FYI. For everyone who had the old Mastercard SPG card and who now have the American Express SPG card. They waived the $120.00 annual fee and said that you would get 10,000 free Starwood points. That is ONLY if you spend $1,000.00 during the first 3 months. I am finding it harder to find merchants willing to take Amex. I did a lot of house renos lately and most companies do not use Amex. Visa and M/C are no problem......so make sure that you use it to qualify for the bonus points

Both Sears and Sears.ca will accept AMEX. And, if you collect Aeroplan points as well, go to Sears.ca through the Aeroplan estore portal, and use your AMEX. You will get your SPG points, plus Aeroplan points.

Its true, the downside of Amex is lower acceptance. They charge higher fees to the merchants, so a lot of smaller ones don't accept. It kills me every time I have to pull out my "other" card with few rewards because my Amex isn't accepted. Luckily for me, I do the majority of my groceries at Costco (with a 16 year old boy) and enough spending at other stores that I have no problem. I manage to get about 90% of my spending on Amex and only 10% on the other card.

You can pay some utilities bills by Amex, such as Bell, Rogers... and use it at gas station too.
