Breaking News! Iran just agreed to release Sarah Shourd, the female hiker who has been in prison for over a year. No word on what will become of the two males who were with her.

I wonder if somebody paid the $500,000 "bail" Iran was demanding?

This is from CNN

Sarah Shourd, one of three American hikers detained for more than a year in Iran, has been released from prison, state-run Press TV reported Tuesday.

Attorney Massoud Shafii, who is representing the hikers, had said everything was in place for Shourd's release once bail of $500,000 was submitted to the Iranian judiciary.

So happy she was released. Now praying for her safe arrival home and for the safety of her friend and fiancee still being held.

Wow, half a million smackers. I was watching Morning Joe yesterday and they were saying conventional wisdom around media and government people was that these three WERE C.I.A. and not just hikers as claimed. Glad she's free, hope the others are soon.

Note to self:

Do NOT hike in Iran....:surfweb:

:lmao:

I'm always amazed at these stories. I will have to go look it up but what were they doing in Iran. I have to admit my first thought was the old Mission Impossible show where after they get the assignment, the recording would say "If you or any of your team is captured, we will disavow any knowledge."

I'm glad she was released and hope that the others will be as well. That said, what the heck were they thinking? In this entire world with so many fascinating places, why would anyone decide that hiking along the Iraq/Iran border was the best place to go? Was it to expensive to get to North Korea? Flights to the Afghan/Pakistan region all booked? Did like the accomodations in Sudan or Somalia? The idea that Americans would be hiking there is so extraordinary that it is hard not to believe that they were spies. I'm struggling to imagine that anyone would have such horrible judgment.

I'm amazed and struggling, too. Makes me almost wonder if they can be a deterrent but NO, we'll hear of some other "hiker" in some mess in time again. :sad2:

If they were spies, what the heck could they have been spying on in the middle of nowhere?

Reminds me of something...

If they weren't spies they were definitely among the most stupid people on the planet. That in itself, should be a punishable offense.

I was wondering this myself. Of all the places in the world that one can hike or in this country alone. Why in heaven's name would you go hiking over there?

One really has to work hard and suspend disbelief to accept that they were simply innocent hikers--I mean, if they were that stupid, how would they have founf there way all the way over there?

I have a hard time believing it happened this way:

Girl: Where do you want to go on vacation this year? Hawaii?
Boy 1: Nah, I did that two years ago. How about Vegas?
Boy 2: I lost my $#% there last time I went, plus married a dancer while I was drunk. Not going to Vegas. Disney World, maybe?
Girl: Too crowded that week. Let's go skiing.
Boy 1: I broke my leg last time I went skiing. Have we got enough money to go to the Galapagos Islands?
Boy 2: Maybe, but those freaky animals creep me out. Let's go to the wine county.
Girl: No, too many empty calories for me, and Boy 2 could wind up married again if we're not careful.
Boy 1: I feel like doing something that makes me one with the earth.....Primal and back to basics.
Boy 2: The rainforest! We'll go to the rainforest!
Girl: Are you kidding? Humidity and mosquitoes all at once? Not to mention snakes. No way. A dude ranch might work.
Boy 1: Too touristy. I want something unique.....Off the beaten path. Something that will blow our friends away when we brag on Facebook.
Boy 2: I have the perfect solution. Let's go hiking in the paradise that is the Iranian border region. It's so welcoming to women....Girl will adore it there. And heaven knows they are always happy to see a friendly American face. It's the trip of a lifetime. A dream few will ever live to see come true. QUICK! Book the flights before someone else gets the same idea and beats us to it!!!!

:rolleyes:Seriously.....What demented mind thinks this is a good idea? Let alone THREE demented minds. No......I'm a little suspicious myself. Either they are the spawn of the Three Stooges or they are fudging the facts.

While it is good news without a doubt, it always amazes me that people put themselves in these positions in the first place.

It always amazes me that people think they happened to just be hiking through the area. I'm sure they "put themselves" in that position as part of their job.

I heard she was being released because of health reasons, does anyone know what's wrong with her?

EMom, I love it! Hilarious!

I agree it was a stupid move. If they are CIA....I think it's time for new recruits.
