We woke up on Thursday morning and for the most part, it was like any other morning. Mike and I woke up, got cleaned up, and then woke the kids up to get Alex ready for school. Technically, Friday was supposed to be his last day of school but since they werent really doing much on the last day, we decided to go ahead and leave on Thursday. So this was Alexs last day of kindergarten. I admit it. I cried. I cant believe hes no longer a kindergartener! It went by too fast!!! Anyway, we all ate breakfast and then climbed into the van to take Alex to his last day of school. The kids decided to play their Leapsters while we drove (my Mom had just bought Lauren one for our trip so they were excited that they both had one). Heres the kiddos ridding in the van:
After I watched Alex bounce into the school (Its really cute. He walks really fast and his backpack bounces on his back), we went to Kroger and got gas for the van and checked the air in the tires. We headed home and I finished packing the overnight bag and suitcases. Thankfully Mike took off work this day so I was able to center my attention on packing while he kept Lauren entertained. After everything was packed, we started to bring everything downstairs to be loaded into the van. This is what our pile of stuff looked like:
I was so excited! Look at me!
My Mom had told me she would be here around 10:30 am so I wasnt too stressed about leaving to pick up Alex at 12:00 pm. Well, around 10:30 she called me to tell me she would be leaving her house around 11:00. No big deal. She lives pretty close to us. At around 11:00 she calls to tell me shes left her house and is going to get herself some lunch at a fast food place. Now I start to panic. We needed to pick up Alex at 12:00 and it takes about 15 minutes to get from our house to the school. In order to pick up Alex at 12:00, we needed to be out of the house by 11:40. We still hadnt loaded Moms stuff into the van and I thought she was going to eat after she got here. I tried really hard not to freak out.
While I was trying not to freak out (I didnt have very much success with that), Mike loaded all of our stuff in the van and then I moved it into the street. Since Moms car was going to be here for a week, we thought it would be a good idea to let her park her SUV in the garage.
Around 11:30 Mom showed up and I was so happy to see she ate her lunch in her SUV on the way to our house. Yay! So I pulled her SUV into the garage while Mike put her luggage in the van. Wunderbar! We double checked our packing list, checked the doors and lights, petted the kitties, and pilled into the jammed van. How jammed was it? Take a look:
We left our house at 11:42. I was a happy camper. We drove the short distance to the school, I parked the van and then jumped out to go sign Alex out of school. One thing that I made sure we did before we left the school was to have Alex go to the restroom. So I had to sign him out of school so he could leave, then I had to sign myself in so I could take him to the restroom, then I had to sign myself back out so they wouldnt think there was still some strange lady wandering around the school.
After all that craziness, Alex and I pretty much ran to the van and then we took off for the interstate. We left his school at 12:00. Awesome! We were right on schedule. We hit the interstate about seven minutes later and then I realized I needed to go to the restroom. Leave it to my bladder to get our schedule out of whack. So I pulled off the interstate maybe five miles down from where we started and drove to a Cracker Barrel. While I went to the restroom, Mike decided to get in the drivers seat. That was fine with me. I get very sleepy when I drive so its usually better if he drives.
After our pit stop we continued on our way down I-75. We made our way down through Chattanooga and then we came to one of the things I dread most about our drive down to WDW. Georgia. Its a long, long state. Were in it for what seems forever. No offense to any Georgia residents but yall have a long state. I mean, you could go from the top to the bottom of Tennessee in a couple of hours.
At least Alex and Lauren kept themselves occupied during our long drive. Between their Leapsters and the DVD player, they did pretty good. They really liked wearing the headphones while watching a Scooby Doo movie. Only problem was that Lauren kept talking really loud when she wore them. Mom and I listened to choir music we were trying to learn for an upcoming Washington DC trip (we left the day after we got back from Disney). And poor Mike drove most of the way. I took over at some point but it wasnt for more than a couple of hours.
We crossed the border into Georgia and stopped at the welcome center. Surprisingly the kids remembered stopping here last year. We all took restroom breaks and walked around for a little bit. We arrived there at 1:50 and left at 1:57.
