An Airtran Question...does this mean the flight is full?

We are flying Airtran for the first time on December 23 (from Buffalo, NY).

When I check the Airtran website and run our date, our flight now shows a "---" instead of the flight price (this is under "Lowest Coach"...."Business Class" still shows a price). Does this mean the flight is now full, business class excepted?

If I check to see the seating chart, it still shows a ton of "empty" seats, but I know that not everyone pays for seat assignments so perhaps that is why so many still show as available.

The reason why I am asking is I have been checking every day to ensure we get a credit if flight prices decline (which they did once since purchasing back in July :yay: snagging me an equivalent value of one free checked bag per person). If its full, then I will redirect my obsessive-compulsive price checking to my return flight home via Jetblue and my seemingly impossible search for a reasonably priced rental car :rolleyes1 .

Just took a look and looks like only "business class" available on that nonstop flight.

As my airline pilot sister reminds me, seat maps are not a good indicator of whether a flight actually has seats or not, since not all seats get selected when sold. Most likely your flight is full.

Hope you find a good car rental rate. Definitely check every day, look at Mousesavers, etc. If things don't get better, you might consider priceline as a last minute option. My other sister did that on her last trip, and got a great rate. They only use the major companies--she got Avis for her rental.

When seat prices are "--" out usually that means they are no longer selling that level of seating. It could be that it may be at the level of overbooking and have stopped taking purchases for regular seating. Not everyone chooses their seats, so the seating display may not be totally accurate.

Our flight on Dec 3rd has like 5 people on it, so I keep hoping they cancel it and we can jump on an earlier flight. Thinking I had to work that day, I booked the late flight and now that has changed.

How does this work with Airtran? On their website it says any changes require a $75 fee. Is this just for changing flights? Will they credit money back on any flight if the fare goes down? Sorry if the answers seem obvious but I haven't flown in years (and years!)

Thanks!

I think Airtran used to let you change to a different flight going to the same place on the same day you were traveling. So if the earlier flight has seats you can get put on it the day of the flight. I know I did this one year in Atlanta after a trade show.

They won't charge you the $75 change fee. They will give you a credit for the amount the flight went down. You can use the credit to pay for checked bags, or to pay for a seat upgrade. Or hold it and use it if you plan to purchase another ticket in the near future.

Thank you everyone for the great information! :thumbsup2

I have been able to secure some pretty fantastic prices on rentals on our last two trips, but this year just seems so much harder. I know at least a portion of the problem is that I'm travelling during the super-busy and high-demand Christmas week. And I also know its somewhat too early for the great deals to be popping up, as our travel date is still 8 weeks away. But I can't help but worry that because its Christmas week, I will be stuck with a much higher rental cost than we have faced before. Can you tell I'm not a very patient person? :rotfl:

Yup, what maxiesmom said :).

It was easy-peasy to get the credit. One quick phone call (less than 10 minutes start to finish) and we have $60 in credits to use, which wonderfully translates into 3 checked bags on departure day (exactly the amount we will have). No $75 change fees applied. And the credit is showing when I check our reservation online, so I was able to print "proof" that the credit is there in case I encounter any issues at the airport. My Type A personality kind of worries about stuff like that :rolleyes1 .... so it made me feel better to know that I have something in writing showing the credit was applied.

I did not know this about Airtran. And here I've been watching prices like a hawk waiting to pounce at the right price moment. Is this exclusive to Airtran or all airlines? What exactly is the $75 fee for?

The change ticket fee is a way for airlines to make more money. For most airlines, the change ticket fee for a domestic flight is $150 per ticket.

Maybe changing to a different flight on the same day? Or to a flight on a different day? But I am just guessing.
