Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Kaiser is a "not for profit" not a "non-profit". As a "not for profit" they do earn a profit, they just don't distribute that profit to owners. A "non-profit" also would be legally allowed to accept donations.

I always get that wrong. Like how several Blue Cross and Blue Shield insurers around the country are not for profit.

Canadians, what’s a U.S. invented food/recipe that you have not tried before but have wanted too?

Don't shoot me....

Dole Whip.

Never had one, but I'd like to know what all the hype is about. :)

Where's your approximate location? Just the metro area to figure out where there might be a place that has it. Even though it's not frozen yogurt, some frozen yogurt shops have it because it works in standard soft serve machines. One place that almost always has it at every location is Menchie's. There are locations all over. The only caveat is that it's self serve, but then they weigh it.

"Dole Whip" is the unofficial nickname. It's officially called "Dole pineapple soft serve". There are other flavors too but the pineapple one is iconic.

I didn’t know you could even get them outside of a Disney place. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for it. Thanks.

Do Canadians have absentee voting?

Yes. I voted in the election last month even though I currently live in Switzerland. A few years ago there was a whole big thing about non-residents voting but the law that limited to those who had lived in Canada within the last five years was removed. Though, to be fair, that never affected me anyway since I was exempt due to where I work (though, again to be fair, the law changed before I hit the five year mark, so I never claimed the exemption).

So that is very absentee (not just « I happen to be away/travelling/busy on Election Day »). My vote is counted in the riding of my last my place of residence in Canada.

The benefit to Americans often not knowing much about Canada, is that, when I lived in the US and made an error on something like spelling or pronunciation or whatever, I could say « Oh, well that’s how we do it in Canada ». Even got a way with it sometimes

Can’t think of anything.
Is there any Canadian food you want to try?
Canadian food is typically not something talked about in the USA, It’s just not. Most have never heard of Tim Hortons, Swiss Chalet and that sort of thing. Canadian food would be looked at what it mostly is, American food. Mexican food, Chinese, Cuban , Italian that sort of thing Americans talk about on a regular basis. Canadian food? Practically never.

To be fair that is just poutine.

And none of those foods are actually Mexican or Chinese, or Italian. You sound a lot like a guy that used to post here before, wish I could remember his user name.

I was being facetious. You really think Canadians sit around and talk about "American" food?
