Do anyone know if you can pay your onboard charges with American express gift cards? We have earned quit a bit with our points on our American express credit card. If not, I am sure there are other things I could use them for...LOL

Possibly. I would recommend going to the Guest Services desk right after you board and asking them.

DCL wouldn't take my American Express gift card as payment towards a cruise. I tried to pay my deposit with one and couldn't. When I called American Express, they said the gift cards on not accepted on "ships." Or course they take your American Express credit card! Seems weird. You can call and double check with American Express. But I had no luck.

Lisa is right, you cannot use the gift cards on ships. I just got AmEx gift cards to give to people at Christmas and noticed that it says that right on the terms of use information that comes with the card. I don't really know exactly why this is when the ship will take a regular AmEx for payment, but they won't take an AmEx gift card. Strange, but true. LOL!

You might try calling DCL to see if you can buy on board credit with it...just a thought.

This is the information I found. I don't understand why you can't use this; however, the ship gladly accepts my American express charge card. :confused3

Guess I am forced to go pre-cruise shopping. :rotfl:

** Some restrictions on merchant acceptance will apply to the Gift Card. The Gift Card is for use within the United States only. It cannot be used at Car Rentals, Cruise Lines, Casinos, ATMs or for recurring billing purchases (cellular phone service, subscriptions, etc.). Usage restrictions also apply for international airlines. Additional restrictions apply. See terms and conditions.

There is something strange about cruise lines and gift cards . . . my daughters were given $25 VISA gift cards by my aunt for Christmas, and I called DCL to have them applied to my stateroom account for our upcoming March 24 cruise. They were all declined! I called the company and they said that DCL adds an automatic service charge to every gift card amount, so they decline it because it would go overlimit (if I try to apply $25, DCL will charge VISA more than that). I later used the cards at stores and had no problem.

Maybe it's possible to use it to purchase disney dollars with them and then put those towards your shipboard account.

just a thought:upsidedow

Wow! That is a great thought. Can you purchase Disney Dollars with a credit card? If so, I bet that would work then! Because you can use the card at the Disney store - just not for the ship. Very strange. Lisa

Yes, you can buy DD with a credit card. Just be sure to tell the CM ringing you up how much is on each card. If we put through a CC gift card that is less than the purchase it will be declined.
So if you are buying $100 DDs and the card is only $75 the card would be declined. However, we can enter the amount to be charged to the card and it should be accepted.

as far as being able to use it in the store and not on the ship, that is more of a CC regulation than a retailers regulation.

I think this is correct.:thumbsup2 Just make sure that you do a purchase for exactly the amount each card is for. You may have to do more then one purchase if you are using multiple cards. I use this trick on visa rebate cards I have gotten in the past. I will use them at say Vons, which sells gift cards to other stores, in the exact amount of the rebate visa. Trying to use rebate/gift card like visa or amex is harder to use unless you are using for an exact amount. i.e transfer into a different gift card for a store you shop at or for disney dollars.
