Hi,

My almost 6 year old wants an American Girl doll or the Princess and Me doll at Toys R Us. Is there a difference? Our friend has an AG girl doll and her hair was really soft and manageable. Are their other dolls out with that same type of hair..or is that why the AG doll is so expensive?

Thanks so much for your input!

I am wondering that also. My granddaughter wants the Bitty twins. I don't mind spending the money, but I want to know if I am spending it on the quality or the name brand. :confused3

I got my DD the Target brand doll first to see if she was actually going to play with it before shelling out the big bucks. She absolutley LOVES her (and doesn't know she's fake). The fake doll is good quality, except for the hair, like you said. It is a horrible mess and DD has taken good care of her (altough she has been played with, not kept on a shelf). We're planning to get a real one now. I think it is worth the money if DD will play with it and love it.

American Girl is a quality made doll =) Not saying others are not, my older DDs had American Girls, we celebrated 2 birthdays at American Girl in Chicago GREAT time, they had a doll salon and did updos!! You are paying for the brand, I bought my friends daughter an Our Generation Doll it was not comparable, the hair was horrible, the face was just okay. That said DD4 asked for Princess and Me Ariel doll, I've read great reviews and so-so reviews DD4 has no idea what an American Girl is :goodvibes DD9 who does not play with dolls asked to go back to American Girl, she likes the American Girl world. Its up to you.

The American Girl dolls hair is much more manageable in comparison to the cheaper dolls, but definitely use the wire brush they recommend.

The Bitty Twins are AMAZING! I saw them for the first time this summer and my couldn't stop fiddling with them and I normally won't pay the slightest attention to a baby doll. After seeing the Bitty Twins I don't see why anyone would get the normal Bitty Baby because the twins are so much better in quality.

I nearly cringed when my 8DD asked for an American Girl doll. I thought $100 for a doll was a bit much really, especially since I was thinking the novelty would wear off real quick.

I have to say she loves that doll and takes her everywhere we go. The doll get strapped in our truck, sits at the table with us and I am always braiding her hair! lol

We visited the AG store in Chicago and Seattle and both are fantastic. I thought my daughter at 8 might be on the older side of getting one of these dolls but she tells me Rachel her doll is also 8 and she adopted her. :)
And by the ages of the girls walking around both stores, carrying dolls, 8 is well within the age range for one of these dolls.

The hair is great and the clothing they sell is really well made. If I knew how much she would love and care for her doll I wouldn't have cringed at all over the money.

Even though you pay the $100 for the AMERICAN girl and it says right on the box - Made In China - and well we live in CANADA ! lol

DD got the Bitty Baby (vs the Bitty Twins) for two reasons. Grandma got it for her for her 1st birthday because the bitty baby looks just like dolls Grandma used to have when she was little and there was no such thing as the Bitty Twins at that time. ;)

I gave an American Girl to my cousin, but she's from Brazil, and she didn't understand why they didn't make Brizalian Girl Doll's. She's decided that she's going to write the first books in the Brazilian girl series.

That's true, if you are looking for that style of doll that looks like that then the Bitty Baby is great and the Bitty Babies were also great before the Bitty Twins were around to be compared to. I was just saying that I was never interested in the Bitty Baby but I really like the Bitty Twins.

DD has several AG. The only brand I feel is comparable is Gotz. (They were the company that produced the original AG dolls.) They have a Precious Day 18" collection that is the same size/quality as the Just like You dolls. The MaxiMuffins are the same size as the Bitty Twins. (Eg both can wear clothes made by American Girl.)

Gotz often has dolls at Tuesday Morning (I've heard also sometimes at TMaxx/Marshalls) in the range of $30. Well worth it.

DD has had her MaxiMuffin for 9 years (since she was 2.) She doesn't play with her anymore, but she carted her around everywhere when she was little. That thing still looks awesome- hair and all. Advantage too, the Gotz ones can go through the washing machine. (She dumped cocoa on the doll one time.) AG cannot.

She did have a Target doll as her first 18", the hair was AWFUL. One big clumpy matted mess within a couple months. In hindsight, I do not see an advantage to getting a Target doll to "see how much they like it". You're spending $30+ on something that WILL be junk sooner than later. If you spend the $100 on an AG- and she doesnt like it- the resale value on them is huge.

FYI, too- the Cecile and Marie-Grace dolls are now 25% off. First time I've ever seen dolls (and their whole collection) on sale.

I am the grandmother of Felicity, Elizabeth, Lanie, a Just like Me, Anne (a Madame Alexander from Williamsburg) and a My Disney Girl. These dolls are *all* DD9 plays with--and she plays with them all the time. The AG dolls are worth the additional money. We ordered the My Disney Girl for Christmas last year and when we got it, we opened the box, my husband looked at it and said "Order an American Girl, we'll save this for her birthday at Disney. Santa wouldn't bring this crap after the other ones."

I can't help on a Brazilian Girl......but that's a great idea your cousin has! RCMommy, if your daughter wants a Canandian Girl, they Maplelea dolls are very comparable. Their line appears to be growing, they just brought out a new doll. I'm sure (as an actual Canadian) you may have seen/heard of them :) We live in the US and Santa brought DD a Maplelea Girl last year. Jenna looks JUST like DD, it was unreal, so we had to buy her LOL I have found her to be just as good a quality as the AG's we have, she's just a bit skinnier and her hands are made in a different position.

We have an AG doll, Tiana from the Princess & Me Collection, a My Disney Girl doll and a predecessor to the My Disney Girl (whose name escapes me right now). The quality of the AG is better than the others. Tiana has a beautiful face, but the dolls are all vinyl and she actually squeaks a bit when you move her legs. The princess & me dolls are also a bit thinner than the other brands. The other Disney dolls are nice quality, but the hair is not as good. All that being said, Tiana is my dd's favorite.

American girl can not be beaten on the quality of their dolls. The doll hair is the best hair ever. The cheaper dolls hair is theirs thing I noticed it was not worth it to spend 30$ or so on the cheaper ones and then I the end we bought AG and have never looked back.

Does anyone have a MyTwinn doll? My niece has an AG and a Princess and Me, and I was thinking about going in with my parents to order her a MyTwinn for Christmas, but I wanted to hear from someone who had bought one to find out if they're worth the cost (they start at $149).
