Relay for Life is coming up this upcoming weekend. I am taking my Brownie troop there. We are making motivational signs for those walking to keep them going!! We are also making greeting cards that we are going to be giving the cancer survivors.

And, I am on my work's team, so I get to do some walking, too!

Hope it doesn't rain......I might melt!! :smooth:

Thanks for doing all that, Kristy!

I am also doing a six-miler next Sunday for a local Cancer Center. DH brings the form to work and his co-workers are so generous (I had treatments at this center). He came home yesterday with over $2000.00 in donations!

YEEEEEEEEE-HHHAAAAAAAAAAAA!

will be doing the run. She is a breast cancer survivor. I have donated 3 bags. One for my mom who did not survive, 2 pink bags - one for Karen and one for my MIL - both survivors. If I get a chance I'll post pictures of them.

I guess they put sand and candles in the bag and light them at night during the relay. Suppose to be very beautiful and moving.

My bags are decorated with sayings and flowers etc.

Does your group do the same thing?

Yes, we do that. They line the track with them as well as the street leading to the park.

I'm thinking about doing it next year,my dad died of cancer when I was 16

I did relay for life in my town on a team with my youth group. It was very nice, my band played at the beginning and marched around the track with the survivors. Then during the other ceremony when they light the luminaries the youth chior sang. It was very nice. Unforunatly a couple of hours later it started to storm. It seemed like we could of had a tornado! We noticed the sky starting to look like rain so we started to gather some of our stuff up. I have never carried so much heavy stuff in my life! It was crazy! We were able to get everything taken care of and loaded in the back of a truck. I went with a few people to unload at the church and finally got home at about 2!!

I'm sure you will have a great time at yours!!:jester:

The Relay for Life is great! Thanks for your post because you reminded me that I need to find a team to support here. I guess I could still support the team I did before I moved, but it would be nice to support a local team.

Thanks to all of you who work so hard to put together the Relay for Life!!!!!

I searched for this thread...did not know if anyone else was doing this.

I went last night for the first time. My sister has been doing this a few years, and walks with her husbands team from work.

My sister and I logged over 6 miles. We just kept going around the track! I ran into a lot of people I knew and it was a fun time.

We bought luminaries for our father. He died when I was 15.
We also bought one for our DSIL who passed away last year at the age of 48.

Not only was doing something to honor them, but I was helping myself by exercising. I am sure Dad and Arnetta were smiling on all of us there.

(Just a side note, even my DH, DD and two DS came out to help!)
It was a wonderful evening.

Wow! That is outstanding :D !

I'll keep my fingers crossed for good weather for all of you who have your relays and events this weekend. Our Relay for Life is next weekend. It is always a moving experience and I am hoping this year is just as wonderful since it is the first time in our new location.

Have a great weekend everyone :)!

Relay For Life is fabulous!! We just finished our relay this morning!! My family came down last night and joined in with all the festivites and speeches. We had SOOOO much food. I walked from 2:30 AM to 4:10 AM and am very tired right now, but it was so worth it.

My team is Patrices' Angels and my dear friend Patrice has just had a relapse with Oral Cancer. Her spirits are remarkable but the physical problems are draining. She is such an inspiration and a true Survivor!!

God Bless all the Survivors. The first lap around the track, called the Survivor Lap is so emotional......

My Brownie troop went last night. After the survivor lap, we handed out the homemade greeting cards that the girls made. The folks seemed to really enjoy it. A truly wonderful experience. We are going back next year as a "pseudo" team where we don't have to raise money (althogh we probably will raise some) and we don't have to walk the full 24 hours.

Our Relay for Life walk isn't until next month here. But today my place of employment is having a softball game with all proceeds going to Relay for Life. It's management vs. union employees and all in good fun. We have had several fund raisers already. It's for a good cause! Cancer is no stranger to so many of us. Good Luck with your walk!

My team is called "Laps for Lisa" and we always have so much fun. The first year I did the Relay (1 month after I was diagnosed) we had a huge banner and everyone signed it. Now we take it back year after year. We have matching t-shirts and bring tons of food and just enjoy each other. The luminaries are very moving and it's one of my favorite things. Thanks for your support.

My dd and I were "volunteers" for it this year and signed up to have a team next year. We were there for support for ourselves (we have many family members who have had, have died, or have cancer) and for our friends who were walking and for the community members we know that have been dealt family blows due to cancer.

We have friends who have a daughter the grade as my daughter (and she was in my girl scout group and the mom and I were co-leaders) and the girl was a team leader for a group of kids that ended up raising over $7300 on their own. They had purple toilets that were donated to them and they were randomly placed throughout the town in people's lawns. For a certain fee they could remain overnight, for another fee they could be secretly placed in someone else's yard, etc. It was on the idea sheet from ACS and they took and ran with it - their logo was "HELP FLUSH OUT CANCER!" It was a great thing these kids did (the girl just lost a grandmother to cancer a couple of months ago) and I was so proud to be there to help cheer them on through the night.

The luminary ceremony they do here has grown. This is held at the high school football/track field and they line one of the bleachers with the word HOPE and then line the track and another area. This year a boy scout was working on his Eagle Award and he made blocks to go in the bottom of the bags - 1600 of them - and then volunteers use glow sticks to light the bags rather than tealights. It was more of a moving ceremony this year for me since I lost my mom 10 months ago but her birthday was Friday night so I know it hit home more for me this year. IT's a great ceremony and very moving indeed - it ends with bagpipes playing Amazing Grace!
