in August! Love your report so far!
