Amy's "BUT I'M NOT A RUNNER" Journal

Hi Amy,

Good for you for getting up and running....That is great!!!!

Hope you are having a great day! Keep up the good work :)

Hi Amy,

Way to go getting your run in this morning! Great job! :yay: Keep up the good work! :cheer2:

Hope you have a wonderful weekend! :sunny:

6am? Holy smokes...I can't do anything at 6am except roll myself into the shower! Way to go..that shows a LOT of determination and dedication on your part.

Hey lady...

I don't think an 11mpm is what I would consider even close to SLOW!! You're doing awesome!! Is that a 35 minute straight run?

Congrats on getting up early to run, since your schedule won't allow any other time. I do some of my best thinking early in the am! Sounds like you were finishing up just as I was getting started at 6:40!! I really like that there aren't many cars out, and only a handful of teenagers waiting for their busses.

I had a very paranoid run this morning...which I never had before. I kept checking behind me. I don't know what that was about...and maybe that had something to do with my fast time :rotfl: . Very weird feeling. Do you carry anything like pepper spray with you when you run?? I might go invest in some.

Way to go with the workouts. :cool1: 35 minutes of jogging and kickboxing sound tough to me. You've got to be in great shape to handle all that exercisin'!

Sunday, April 30th

Yesterday was my rest day and I really needed it! These long weeks of exercising have me sore and limping around the house like an old lady by Friday night. There are definitely moments when I question my sanity, and these old bones ability to keep me going. But still I push on because I've seen so much change in three short months. Physically, my body looks and feels different. My legs are stronger and leaner, my arms are stronger and leaner, my heart rate is significantly better and my endurance has clearly increased. Unfortunately, I also hobble around after my runs due to hip tenderness, pain and stiffness. I plan on visiting a Physical Therapist to see if we can figure why I am getting these pains after my runs. I stretch like crazy and own the best running shoes I could find. :confused3 My biggest fear is that they will tell me I have to stop running! But I am confident that won't be the case. It's not debilitating, and it seems like a form of bursitis or tendonitis. There might be therapies for me that will work. Regardless, I'm pushing on until I'm told otherwise. Me and my best friend Ibuprofin!

Today was a big day for me. My long run of the week has now moved to 5 miles. I haven't run five miles in over 20 years...since my H.S. days when my evil Field Hockey coach made us run 5 miles wearing cleats (yes, shin splints hurt a bunch) and carrying a wooden field hockey stick, all the while yelling "JONES, YOU ARE TOO SLOW. GET MOVING!!!" Gee, I wonder why I always imagined myself to not be a runner. Hmmmm....let's all ponder that for a moment. I did it for four years, always finished last and always got yelled at. Ahhhh...the good old days.

Anyway, back to this decade. It was empowering to finish a 5 mile run. My DH drove me to the drop off point. My mission was to run home from there...his job was to come out looking for me if I didn't return in 1 hr and 10 minutes. The good news is that I didn't need the search party. :yay: But it turns out it was a much more difficult task than first imagined. I mapped the run on the online gps system. It looked both scenic and manageable. Well, it was definitely scenic.....but very challenging. Here is what the run looked like.....

Mile 1 - 3 up hill....all up hill.....no downhill. JUST UP HILL. And Scott....the VERY BFH gave me the finger the whole time :rotfl2: . Oh, and just to make it more fun, over half of it was on a dirt, rocky trail through the woods. And before you ask.....the answer is BECAUSE I'M INSANE, THAT'S WHY! :teeth:

Mile 3-4 was level. THANK THE GOD'S OF PAVED STREETS AND FLAT ROAD SURFACE!

Mile 4-5 finally arrived back into my neighborhood. I still had one killer hill to ascend...but it was the last mile friends. And I couldn't wait to get home!!

So for those counting, that makes approximately 3.5 miles up hill. :bitelip:

Now just to make things more interesting, I brought along my hydration pack to carry my cell phone and fluid. I filled the bottle with gatorade. The gatorade gave me HORRIBLE stomach pains. I now despise gatorade and learned what NOT to bring with me on runs anymore.

The run wasn't fast....but I survived. And on some runs....that is what we are most thankful for! :woohoo: I ran an 11:39 mpm. That's pretty good considering I walked more than typical, stopped due to stomach pains a few times and well, ran up hill most of it LOL! So I can't be too hard on myself.

If you've made it this far....THANKS!!! You guys are the best. Next week is another 5 miler. I'm not sure I'll do this route again....unless I do it in reverse!!! :rotfl:

Wow! Congrats on the 5k!
You're doing AWESOME!

Hope you have a great week this week!

Amy - I have the same problem with Gatorade.....I no longer use normal Gatorade but have started using Propel, I like it a lot it gives me a little bit of sweetness but isn't plain water - maybe you might want to try something like that? :confused3

Great job on your run! :goodvibes

5 MILES!!!! Holy cow, lady!!! You are my hero :worship: !!!!!

Awesome, awesome job! Keep up the GREAT work!

And, sorry you have such a horrible memory of running in HS....but look at how you've overcome!!!

Wow Amy! :thumbsup2

Congratulations on your 5 mile run! You are doing a wonderful job! :cheer2: Keep up the good work! :cool1:

Have a fantastic Monday! :sunny:

Good Morning,

Wow.... 5 miles....you go girl!!!

Sorry to hear that you had such bad stomach craps.....At least you know not to take Gatorade with you any more...

keep up the awesome work!!! You are doing a great job.

Happy Monday :)

WAY TO GO!! Great job Amy!!! Can't believe you are trail running up mountains already!! :rotfl2: Didn't anyone tell you that the WDW marathon is FLAT?? :rotfl2: Anyway, you did such a great job...I'm very proud of you!! Way to shrug off the 'hill finger' (hmm too close to Hilfiger) and kick it in the butt! :thumbsup2 Looks like you'll have to leave the Gatorade at home and try something diffferent....I don't have any suggestions yet as I haven't taken liquids on my runs but there are so many sport drinks out there now that I'm sure there is a lighter alternative.

Keep up the great work...you are really motivating and driving me to becoming a better runner...thanks!

I know this is probably the DUMBEST question ever...but why not bring water? :confused3

Definitely not a dumb question at all Kim! I could bring water with me on the shorter runs....probably up to 7 miles or so. But once I get into the longer distances, water isn't recommended because we need to replace salt and sugars lost through running for long periods of time. My goal of bringing non-water (and how I was CRAVING real water on this run LOL) is to find out what my system can handle. Apparently the stomach pains are very common in runners until one finds the correct balance of what to eat before the run and how to fuel during the run. I will try a different drink next time...perhaps propel fitness water. I could also bring water and fuel up with some energy snack such as gu, fitness jelly beans, etc. They all contain the same types of ingredients as power-ade and gatorade but in a chewable form and should be taken with water. Each Sunday is a long run, and another opportunity to learn what works for me. So I'll be experimenting until I feel 100% during the run and energized!

Great question....and who knows....if you decide to run the marathon with me you'll already know about fueling ;).

Hi Amy,

You learn something new everyday. I had no idea that the longer you run, that you needed something other than water. That is good to know. Thanks for that!!!

You are doing a great job...keep up the good work!!!

Happy Tuesday!

Thanks again to those who faithfully take the time to read my ramblings and post support. You guys really keep me going and I so deeply appreciate it! :grouphug:

This week has been crazy busy! But I'm managing to get my workouts in all the same :).

Monday: 60 minutes kickboxing. The class was sooo hard....the instructor called it an "awesome sweat". Meaning there were puddles next to all of us at the end of class LOL! We worked hard, but it was so great b/c it really loosened up my legs after the 5 Miler on Sunday!

Tuesday: Due to very limited time I had to cut my run short. I was supposed to do 35 minutes but had to keep it below 30. I managed to run 2.8 miles at a 10:03 mpm average. It was a good run and felt pretty great! The shorter runs don't take as much a toll on my body (thankfully). So the hips are much less sore today! :goodvibes

Wednesday: 60 minutes kickboxing. Another great class....which included 90 push-ups and lots of HIGH intensity cardio. It was good....and I'm still feeling okay! We did a bunch of one legged, jumping kicks which are tough. I just hope my calves and ankles are up for the 35 minute run tomorrow! So far I feel okay....but I am pretty sure I'll be sore somewhere tomorrow ;).

I was thinking about ordering a Garmin but now I'm not sure :confused3 . I wonder if I'll get the GPS signal since most of my runs are in wooded areas? Hmmmm....I have to ponder that. Does anyone have any recommendations of other pedometers that they like? THANKS!

Never say never, right? :thumbsup2 Thanks for the explanation. I had no idea.

You really are my workout hero! :yay: Do you just fall into bed and go into a coma at night? I am tired and don't workout nearly as much as you!!!

We finally have a definitely Atlantic City DIS meet scheduled for 5/13...any chance you can sneak down & meet us???? :rolleyes1

Kim

I would LOVE to go to AC on the 13th. Thanks so much for thinking of me! But.....I have an all-day girl scout event. I am a leader for both DD's troops and my little ones (The Daisies) have their special day at camp. So, unfortunately, AC is out for me this time!

I will be down at LBI for two weeks in July. How far are you from LBI? I wonder if we could get together to run one day....and maybe go out afterwards? Let me know if that is close enough for a day-trip!!
