Amazon selling book for pedophiles

The other bad thing about this is this was a self published book which means no self respecting publishing house would take it on. So why did Amazon think they should? Publicity? To prove they could? I am not liking Amazon at all right now. I may do business with them in the future (once I can ascertain this book is not on there any longer) but not this Christmas season.

No, my point is that giving attention to a kook's book that sold one copy which then propelled it into a big seller (top 100 according to a blog) is exactly the wrong way to go. If the book is illegal there are specific ways to combat that, although I don't believe the book necessarily breaks any laws. Pedophilia is a huge issue that needs to be addressed, but focusing on a bookseller isn't even a blip in the fight, and in fact served the exact opposite intention which is bringing the book to the attention of even more people.

And, I simply disagree that calling for a boycott of Amazon protects even one child from the horrible crime of pedophilia.

I respect what you're saying and agree, to an extent, that the attention this book is now getting is pretty awful.

My hope is that every single person who purchases it is investigated. Seriously doubt that will happen because our lawmakers and law keepers simply do not protect children most of the time. The system doesn't work as well as it should.

And, I will politely disagree. While it may not change a pedophiliac and there sick urges. . .it sends the message that WE are watching and we will not tolerate them. We, as a society, will be vigilant. We value our children and their safety. They may still have their sick desires, but it sends a clear message. You are a sick freak and your action will have stiff consequences. It might be enough to deter somebody from actually acting. It doesn't change who they are perhaps. . .but it it sure makes their life harder. I don't see anything wrong with that. They are the kind of sick people that if you give them an inch they will take a mile, because they are already operating so far out of societal bounds that they are able to justify anything to themselves.

In looking for reported news about Amazon's decision to pull the book, I came across this article, discussing another book condoning child molestation which Amazon did not pull.

They are still selling it here:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/A...282/sr=11-1/ref=sr_11_1/104-5652947-6503131#_

I for one will no longer be purchasing from them again.

It's sick and very disappointing.

I really loved shopping amazon but I shopped without amazon before and I'll keep shopping without them again.

Exactly! Thank you for articulating this so well.

It's just one step in a series of actions that should be taken to show that WE WILL NOT BE AMBIVALENT. We will NOT allow this to happen to our children. We will NOT allow you to sell your "how to" manuals. We will NOT make it so easy for you to share your sick information with other monsters.

I'm sorry to say I was just able to pull this up on Amazon. It has not been removed.

You are right its is still up. I was just looking in the Amazon forums and they are saying to call because CS is not going to pay attention to the comments and emails. They said that their CS lines are being bombarded with calls.
However someone said Amazon has posted something about not pulling the book because that equates to censorship. I find it disheartening that a company makes the choice to profit off of this book, this isn't about censorship, its about their bottom line. Disgusting

Amazon claims that it's not a how-to book but someone explaining why these relationships aren't bad. I guess that I'll never really know for sure because I certainly don't intend to read the book!

Do any other retailers sell it? Has anyone checked? I suspect that the written word arguing in favor of these relationships isn't actually illegal. It's distasteful as can be though.

I personally respect Amazon's refusal to be censored but I wish that they wouldn't carry it this far.

My simple logic is this. Its no coincidence that someone found about this so close to holiday season... a little fishy. HOw do we know barnes and nobles or boders are not selling these books.

We are giving these book authors more way more spotlight that they deserve. I do not think boycotting amazon is solving anything. I hate the fact that its not the law which can compell Amazon to take a product concerning an illegal act off their site but I wont stop shopping at amazon either!

I think the spotlight at this point is good. I would only hope that the glare of the FBI flashlights blind him to death. . .along with anyone that actually bought his trash. ;)

Yep! Couldn't agree more.

And I disagree that the boycott is doing nothing. Boycotting amazon is the only choice I can make at this point. I could never feel good about myself patronizing a company that chooses to profit off of this kind of thing. *I* will not be complacent and ambivalent.

I for one am GLAD that someone found out Amazon is selling this stuff so that I don't make any of my Christmas purchases with them.

And Barnes & Noble and Borders are NOT selling this product. I just checked.

I checked B&N, Borders and the Sony ebook store and none of them have it.

Its not fishy, if you look at the date its new to Amazon, from late October. The media jsut picked up on it now, a couple weeks too late if you ask me.

I'm so not actually going to go to Amazon and look up the book, but I'm wondering if it is self published. If so, I would assume any information posted on Amazon.com about the book would come from the publisher, not Amazon. I don't think Amazon is claiming anything.

I think in that old article someone posted somewhere back in this thread, that an Amazon spokesman said this but I might have misread it.

I hate this book and hate this subject matter and I hate that Amazon is being so stubborn. I don't see why they would be because I doubt that they make much off of a book like this. It's a cheap book and I can't see there being much of a market for it. Even though sales will likely skyrocket with all of this publicity. :sad2:

ITA! I also believe that the more these types of books are out there, the more we are desensitized to pedophilia as a society. Also, with the internet, more pedophiles are now communicating with others, exchanging thoughts and ideas. This only reinforces in their minds that since there are others like them, they are "normal". If we as a society just stand by and protect their free speech, our children will pay the price ultimately. I hope Amazon's CS phones will be bombarded with calls until they take the book down.

Everybody sure this isn't actually just a joke book? I mean it's in really bad taste but still, I can't imagine this being real.
