I hate to call it a diet because it isn't a diet in the normal sense of the word, but just a way of eating period. Anyone here that avoids eating any type of grain (except corn) and vegetables grown under ground (i.e potatoes)?

My doctor is thinking I may be insulin resistant and has suggested trying to avoid foods with high amylose starch content. That pretty much means no grains, like wheat, bran, oats, etc.

I stopped at the store this evening to take a look around and see what I could find and man is it expensive. :scared1: I told my DH that it was no wonder people loose weight eating like this because they can't afford to buy enough food. :lmao: I was just kidding, but seriously, it is expensive.

I would love to hear from any Disers that avoid these types of foods and learn from your experience.

I'm insulin resistant and I very rarely eat potatoes, corn products, rice, pasta or bread. It hasn't been hard to eat this way, once I got used to it. I substitute beans, about 1/4 to 1/2 cup and I eat a lot of other veggies, like green beans, cabbage, broccoli, turnip greens, and squashes. I limit fruit to once a day because it reallly drives up my blood sugar otherwise. It hasn't been too awfull expensive. I don't buy pre-packaged food, ever. Frozen foods are just as good for you as fresh, btw. I try to buy fresh in season only. Otherwise, it *does* cost a lot.

For the most part, I just eat fruit/veggies and proteins. I don't eat wheat/potatoes/rice or other "starchy" type foods though I do occasionally drink beer (not sure if that counts???)

I am insulin resistant as well and I don't stay away from grains, but I have cut back and watch the grains that I do eat, for example instead of white rice I eat brown rice. One they that really helped me was making sure that I was always eating a protein whenever I ate a carb. There is a book called the Insulin Resitant Diet that helps explain it. I really don't look at it as a diet, but more of a change in the way I am eating.

Thanks for the info everyone. I think the hardest thing for me will be not eating sandwiches. LOL And I agree that this isn't a diet per say but just a way of eating and staying healthy.
The thing that I am most grateful for is I don't have to eat like this because of an allergy. If I have some grain I'm not going to be sick from it.
