An email i recieved!

This entire post is why we are in trouble. If he got $18K back, that means he paid in a lot more than $18,000. EIC doesn't apply. Life isn't a bell-curve. Those that are smarter and work harder throughout their life usually make more money than the opposite. How do you know if he is paying his quarterlies? I can tell you he probably has been, because the IRS will come down HARD if you don't. There's also something called the AMT which hits the self-employed in the tail also. When somebody gets a BIG tax return it's because the Government took TOO MUCH OF THEIR MONEY. People who believe that taxes are the governments money are crazy. It's my money and the government is taking it away. If this guy is cheating on his taxes, he'll eventually get tagged, but to use a story like this to support raising taxes is like taking away all entitlement programs because one person abused the system.

Now, with this election we have a promise to tax more and GIVE it to people who pay nothing. That's not the American Dream. It's an American Nightmare!:scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

I know because the IRS unopened mail was piled high in a box when I helped clean out his office. I know because someone from the IRS kept calling my friend. I know because my friend's attorney has been investigating his business. Unfortunately, the couple are not in a criminal trial, but are in divorce court, so it's doubtful he'll get caught (cash leaves no tracks) unless he gets audited.

Looks correct Linda. (The Gov kind of screws singles don't they)

The rich made out like bandits from the Div/Cap Gains tax cuts.

Oh for heavens sake a few extra hundred bucks at tax time doesn't "level the playing field" If you're really making $250,000 or more a year you can rest comfortably in your superiority. You'll always have more, the better cars, the better health insurance, better vacations, and pretty much everything.

All we're trying to do is make sure some of the working poor have a little extra for the basics of life. The things you take for granted - things like being able to get the meds they need, getting a tooth fixed when it cracks, replace a fridge when it dies.

Maybe if you stopped looking at it as your life being diminished, and look at it as helping those that aren't as blessed as you; you might see that it's actually the decent thing to do.

You completely missed the point.

And I just love when the "guilt card" is played. I just happen to believe that I give the government enough of my money as do I feel people who make a gazillion dollars pay enough too. I also believe that the government has to do a much much better job with the money they already get before they start asking... ooops, TAKING more. If that makes me a cold callous person, oh well. So be it. Why is it that the government never (or hardly ever) gets called out for "not doing the decent thing" but people who'd like to keep as much of the money they make as possible is?? It's bizarre.

And besides, you have no idea (other than perceived stereotypes of Republican/Conservatives) what I do (or don't) to do "a decent thing" for others less fortunate than I.

But again, the "guilt card" almost always works. Not with me.

May I ask where the $$ to move is going to come from to find this great "area" of job opportunity? And I have no mortgage to be foreclosed on, we took care of that ASAP. Totally paid off. Yes, I have a $6,00 credit card balance from medical bills from an unplanned pregnancy (yes, I was on birth control so blame God for that little mishap), we have health insurance, pay 95% of al bills on time and in full every month. DH and I have 2 cars, both of them used but reliable paid off with no car payment. Never drink Starbucks, very rarely eat out, no LCD TV's here (a $110 bought at WalMart with $$ I earned from a 2nd job), no cable, dial up Internet (only because I have to have it for school and extra part time work typing term papers occasionally), I shop at the Goodwill, consignment stores, or clearance racks only, use coupons and haven't had a haircut in a year. I've cut back as much as possible. But I have to struggle to buy groceries every month. If you've been able to move, go to school and make a better life for yourself to where you can be financially stable then good for you. But like many things, moving, getting a college education, letting your home get foreclosed is not always as clear as black and white.

When you're doing all you can to get by AND improve your life to be more financially stable what then??? Not buy groceries...and I'm sorry you can move to ALaska for a better job opportunity but there's no guarantee that if you save up the $$ to make the move that that job will last. And then what...you're away from family and friends and in a worse situation than before. I'm sorry but it's not always so easy to impove your life or yourself. And whay worked for you doesn't or won't necessarily work for everyone. Maybe we'll have to agree to disagree because I'm proud of the fact that I do work, am trying to make a better life for my family and that some people still dont' "get it". It's not easy, it's hard as H***, and I am trying my best to be in "your" shoes but until then I'll be voting for Obama and glad that I'm getting a little help. Trust me, I'd rather have the $250,00+ income and taxes to complain about. (Not trying to be snarky toward anyone)

Oh, and remember these people who are helping you children achieve their dreams or financial freedom (teacher) are some of these "working class" who will benefit from these tax cuts. As will the policemen who keep you safe, the fireman, the person who prepares your food at your favorite restaurant, the machanic who fixes your car, and all those other people who do all the things that you don't need a college education for. Do you know how many people at the fast food restaurant I work with that have a college education ? There are 3 but because of the economy can't find work in their field.

And the WDW trip in my ticker....isn't going to happen due to the economy right now. DH and I are putting it toward the previously mentioned cc bill and putting it toward my college tuition. Before anyone decides to point out that I'm a hypocrite. Just haven't taken it down yet..maybe I can pull a rabbit out of the hat and salvage it.

No Charade I didn't miss the point at all. You don't like paying more in taxes then someone else - even someone that already has less then you. And you really don't like the fact that some of your tax dollars go towards helping those same people with services and maybe even some cash.

An no, you're not the only person who thinks that the government is often wasteful with our money. I just think it's funny that in a 6 page thread it's the first time you raise wastefulness as a reason not to pay more taxes. Up till now you've been all about how "unfair" it is.

Do I think that our government needs to be better stewards of our money? Of course - and getting out of Iraq is a great place to start. I just don't happen to think that a little kid in Kalamazoo should die from an infected tooth because his mom works a minimum wage job and can't afford health insurance.

I have no "perceived notions" about what decent things you do for those less fortunate. (Actually one of the more generous people I know is a staunch Bush loving Republican.) But the issue isn't what you may or may not chose to give. Because as kind as generous as those acts may be, they aren't enough to break the cycle of working poor in this country. That's not going to change until our government has programs in place to guarantee that the working poor have access to basics like health care and a decent education.
