Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

I’m basing this on two things. Firstly, my friends/family know what it is (some of whom are not fans of the sport). I live in an area where MLS teams are known. MLS is mentioned on the local news and in our local and state papers. My team does well consistently in the league which may be a reason why most people in the region know what NYCFC is. Secondly, soccer is one of the most followed sports for Generations X, Y, and Z. There are many polls to support this. Many also may look down on MLS but also acknowledge its existence. If a state does not have an MLS team, I could see then why some don’t know about MLS Cup.

How does any of that help you decide that "most people my age know what MLS Cup is even if they don’t follow soccer"? None of it has anything to do with someone being Gen Y (unless you live in an area that only includes Gen Y people).

I mean, it may cause you to believe that most people in your region know about it (though, I'd suggest that there is a lot of confirmation bias there), but has nothing to with Gen Y.

Many of us have said we have little or no interest at all in sports, especially soccer. The Blue Jays are different, because they are all we've got. When they are doing well, we all hear about it on the news/radio. We still aren't tuning in to the games they play, if we weren't already watching them to begin with. If the Blue Jays happened to win anything, do you know when I would hear about it? The next morning on the radio. Would I be happy for them? Sure. Congrats Blue Jays! Now, pass the coffee creamer.
Me and these guys are all like "...the heck did she just say?!?"

Question for you, @Frozen Canuck : I'm not sure where exactly in the States you live, but does your city have an NBA team? If so, would you ever go when they play the Raps? We went to a game in Toronto last year, which we loved, but it was incredibly expensive and hectic. We plan to see another one (or more) this year but will travel to either San Francisco, LA or Dallas, which, believe-it-or-not, is a cheaper and easier trip for us than Toronto.

I’m going to move the discussion of this topic to my MLS thread shortly. I’m going to post articles and polls to back up what I’m saying.

I said my friends are Gen Y. The growing awareness of MLS Cup relies essentially on a couple of things. The viewing areas where MLS teams exist, the Latino population in an area, the league’s fan base and accessibility, and that the MLS has become an increasingly part of Gen Y and Z lives. I’m not saying it’s the number one sport among those populations, only that those populations are most likely aware MLS. Social media is obviously a small sample size but many of respondents on MLS threads on various social media websites are Gen Y and Z. I’ll take this discussion to my MLS thread. I don’t want to annoy or derail this thread due to my question.

There is a team in our general New England area (The Celtics). I have never been to a game, but if I did, I would ONLY go if they were playing the Raps!!! :cheer2:You don't think I would cheer for Boston, do you???

Well the Celtics are a better team….:duck:

One thing about the Raptors being Canada's Team, is that pretty much every game anywhere will have a noticeable number of Raps fans who have travelled there to see them. This is a picture from the 2019 play-off run against Golden State in San Francisco:

The same goes for the Blue Jays. I think my daughter has gone to a couple of games where they played against the Red Sox (obviously). They need their fans in the stands.

Whenever we're holidaying in the States during baseball season, we check to see if the Jays might be in town (or somewhere near where we are). It hasn't happened yet, but we'd definitely go if we got the chance. :cheer2:

Not sure about the Jays or Raptors, but often so much cheaper to watch the Leafs play outside of Toronto. Sometimes even if you are travelling there just for the game (i.e. including travel costs).

This says more about the method of communication used by certain generations, than it does about MLS. If every person in my generation was discussing MLS at coffee row, how would you know in order to compare?

Simple. Take a survey asking have they heard of MLS Cup before. Whether that’s an online poll, telephone survey, or a clipboard guy going from population to population. I’m going to find and post articles on MLS/generational popularity on soccer/MLS Cup on my MLS thread. Any survey is obviously just a generalization.

But MLS being more popular amongst those in Generation Y compared to other generations still does not prove your claim that most people generation Y know about the MLS cup.

ETA - debating what you can conclude from given evidence is literally what I do for a living.

Wait 2 weeks when MLS release it’s assessments on MLS Cup after November 5th.

I didn’t say it’s a practical solution. But it would work to a point.
So we are right back where we started this morning, with you making claims that can only be backed up with hypothetical data. Mentioning articles that show that MLS is on the rise (but nowhere near the level of other sports like the NFL, etc.) is not the same as backing up a claim that most millennials are aware of MLS because of their age.
