There are several different kinds of accents in NY, most owned by certain ethnicities, very few sound the exact same.
I can put mine on when I want to, but many years of speech and theatre has obliterated the rough side of it.

I can go from sounding like James Earl Jones and roll down to Tony Soprano when I'm good and mad.
How can you tell a NYer? Ask them to say "daughter" or "dog". You'll hear it right away!
