Okay, I am fairly sure that I've read this here...

When I go into the ports...Grand Cayman and Cozumel specifically...I can use my American dollars to shop? Right? I believe I read here that it is actually preferred and can sometimes get you a better bargain since American dollars are better on the exchange.

If someone could confirm that using American dollars is okay I would appreciate it!

Thanks!

I have been on both the Eastern and the Western and only used US dollars in port.

We used a combination of US cash and American Express Traveler's checks while in port at Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Costa Maya, and never had a problem. They give you back the change in US money.

I used US dollars in GC and Cozumel. Be wary, though, as I had issues with merchants trying to short change me in Cozumel, so I'll probably carry smaller bills and pay with exact change next time I go.

Because we came from Australia, we also had travellers cheques (in US dollars) as well as $US. Had no problem using either in
Cozumel - for large (emerald ring) or small purchases, taxis or entrance into Chankanaab Park.

Thanks for the info fellow DISsers! I really appreciate it!

I had planned on US cash and travelers checks...I feel pretty confident about Cozumel shopping...I speak Spanish well enough to get through the bartering. Thanks for the heads up though!
