American Girl Dollhouse?

Does anyone have a doll house that you can use for American Girl dolls? My DD loves all of her doll and wants a dollhouse for them so DIS help!!

The only "house" I know of aren't houses...Kit's Tree house and Lanie's camper. They are more like "play" houses. And they are expensive. (Lanie's camper may actually be sold out and Kit's treehous is over $200.)

AG are usually like little buddies with stuff in their size. You can't buy a house, but you can buy them furniture. (a doll house would be too big!)

We bought a wardrobe for AG sized dolls at Target that also has a vanity in it, they have their beds from Ikea and that is all we own.

The furniture to accomodate the dolls is large, so the best way to create a dollhouse is to convert something that isn't a dollhouse into one--say an old computer cabinet or something.

Just make sure you make it safe for your child. You don't want her climbing on the shelving to get her doll to the 3rd floor for example.

But typically--YOUR house is the AG doll's house.

I've actually considered trying to do something like this. DD has a large corner that would be AWESOME if we could do built in shelving there and then frame it out to resemble a huge dollhouse. I doubt we will actually do that - I'd rather use the space for floor to ceiling shelving that will accomodate other things like books/dvds/stuffed toys/etc...

Right now she has a corner of her room set up with the Our Generation trundle bed, the AG bed she got at the Marriott in Atlanta, and her OG Armoire. Her pink Christmas tree is there as well but it will be coming down in a day or two.

That's one reason I haven't bought tons of furniture...we just don't have a good place to store it and spreading it around the floor didn't seem like much fun. She does have a tub and salon chair but she tends to use those things for "spa" so she just gets them out as she needs them.

Closest AG ever came out with were the "Scenes and Settings" books. I had one for Samantha when I was a kid. They are large heavy duty laminated cardboard backdrops from places in the books. So I had Samantha's bedroom, her classroom, a dock at Piney Point, etc. And I could open them up, they were roughly to scale with the dolls, and play that way.

They still turn up on ebay on occasion, so if you have a historical doll that was available in the mid 90s you might have luck with that. Beware they can get pricey.

But in that vein I wonder if there is a wall or something that a backdrop could be painted on, then put furniture against it? It seems that if you wanted a dollhouse even big enough for the dolls to stand in comfortably you're talking each story being at least 2 feet tall! That could get out of hand quickly, imho.

Target had an Our Geneneration house, but it was more like a house shaped tent than a dollhouse. They were 30% off last time I checked our store.

I was just popping back in to share that I saw this in the clearance spot today at our local Target.

It isn't too big, but might fit the bill.

My kids took up about half their room and have two large beds, two travel beds(that also fold up, you get these in NYC when staying at the marriott and doing the AG package), two of the target closet/armoires, two AG desks(so like a room that is a school), a kitchen(from target), a AG table and chairs near it, and blow up sofa from build a bear...... so they sort of made their own house. It is in the corner, so two walls and then the enclosed the other side by placing their toy chest and toy with bin stand backwards, making more walls. It is an american girl paradise... oh and they have a tub area too, and are dying for a toilet but I can't seem to find an 18 inch doll toilet anywhere! They even gave up having their own rooms to make their AG paradise. Just fyi, the armoire/closet from target is a great toy, and I got it for $47, compared to Julie's locker at $175.

oh, i forgot the AG hair salon chair, haha.....

The problem with American Girls is that the dollhouses have to be super big! The dolls are 18", so the beds are at least 20" long. And any shelving unit that you buy to use has to be at least 20" tall.

I saw some metal shelving at Staples that would fit the bill - $70, I think, for a 4-shelf unit. (DD wouldn't be able to reach the top, though). It would be enough for 3 individual rooms, I think.

At our house the 'girls' live in American Girl Land, which has taken over the formal dining room table. Flexible, so it can be individual homes one day and a horse academy the next. I try to be smart about the big pieces that are bought, too - while I encouraged bunk beds and Kit's kitchen, I keep naysaying the bubble tub.

I saw a great cute one when I was searching a few months ago. Someone built one into a corner of the room - wide, deep shelves were mounted to the wall. I bought the Rose Petal Cottage from Toys R Us last year. They are perfect. We have them set up in a corner. The sink, washer, etc. are also a great size for the AG dolls. Here is a link to what they look like.

I bought DD one of those 3 shelf heavy duty plastic storage shelfs (like you would put out in a garage) and set that in a corner of her room to put her AG furniture on. She turned it into a 3 story townhouse that fit most of her AG larger pieces.

DD, 7 just got her first doll for the Holidays. She's set up a corner in the playroom for her dolls with a bed she got (not AG, but very cute) and a storage box/closet I picked up from AC Moore. DD is very crafty and she's been spending the last few weeks building her doll furniture from boxes, etc. I was so worried that an AC doll would be a waste of money, but it is such a hit since she can create things for it. She loves to look on youtube at rooms and accessories and how to make them. She has now requested I buy her some modeling clay so she can make food. She made her a remote control yesterday so she can watch tv. lol.

Can you recommend which videos she followed? Did some turn out better than others? I just did a quick search and got A LOT of results...
