Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

So if I grew up in Buffalo and honeymooned in Vancouver can I get like 5% citizenship? (Before you say no, I had to go to Sudbury for a couple of weeks on a school exchange program and stay with folks who preferred pro wrestling to hockey so maybe I’ve earned 5%.)

How’s the weather in Canada today?

We’re 21°C which is 70°F and sunny. We live in an apartment so I invited us (and our dog) over to my parents house for the day so I can sit in their back yard and put my feel in their grass. I don’t like summer when it’s 52C with humidity but today will be perfect.

The only thing better would be to have my daughter there too, but she’s 21 so she’s out with friends.

In keeping with what seems to be a long weekend tradition here.. the sun is nowhere to be seen yet.. it’s hot - 28°C (82°F) with a humidity reading of 34°C (93.4°F) and we’ve had off & on showers.

Sun has been promised for later… but so have isolated thunderstorms 🤷🏻‍♀️

So it will be fireworks curtesy of the Town.. or fireworks curtesy of Mother Nature. But there will be fireworks! lol… 😂

The rest of the weekend is supposed to be pretty much perfect summer weather.

I’m just east of Toronto.

June is always a cool, rainy month here and we're not quite through with it, despite the calendar flipping to July. It's not actually raining just yet, although the thunder is rumbling. I hope it holds off - we're on our way to a yard party. party:

Posting this here not only because I know it will interest Buzz, but also because I believe it's something every tax-paying Canadian should be aware of. Bear in mind, there is no chance to recoup direct revenue because all ticket sales go straight to FIFA.

This isn’t anything new to be honest. Rarely does the World Cup or Olympics make the host countries money. The USA and a few others are the exception. FIFA and the IOC keep most of the profits and the tournaments purposely gave tax exclusions (which lowers the city’s ability to recoup money). Countries host for pride and advisement.

That's a pretty lame return, IMO. I'd be lying if I said I thought it was the biggest waste of tax money ever though, unfortunately.

The USA was going to host alone but Canada/Mexico wanted to tag along (and auto qualify). To be fair the USA usually makes money when others don’t because all the advertisers and facilities are already here. It’s why China wanted to have a contract with the IOC and FIFA for the next 20 years to host. They were rejected, thank goodness.
