I am currently booked on the Aug 8th 11nt cruise with Amsterdam scheduled for day 10. Does anyone know how the news of Amsterdam closing off to cruise ships will impact these plans?

Every report I’ve read said it’s not happening any time soon. It’s very evident they don’t want us there, however. I kind of wish we had a different port stop now.

Sounds like they also want to start limiting or eliminating river cruises as well.

Whether the new policies will indeed be implemented remains a question. Moving the terminal was first brought up in 2016, but little else has happened besides limiting the number of calls from 300 to 190.

Relocating the cruise terminal involves much more than just the Amsterdam City Council deciding on a motion. The entire process would need to be discussed with local and national stakeholders:

Alderman Hester van Buren told the Dutch newspaper NRC: “I’m not saying: the terminal will never be moved or scaled down. We think a healthy living environment is very important, but we cannot decide this unilaterally in Amsterdam.”

While the council has the power to enact this policy locally due to the Port Authority’s ownership by the municipality, the motion needs to be translated into law or regulation, which can be a lengthy process.

It is not really a Disney cruise that is an issue. It is more about huge British cruise ships on the more party-focused cruiselines. There are a lot of weekend getaways from the UK, with only one stop, which is Amsterdam. Sometimes they have an overnight stay in Amsterdam.

With IJmuiden having a cruise port since 2014, I think they will encourage cruiselines to dock there, otherwise Rotterdam.

We were in Amsterdam 3 1/2 weeks ago starting a river cruise. There's a lot of money at stake here, a whole lot. Lots of bars, restaurants, shops, etc make a living off tourists. I expect they'll be heard from pretty quickly.

Pre-covid, Amsterdam received about 22 million guests in 2019. Only 3% (700k) of them were cruise guests. Not sure but this should include both ocean & river cruise guests.

So, yes tourist attractions etc. might feel it a little, but not a lot. It's only a small thing the city can do to limit tourism, but it's probably relatively easy to do.

Moving the red light district to a different part of town outside the city center is probably more effective to get rid of the 'wrong' tourist. But that plan is already taking years.

The cruise ships not being there won't make a dent.
