American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

Were Fantasia or Ruben on the show last night? I didn't see them but thought maybe I missed it when I was out of the room or something.

The best part of the night was seeing Clay! The worst part (for me) was Prince. Ick!

I'm so happy Taylor won but Kat would have deserved it too.

Hmmm..."Ed" may be the lead singer, but last night WAS about the IDOLS's, not the guest performers. I could barely hear Chris over the "Ed". It WAS Chris's "chance" In my opinion. All of the other stars (including Toni Braxton and Mary J) should have been BACKUP to the Idol's performance.

Note to "ED" and also Ace...if you want to see how a good falsetto is done and DONE RIGHT, go re-watch the Prince performance.
Ouch!

I thought the Meatloaf Kat duet was so good that he should tour with her. I forgot how much I love him!!

Really not neccesary! :(

Wow these threads are confusing me this morning -- what is really not necessary?

I think they were saying it is really not necessary to have Meatloaf tour with Kat (i.e. as in "please don't let that happen")

That is how I read that.

I didn't see them on or during arrivals.

Justin Guarini was there. I am SHOCKED that they didn't let him sing.

I mean--he's working on his third album and everything. :woohoo:

:teeth:

OKay, maybe I took this entirely the wrong way. I just know that I am a Kat fan, and a Meatloaf fan. And Meatloaf was horrible, and a little scary last night. I don't know if this is a dig at that?

I think a more fitting number for Toni Braxton would have been to get all the contestants that have ever tried to sing "Unbreak My Heart" all lined up in a row, and let her punch them. :lmao:

Oh, and how the hell is it that Prince gets sexier as he gets older? (ok, so he gets more weird too, but... meeee-ow!)

I lurk her every week. Today I'd like to say that I do believe this is the
best group of singers they've ever had. Last year's group performances
were always dicey with someone always off key. This year, I've really
enjoyed them. Bottom line: all twelve finalists can sing and carry a tune,
and seem to be able to sing well with others!

I was dreading a two hour finale, but I thoroughtly enjoyed it!

OK...............I almost sprayed my screen with my morning coffee on that one! Thanks MzDiz for the belly laugh! :thumbsup2

Oh, and you're right about Prince, too!

Well its been 12 hours and I’m coming out of my shock.

Thinks I never ever want to see again include:

1) Katherine McPhee’s mother’s breasts
2) Katherine McPhee’s father crying
3) Any of the “comic relief” losers like Ronetta or the boy who sounded like Cher
4) Ace Young making googly eyes
5) Kelly Pickler making googly eyes
6) Kevin Covais singing about pussycats
7) Meatloaf in any shape or form
8) Tori Braxton trying to get nasty with Taylor on stage
9) Chris singing Bacharach
10) Clay Aiken as a K.D. Lang lookalike

I do however hope to see a lot more of Prince, he was fantastic! Also loved the singing cowboys, what a hoot, and dang, those boys are all talented! And I am so proud of our new American Idol!! Go Taylor!! :) :) :)

I didn't mean anything bad about the deadbeat comment but what I meant to inply was he did not have a regular 9 to 5 job and play music on the side as a hobby. He has already cut two cd's and was waiting for his big break. Yes he was able to do this with the support of his family but he was also sleeping on family members couches because he couldn't aford a place of his own. I am very happy for Taylor he has made his big break and will do well and he will remember those that helped him along the way.

It is also interesting to note that immediately before Taylor decided to try out for AI, his father gave him the talk about going into another line of work as music wasn't working out for him.

I get the feeling it was like "OK, we have put up with this long enough, now get a real job" ... much like I would be with my son, LOL.

It must be exciting for Dr. Hicks to see his son achieve something he's been working at forever, especially since a new career path had been discussed.

As far as the "Soul Patrol" shout outs, DH thinks it's annoying too, but it's nice that he thanks his fans without being prompted by Ryan to do it during an interview.

Recently I heard something on TV elluding to Clay being gay? Is that true? What makes people say that? I guess I'm out of he loop. :confused3

After reading through some of these posts this morning I must second the following observations:
1) I had enormous issues with Kevin singing the pussycat song :sad2: and DH yelled "Is he grabbing his crotch?".
2) DH commented that Ace should listen to Prince on how to do falsettos.
3) Come to think of it, Clay did look like Harry Potter! Good one.
4) Carrie looked like a total professional. She's made us Okies so proud...
5) I didn't notice Toni's hand gestures, but I had to leave the room because her singing was so bad.
6) We both noticed that Mary J. seemed to take over the song. What was that about?
7) I hated the Puck & Pickler routine. Enough already. But her hair was cute!
8) Elliot & Mandissa may have sounded the best last night!
9) I don't know if it's been said but must Melissa always show her midriff section? I'm shocked she didn't cut a hole in her red dress to let it out...
Okay, got that off my chest. Congrats to Taylor.

My itty-bitty takes on the AI finale...

What in the world was up with those guest singers?!? YIKES. Toni Braxton & Meatloaf AND Mary K. Blige :confused3 !!! NONE of them, if they had sung that badly as they did last night :listen: , would have made it beyond the first round of auditions! All three of them were embarassing, if not downright scary-bad  . (Clay was fine, Prince while not my cup of tea at least put on a good performance.)

I thought the Golden Idols were kind of wierd.

Elliott looked like he's had some work done on his teeth since last week. For those of you who TIVO-ed the finale, take a look at the left side of his mouth. There used to be a BIG gap on the left side just behind the front teeth - his teeth used to look...garbled somehow. I think they've been fixed!

I wish I could have heard more of Mandisa. I hope she puts out an album of soul or gospel...yowza, what a set of pipes!

Kevin Covais surprised me. He actually does have a good voice, but his looks worked against him.

agnes!

I hate to reiterate what's already been said, but can't help chiming in now that I've had some time to reflect on the finale...

Meatloaf sounded terrible, off-key, out-of-breath, and like he was dying. Poor Kat did the best she could with that train wreck. I was proud of her for giving it her best and smiling at the end. Jeesh.

Toni Braxton used to have a beautiful voice. What happened? You couldn't hear her or understand her - and she looked/acted like she was "on something." Like so many of you have said, I was ROFLMAO at Taylor's reaction when she grabbed him.

The Puck and Pickler segments were priceless!!!!

Unlike most of you, I enjoyed the Burt Bacharach medley, although Dionne Warwick sounded terrible at the end. I think that all of them did great jobs with these songs (except that Kevin creeped me out). It's amazing how much it helps a singer to have a good song, with a good, strong melody to sing. I was particularly impressed with Elliott (of course), Lisa Tucker, Ace Young, and Mandisa.

Bo and Carrie sounded so much better last year singing "I've Had the Time of My Life" than Kat and Taylor did. I remember DH and I saying last year that they should actually release that duet as a single. Not these two though. Yuck. I guess that's why they didn't have them sing more songs together. Their voices just don't mesh.

Prince....OK. I'll admit that I saw Prince in concert in 1983 at the height of his initial popularity. I'll also admit that I enjoyed his appearance - although the bookend back-up singers were a little bit "disturbing." However, this just didn't fit into the rest of the show. I know it was supposed to be a big surprise, but it was like he was "honoring" them with his presence. Just seemed like a tacked on afterthought.

Finally - my man Taylor won. DH only watches the show intermittently, but he said about two months ago... "Why don't they just give it to the gray-haired guy now and save the trouble?"

You guys are ON today!!!

Wow, even people at my office who would rather DIE than watch AI watched it last night. I can only imagine the numbers they get!

For those who want to see the new Clay look check this out: http://www.gofish.com/userVideoPlayer.gfp?gfid=30-1035546

I think he looked great.

As for Tony and Meatloaf, I didn't see them as that bad. As for the Purple Badness, he was my heart in the 80s and he hasn't aged a minute! Go Prince!

And for MY MAN... my sig says it all.

Ryan just played Taylor's single on KIIS fm. I was hoping I would like the recorded version better than the live, but it's just a bad song. It really doesn't allow Taylor to sing in the style that suits him. I like syrupy songs, but this year was just way over the top. However, I'm sure it will be #1 when it is released and it will encourage the producers to keep coming out with these crummy songs. I don't think they get that people will buy bad songs to support artists that they care about.

Oh my gosh.... I completely forgot my favorite moment!!!!

I LOVED when they panned the audience at the end, after the announcement, and showed David Hasselhoff... crying :rotfl2:

I must say I enjoyed last nights finale. Talk about hilarious :lmao: !

Toni Braxton- Simon would've said that was ghastly :rotfl: ! She rubbing all over Taylor.
Mary J Blige- She just over powered poor Elliot. Talk about hogging the stage. Didnt care for her extra large sunglasses :confused3
Meatloaf- Enough said :sad2: !
Kevin Covias- Chicken little singing about a pussycat??? Still don't get that number and the girls bopping up & down in the background :rotfl: .
Dionne Warwick- Hang it up. It's time to retire hunny!
Al Jarreau- I enjoyed Al & Paris. Nice way to kick off the show!
Clay Aiken- Nice to see Clay again. Not sure about the new hairdo..
Prince- Best performance!!!

Also enjoyed the 3 past contestants (cowboys). They actually did a good job!
Loved the awards too. The one chick in NC that was cursing up a storm. How funny :rotfl2: !

All in all, I'm glad Taylor won!!! Soul Patrol!!!! :cheer2:

I found this and got a few chuckles... :rotfl2:

20 Random Idol finale observations
May 25, 2006. 08:23 AM
VINAY MENON

1. Carrie Underwood thought-bubble: "Okay, now we’re even. I’m so done with American Idol after tonight."

2. Is Heather Locklear dating Ben Stiller?

3. Chris Daughtry is performing with his favourite band, Live. Guess that’s a screw-you to Fuel.

4. Did Wolfgang Puck just say kissing Kellie Pickler "was the perfect appetizer"?

5. Yes, Kellie, escargot is pronounced "escargoatee." My God, she’s going to vomit on live television!

6. In a constant attempt to make Katharine seem slimmer, producers resort to Plan B: a duet with Meatloaf.

7. Get the stun-gun before that jumping freak Dave Hoover injures somebody in the audience!

8. More Puck 'n' Pickler: Now Kellie is trying to hypnotize a lobster.

9. Are we really listening to a medley of BTO and Fleetwood Mac?

10.Um, when did Mary J. Blige enter the Witness Protection Program?

11.I think Toni Braxton is lipsynching!

12. Just what Clay Aiken needs: singing an Elton John song classic while joined on stage by a hyperventilating male superfan.

13. The finalists are performing with... Burt Bacharach? Seriously, is it 2006 or have I fallen through a hole in the space-time continuum?

14. Chicken Little just got caught between the moon and New York City.

15. Next category in the Golden Idol Awards ... 'Best Male Bonding'. This may be the first TV show that’s in the closet.

16. Prince walks off stage and Ryan Seacrest suddenly looks tall enough to play in the NBA.

17. Just before the winner is announced, Katharine and Taylor are dressed for the prom and singing a duet though neither appears to be having the time of their lives.

18. On the record 63.4 million votes, Ryan says, "That’s more than any president in the history of our country has ever received!" Yes, jack***, because teens are not permitted to vote 10,000 times each in national politics.

19. Taylor Hicks is the American Idol! And for a nice change, somebody other than Katharine’s father is crying. Don’t be shy! Let it all out, Mr. Hicks! If David Hasselhoff can weep, so can you!

20. Taylor is singing his debut single 'Do I Make You Proud?' No, not at this moment. Hey, he’s already won, no reason to sing in tune now. Soul Patrol!
