Hello all!

This is my first post here in quite a while -- but I know only this group will know the answer I need!

We are long-time DVC members -- about 10 years? We own about 125 points at SSR and totally love it. Through the years, we have stayed at SSR and nearly every other resort! Also cruised. It has all been great.

Now we are ready to add on. I was sure we would definitely buy direct as we trade out into the Disney Collection fairly often. This happens with some regularity when we visit Disneyland as the number of villas at Grand Californian is small -- so we frequently are offered Disneyland hotel instead, which works great for us. We go there a few times each year - usually only for a night or two -- but also usually on short notice. So we need to retain some right to use the Disney collection.

But if we buy our add-on through resale, how would that work? Do we retain those trading into the Disney collection rights on our original contract? Even though our new resale contract wouldn't have those rights? So confused!

Also trying to sort out where to buy. We have been very happy with those SSR points. So if we buy direct, we will buy SSR to say money (only $99/point direct). But if we buy resale, we would go for Grand Californian or BLT (since we love those places but they are too pricey direct).

Okay folks. Let me have it! Please tell me what I am doing wrong! Preferably, before I do it!! :lmao:

Thanks in advance!!

Rights remain with each contract separately, that includes UY, booking window, and trading out.

Owning at VGC will not change your ability to book there last minute. If you buy there and use those for 11 month planned trips, you could trade out your SSR pts for last minute trips to DL.

Thank you. That reaffirms my initial thinking.

The only concern would be if for some reason Disney later decided to limit or disallow the right to trade into the Disney collection. But given that they are currently earning a premium selling that right to new direct buyers (as a way to pull them out of the resale market), it seems unlikely that they might make that choice in the immediate future.

At least I hope that's a fair assumption. :confused3 Obviously, nothing is guaranteed.

Edited to add: Yep, the fact that we almost never plan a vacation more than 7 months out has definitely impacted how and where I buy points.

Based on your vacation habits it looks like a SSR contract direct if you need the points to trade out or resale if you don't.

Thanks, Bill. I think that's right. And since, as I said, we sometimes like to travel on short notice, I think we are going to buy direct. That way, when we want to do a short notice trip to Disneyland, we will have the option of staying at Disneyland hotel or Paradise Pier when VGC is full (although the waitlist has worked amazingly well for us). Through the years, I feel we will use that.

Would be a very different story if we vacationed primarily in Florida.
