Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

If anyone is interested in a beautiful piece of our shared history, I urge you to look up a TV mini-series called the Book of Negroes.

It is a little known fact that King Georg’s army enlisted every runaway slave they could find to fight for the British in the Revolutionary War. They were promised emancipation upon England’s victory. Well, that didn’t happen and when the British were expelled after the Paris treaties, the British scrambled feverishly to get as many former slaves out of America as possible. Few made it all the way back to England and then on to Africa, but thousands were deposited in British colonies in Nova Scotia. Their descendants are a large population there to this day. :goodvibes

Actually in America, we learn about it. But it should also be said that many in the northern 13 colonies were opposed to slavery. There were free blacks who fought in the American army and also some some slaves in the northern colonies that were granted freedom for their service. Some of the southern slaves were granted freedom as well. One example is James Armistead (though delayed). Virginia put a law in place for blacks who fought for the Americans in place to free them. https://edu.lva.virginia.gov/dbva/files/original/966df4eb19ba50f6c7af6e1e798eebd0.jpg
It should also be noted that while the British had some abolishment feelings on slavery, it was mostly due to the fact that they made money on other countries guilt for the practice (as it was still practiced in North America and the Caribbean). Britain outlawed slavery in the 1830’s due to not having to rely on it for business purposes and less so on moral grounds. And slavery was legal for some period of time in Canada (loyalists took their slaves with them). It was a little easier to outlaw in Canada due to the fact that farming and field labor requirements were different in Canada then in USA. Slavery is an unfortunate and sad part of both our countries’ histories but all stories on the issue in the American Revolution were unique and not all the same.

Well my ancestors are technically “Canadian” as my paternal grandmother’s & grandfather’s families were among the first “Cajuns” to come to Louisiana from Nova Scotia 😊.
Have you done genealogy from those bloodlines? I would think that must be very interesting history to explore. :-)

Is that based on the Lawrence Hill book?

What are Canadians/Americans hopes for their country going into 2022?
Better health. Certainly covid is part of that. But 2021 was a year I lost a lot of friends who literally just didn't wake up in the morning. No known health issues. None of them from covid.

Sorry for your losses

I don’t know what my hopes are.
