Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

They look like choir boys compared to Carole Pope and her band Rough Trade. She made her name in the business leaning heavily on S&M, Bondage and other “Adult only” themes. She was a champion for the LGBTQ community long before it was called that.. and before it was acceptable to do so.

That’s probably the main reason Rough Trade never made it in the US. Openly gay and defiantly in your face about it. A bit of kink thrown in. The early years of AIDS. The US political climate at the time. Even their name was provocative. A bit too much too soon even for many alternative US audiences. Mainstream America would have been outraged.

Sorry Buzz. Like Bryan Adams, you can't claim Nickelback either. They are from a small town outside of Calgary. We drove past the sign of a small town one time that said, "Home of Nickelback" and my husband wouldn't even slow down so I could take a picture!!!

I was waiting to see if the Canadians would claim Nickelback or let that one go.

I honestly can’t tell the difference sometimes between Canadian and American accents in movies/tv shows.

We watched Renovation Island on HGTV, the version they put on for House of Brian (or whatever it ended up being called) for the U.S. audience. In any case for the majority you wouldn't be able to distinguish that they are Canadian (who now have a home in FL who also own a resort on an island near the coast of FL) except when they say "progress" and "house". Those two words the accent if very strong.

We enjoyed I think the island renovation episodes more but when they were redoing and adding onto the house they bought in FL it was interesting to hear their perspective on building since Brian is a construction guy. For them the biggest was learning about needing to fortify the home for a hurricane and tornadoes. They were building a second story in a neighborhood that really only has 1 story (for reasons) and had to beef up the construction methods. One decision that I don't know why they did is they removed the screened cover for the pool area. In FL not having a cover is like crazy talk. My step-mom's parents lived in FL and we would spend time down there (one time for 3 weeks I got quite the tan after that) and it was amazing having that cover, bugs would still make it in but not nearly as much as when you went outside of the screened area and it def. cut down on the amount of leaves and tree stuff. We used to go collecting from the front of the house helicopter seeds as kids, not sure why but seemed liked all us kids just did that lol.

I also like Nickelback and have a few of their songs on my daily playlist. I also liked most of Hedleys stuff but I don’t go out of my way to find it, especially now. I feel bad for the other guys in the band…unless they knew things and didn’t say anything.

Well...if we are heading into the Arrogant Worms territory, then we must also not overlook Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie...ESPECIALLY their song The War of 1812. (And MAN! I really want to link the video here!!! In fact, I WOULD link the video here if it wasn't for the recent upheaval...ha!) For those not in the know, Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie was a Canadian comedy group from Edmonton. The song is meant to poke fun at history, not degrade any particular country.
