American word meanings?

We call a napkin a serviette, but have also heard them called napkins in posh restaurants.

The one we found hard to get used to was chips (UK) & fries (US) and crisps (UK) & chips (US)

When we were in Australia, my teenage niece and nephew(aussies of course) would beg us when we were going out to eat "don't call it a napkin". Kind of fun to tease them into thinking we would mortify them !

I had a friend in high school who was an exchange student from Australia and she turned 18 here, so we were making plans for the weekend and she said "I can't believe I am not allowed to buy alcohol here, so Chris's dad is gonna get me some... Wanna go get pissed somewhere with us?" I said, "With who? The liquor store owner does not make the laws, no point getting mad at them".

She stared at me for a minute and then said "I just want to find a place to drink the booze is all."

We sorted it out eventually! Of course I wouldn't drink, but I watched her get pissed!

Okay, since we're on this subject...I can't help but remember my BIL's story. He was in the Air Force when the neighbor, who was British came knocking on the door...it seems she'd lost her wee little kitty....and I won't even type the word she used, but "Excuse, me...have you seen my BLEEP? was sure to turn his face beet red....roflol

I also like the word "trainers" for tennis shoes...
