Since you are from Amish Country, I was wondering if you know how it is that we see Amish down at Disney. How do they get there ? Especially in light of the fact that this photo is the maiden voyage. Or, am I seeing Menonites?

Probably Menonites. Menonites will travel and do things, and they are ok with things like Electricity and CIVILIZATION, the Amish on the other hand, they stay within their own society. They try to stay away from Modern America and many believe it to be wrong to be so lavish. Do you KNOW what it is like to have to drive 10 mile an hour because a HORSE AND BUGGY is at the head of the line?

It's weird. My DFi is from Amish Country (grew up in PA) and Amish out there have water and electric in their BARNS, but not their homes. Their cows get modern convienences but the people don't?

What gives?

You know sometimes I marvel at my own stupidity. Those are not the flight attendents, those are the guys who load the plane and direct it for take off either that or they are the air traffic controlers. They have just opened the gate to allow the "air buggy" to proceed and the one at the end looking to the right is the controller, making sure that no other buggies collide and ruin the madien voyage.

REally I really need to get to work. Really! I must go.

I live in Lancaster, PA. Most of the Amish here have running water and appliances that work in their homes. They are just hooked up via other means. Not electricity. The Amish homes I've been in have bathtubs, toilets, etc. No telephones in the actual homes, but many have phones on their farms, but they are used for business and not for calling their friends obviously.

The Amish will ride in cars. They usually have a friend (usually Mennonite) drive them to where they are going. We had a neighborhood garage sale last week and just like every year, a van load of Amish ladies came and went shopping.

I remember watching Amish in the City last year if I remember correctly that they got a year to experience life outside the Amish culture. Then they were allowed to choose before they took their final vows.

I DO!!! I'm not around them much here in Reading, but much of our family is in Lancaster County (Ephrata area). I have to remember how to safely pass when I get out that way.

Melrosgirl is right about the electricity & telephones only being used for for "business". Mennonites are similar to the Amish in culture but do take advantage of more modern conveniences.
