Amtrak 50% off Promotion

Amtrak will launch a new 50% off promotion effective August 1. Purchase the best available adult fare and recieve 50% off a second adult rail fare. This particular special will only be available through TravelSavers travel agents.

There are a few blackout dates (around labor Day only). The special is good for purchase (3 days advance reservation required) until August 31st, for travel through the end of October, and it is NOT refundable if your plans change. Auto-Train does appear to be included in this promotion (some trains, including Acela and some California services, are not).

I'm really not familiar with this "Travel Savers" program either. I assume the company cherylp3 found, http://www.travelsavers.com, is the right one, but I can't say for sure (sorry). This promotion sort of surprised me. I was expecting something on Amtrak's website, but this promotion is not found there either, nor have I seen any "advertising" (so far). It seems to be exclusively a travel agent special.

It loooks like you can find a Travel Savers agent by entering your address & info on the site listed above. Three agencies showed up for my area, but I've still not found any indication of this special from Travel Savers itself. Odd.

The special is a discount off the Rail fare price, meaning you pay standard rates for a vehicle on Auto-Train or first-class (sleeper) accomodations anywhere (and also for the first full adult fare, of course). You still save money on sleepers, because that fare is the total of the rail fare (which here is discounted) and the regular-price accomodations charge.

Thanks for the info. We have tickets via rail sale, and it probably wouldn't be worth the cancellation fee to change reservations now. We'd like to get a sleeper-- never had one before we've always gone coach-- maybe we'll just try to upgrade at the station. The train is usually pretty empty when we go.
